2025 Australian Open Quarterfinals Day 2

2025.01.21 10:40 blurryturtle 2025 Australian Open Quarterfinals Day 2

Keys vs Svitolina : Some players can elevate their level so much that it makes us predict errors, and Madison Keys is one of them. As I watch her crush winner after winner and just make the most pleasing sounds with the ball, my inner raccoon begins to grasp for the treasures. The urge to cling to and hope for peak tennis is too strong, and when Keys’ level dropped in the second, I didn’t dare hope it would return. Down early break points in the third, I thought Keys was toast, but she won a few key points and managed to get back on serve and she was the more effective player in the end. Rybakina didn’t look 100%, but she played well. Her level of hitting was really only undone in the first by the absurdly good level of offense Keys was bringing, and Madison winning the third and staying committed to big hitting without unraveling gives her a good shot in this next contest.
Svitolina has a few wins against Keys in the past, but the most recent one was 2019. In 2022, they played in Adelaide (similar conditions), and Keys won 6-2, 6-4. This should be close, and if Keys plays the same level she did last round, she wins. Svitolina is one of the best defenders and hits really solid, but Keys was able to redirect Rybakina’s power from extremely difficult angles so the match will be on Key’s racquet here. Svitolina is a much better mover than Rybakina so Keys’ patience and consistency will be tested, but she was down 4-1 in the first against Kudermetova and a large part of her comeback was Kudermetova developing a back issue. Generally I’d say Rybakina’s back and Collins’ inconsistency would take away from the quality of Key’s wins, but she’s been hitting extremely well this year and I don’t see significant signs of fatigue. This should be close, but Keys has just a few more ways to score and more matchplay this season. Keys in 3.
Navarro vs Swiatek : This is the first big meeting on hardcourt between these two, and it’s also the first instance I’d point to where Swiatek is really a heavy favorite in the matchup. Iga is more than capable of beating Navarro, but the bonus for her here is her improving her game at a moment when Navarro is in half a slump. It’s weird to tell an Australian Open quarterfinalist they’re in a slump, but Navarro has had a great number of unforced errors even in a positive result. Her and Kasatkina combined for 109 unforced errors, and it can be partially excused because of the nature of their rallies (long baseline exchanges to the extent that both looked exhausted for the last two sets), but there still appear to be some timing and depth issues for Navarro right now. Her forehand has locked in a bit more, but overall it was a gutsy but middling performance. The sheer volume of tennis they played was incredible, and the unfolding of the match was tense and dramatic, but I think Kasatkina could have won this with a bigger serve or one wing on which she could really crush the ball.
Speaking of crushing the ball, Swiatek has decided to. Eva Lys had break points to start the match, but that was the last look she got at success. Swiatek attacked constantly, and her forehand cross looks really sharp right now. Her serve isn’t the most well-renowned delivery, but she seems to have uncorked a more fluid delivery, and the added pace will get her the balls she can really thrive with. It feels like Swiatek has two paths to victory. Navarro is a tremendous athlete, but she has to be a bit fatigued after the 2 hour and 43 minute marathon her and Kasatkina played. It will be a long day running down Swiatek’s forehands, and the edge Navarro had in power against Kasatkina is neutralized here. If Swiatek is struggling, she can also look to outlast Navarro. Iga has struggled in the past with timing errors on fast courts, but Navarro is unlikely to dismiss all her unforced errors in the space of one day. Swiatek is playing better than she ever has, and Navarro is struggling to find her best form.
