I enjoy concise, “show, don’t tell” writing. I’ve recently gotten into Edith Nesbit’s short horror stories: so far, “Hurst of Hurstcote” and “John Charrington’s Wedding” stand out for the way the narrator’s point of view provides a very limited perspective of tragic events, and you start to see things differently in some way as you pick up on small clues.
Nesbit drops these clues so casually I took the statements for granted at first, then had to go back and look at them again. There’s a really immersive effect: almost like being in the story and solving it yourself. Or hearing it from a narrator who seems normal at first but makes you gradually uneasy, with that creeping feeling there’s something you’re missing, but you’re afraid to figure out what it is.
I also like what I will call “small, personal horror.” Not cosmic, apocalyptic, etc., but something going wrong in people’s everyday lives.
Your Tiny Hand is Frozen by Robert Aickman, as well as The Guardian by Walter de la Mare gave me this feeling. (Anxiously waiting on a copy of a horror anthology that has Seaton’s Aunt, also by la Mare.)

My work laptop's IPv6 is showing up blocked quite a bit on the firewall log with default deny / state violation rule.
The destinations are mostly Google and Microsoft owned IPs, tied to their ad services.
Watching the log file, if I go to an ad-heavy website, many entries happen while the page is loading.
If I disable IPv6 on my work laptop and reload the ad heavy webpage, no blocks in the log.
I'm good with my information not making it to their ad sites.
Just wondering if there is anything I should be worried about.

2020 Toyota Tacoma 50k miles. Started hearing fluid movement behind dash last week.google search said check engine coolant which when I did was bone dry. No check engine light or abnormal temps on dash. I refilled the radiator and excess tank with coolant and it immediately started leaking out bottom of truck. Took it to Toyota which they told me was a cracked engine block near passenger mount bracket. Told me that I'm twoonths out of powertrain warranty and it will be $14,000 repair for a used engine replacement and a 1 year parts and labor warranty. My mind is spinning. Is this price expected or am I getting fucked by Toyota. Do I just buy a new truck or get replacement for this to possibly happen again?

I want to share a mistake I made after successfully quitting smoking for six months, a mistake I see mentioned here often, as many struggle with it.
Many people believe they can smoke just one cigarette and not get hooked again, that the addiction is now gone and that there is nothing wrong im having just one cigarette. Please, if you’ve quit smoking or are in the process of quitting, understand that this is not true. Don’t think you’re stronger than others or that you can smoke just one without falling back into addiction. We all thought that and we were wrong.
Nicotine addiction doesn’t work like that. The moment you take in nicotine, you restart the addiction cycle. Often, people end up smoking even more than before. I know people who stayed smoke-free for over 20 years but picked up a cigarette, thinking it wouldn’t matter, only to find themselves addicted again. They can’t forgive themselves for that mistake.
If you want to quit and stay a non-smoker, you need to understand that the only way is to never smoke another cigarette or use any product containing nicotine again. Good luck!

2025.01.20 20:50 Pave_Low Nest thermostat keeps creating an autoschedule and turning on the heat when I am not home
I purchased a home this fall that has Nest thermostats installed and I am there only on weekends. I reset the Nest to factory when I moved in, made sure all the heating schedules were deleted, turned off Home/Away Assist, turned off Eco, turned off auto-schedule and turned off early-on. I turn on the heat to 68 when I get there and turn it off when I leave. The only thing I want Nest to do is turn on the heater if the house gets below 40 degrees. That's it. Nothing more.
None of that seems to matter.
Today I noticed it was getting suspiciously colder and I checked Nest and it said the temperature was set to 60 degrees. I checked the App and sure enough, Nest had auto-created a heating schedule that took the temperature to 60 during the day and 68 at night. Every day of the week. Even when I'm not there. Only in one room though. In the other three rooms where I have the thermostats, it didn't do anything. This just started today (Monday). There was no schedule for the thermostat yesterday, but today there is.
The settings on the thermostat are:
- Home/Away Assist: Off
- Auto-Schedule: Off
- Time-to-Temp: Ready
- Early-On: Off
- True Radiant: Off
- Cool to Dry: Off
- Sunblock: On Ready
- Leaf: Ready
- Airwave: On Ready