Sinner vs De Minaur : Jannik Sinner was looking comfortable against Holger Rune, but the score didn’t reflect it. Rune was making constant errors and not at his best, but he managed to get up 4-3 in the second. A quick break followed, and suddenly the #1 player on the tour was in big trouble. Rune has had good success to start the year moving in on returns. He’s pretty adept at guiding them back, and given his somewhat frequent fatigue issues it makes sense for him to be a bit more aggressive in return games. Rune’s lucky set win coincided with Sinner have some issues with an undisclosed illness, and he was visibly shaking on the court. The conditions have been warm in Melbourne, but it was somewhat unexpected to see Jannik in that state. He ended up using a medical timeout, and as with all medical timeouts, he regained momentum when he returned. I have no clue why they had Rune sitting in the sun if Sinner was off-court, but it wasn’t really gamesmanship. Sinner was visibly ill, and the health of players and risks associated with heat stroke are important to take seriously. Rune wound up taking his own medical timeout later, and an issue with the net provided another 20 minute break in the fourth.
Everything that could have sort of assisted Sinner happened, but only after everything unfortunate did. I know there are excellent recovery methods available, but this next match is tricky. If Sinner was dehydrated, maybe he could recover since he didn’t get to the point of cramping. If it was an issue with the heat, it could very well happen again, but a slight reprieve here is that him and De Minaur will be the night match. Alex was pretty effective against Alex Michelsen, and held off a second set onslaught that saw Alex really rally well. The most surprising thing about this match was the final shots De Minaur came up with. Time and time again he was able to rope clean winners with his forehand while fully extended, and critics were saying Michelsen should have won the set but sheesh, hitting through De Minaur is a lot of work. Hitting through ADM is tough, but that’s what Sinner has always been able to do. He’s only dropped one set to De Minaur in his lifetime, so barring a resurgence of his physical struggles, he should be able to navigate this.
De Minaur is the best I’ve seen him since his return from injury, and with the home crowd and a potentially vulnerable opponent we should see their closest match yet. The disparity in their backhands is hard to overlook though, and the majority of my hesitancy to point to Sinner in straights is because of how rough he looked against Rune. While looking rough, he won in a somewhat comfortable scoreline though. Everyone will be scrutinizing Sinner here, but I think modern medicine and a familiarity with a tough opponent will let him squeak by again. De Minaur is a wall but he’s playing the Berrettini role here and trying to punch through a top player with just one weapon. Alex doesn’t serve big enough to avoid rallies here (also Sinner is possibly the best returner on tour), so I think Jannik will eventually break him down. Sinner in 4.
Sonego vs Shelton : So far my plan has been to doubt Sonego and talk about his backhand. Why stop now? This matchup features two very similar styles, but two wildly different draws. Sonego played Wawrinka, Fonseca, Maroszan, and Tien. Shelton played Nakashima, Carreño Busta, Musetti, and Monfils. These are all great players, but Shelton has been bringing his absolute best tennis to extremely rough situations. His overall rally tolerance is a little better than Sonego’s defensively, but he doesn’t have a great willingness to stay in rallies until he has to. Against Monfils, he bailed out of many rallies early and tried to expend minimal energy, but once things got serious (down a minibreak in each tiebreak), suddenly he was Ramos-Vinolas and was willing to hit all day. Shelton’s careful tennis brings his technique out best, and his forehand whip is a thing of beauty. He hit a lot of heavy shots at Monfils, but it was the shots he uncorked with full commitment to the spin that really paid off late in sets. Shelton served well, and though Monfils hit a wall physically, Ben deserves some credit for getting things there.
Sonego can score on Ben and this will be pretty close. The match against Tien was a bit of a rough one, as Learner had some heavy taping on his hamstring and had to add even heavier taping to avoid forfeiting. He hung around admirably, but Sonego never cracked. Tien won the third and made things interesting, but this has been a week of Sonego outserving his opponents and looking physically dominant. I don’t love Sonego’s backhand, but it’s not much worse than Shelton’s. Neither one go too big with it, and this is a serving battle first. I think Shelton is a bit better in every department here, and he’s added a good bit of strength to his frame so I don’t think stamina is an issue. Their only hardcourt meeting was 2022 in Cinncinati, with Shelton winning in three, and you can expect another close one. Sonego has had some good fortune with the draw, but his serve and forehand are good for at least 13-14 games here. Shelton in 4. He has more experience and Sonego has gotten better prep this week.

2025.01.21 10:40 Suibianistic Who are some villains you have empathy for and can't dislike?

Who are some villains you have empathy for and can't dislike? From anything to aesthetics or personal preference for an actor playing that role to the character itself at its core. Who are some antagonist that you really struggle to dislike.
I’ll go first. I cannot hate Princess Wanning because she’s such a tragic character at her core. She was sent away as a hostage when she was just a kid, abandoned by her family to secure the crown prince’s future. That kind of pain and rejection shaped her into someone desperate for control and love, even if it meant doing terrible things. Yeah, she framed Xue Fangfei and clung to Shen Yurong in all the wrong ways, but when you understand where it’s all coming from, it’s hard not to feel sorry for her.
I can't also bring myself to hate Shangguan Qian from "My Journey to You." Played by Lu Yuxiao, she's introduced as a formidable assassin trained by Wufeng, known for her strategic mind and resourcefulness. Initially, she appears cold and unpredictable, driven by a survival instinct honed in a world where trust is a luxury. However, as the story unfolds, we see her gradually warm up to the Gong family, especially Gong Shangjue, whom she was initially assigned to target. Her complex motives and the subtle shifts in her demeanor suggest that beneath her ruthless exterior lies a woman shaped by her harsh upbringing, yet capable of change and even love. By the end, her actions reflect a nuanced character who isn't truly evil at her core, making it hard to completely despise her.

Day 6 - Bad Player, Fans Are Divided Sony Michel was the winner yesterday for average player, Fans divided
I'd like to clarify, obviously Tom is better than "good". For the sake of the exercise I'd like you guys to categorize "good" as it relates to individual records/pro bowl noms/all-pro noms, etc. Please consider "average" as players that have few or no personal accolades, but we're still productive, and "bad" as guys like Jonnu Smith, N'keal, etc

2025.01.21 10:40 Mango_addict22 AFE pack is so boring, its beginning to make me anxious.

ever since I started water spidering, I dread being assigned to a pack station and it’s not the work itself that’s difficult, it’s standing in one spot for hours at a time that gets to me, my back hurts and I’m too aware of how slow time is passing. I’ve tried music, podcasts, YouTube in the background and nothing seems to really help me feel less anxious.
I like waterspidering because there’s constant variety of things to do, I wish there was an accommodation that allowed me to just do that all week but from what I heard it’s policy that you just complete at least 20 hours in your direct path.
Anyway if anybody has advice, especially if you have ADHD, I’d greatly appreciate it :)

2025.01.21 10:40 Few_Acanthisitta_858 Alternative to llama.cpp?

Is there any other way to run GGUF than llama.cpp? I need some binaries that I can bundle up with an application, and llama.cpp for some reason ramdonly slows down quite a lot.
Ollama is good, but for windows it kinda runs like a standalone application.

2025.01.21 10:40 Pseudastur Do you think more political violence is going to occur? Trump pardoned 1,500 people involved in the January 2021 Capitol storming and riots.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/live/2025/jan/21/donald-trump-inauguration-presidency-executive-orders-pardons-day-two-live-blog?filterKeyEvents=false#filter-toggle-desktop
If there's a Black Lives Matter riot event during Trump's term (like there was last time), Trump guys may feel more emboldened to confront them and beat them up.
Since Musk is interested in having a big political footprint the UK and the EU too, do you think he could find a way of getting KC III to pardon the people involved in the summer 2024 riot also? He already wants KC III to dissolve parliament to get rid of Labour.

2025.01.21 10:40 Alpha3K Community-Feedback: State of the Subreddit

Hello everyone,
it's been a few months now since this change was implemented. Albeit - due to complaints that this would "kill the sub" - we went with a compromise, vastly cracking down on untagged NSFW posts (but leaving the content submitted), with users being messaged, filtered per name, or in particularly difficult cases, extensive ban times, my general feeling about the Subreddit is that it went far away from the previously rather NSFW-infested place it was a few months ago.
Still, occasionally, I see posts like these of users complaining there is a lack of moderation - which from the development over the past months I can not agree to at all, as made clear in the response comment. The Subreddit is in a far better shape than it was previously, and even though I may not have a statistic to show, I think this goes undeniable when looking through the Subreddit now if you have even a glimpse of comparison to what was going on in here a couple of months back in time.
Because of this, though, I want to get a more objective assessment from those who care enough to get in touch with me about it, both in this aspect in particular, as well as the rest of issues that may bug you. LumineMains Community Feedback Survey
