I slammed the cabinet shut so hard the mirror cracked. My hands were shaking as I ran down the hall to my daughter’s room. But when I opened the door, the crib was empty. She was gone.
Panic took over. My mind raced as I ran from room to room. Then I heard it—a sound that stopped me cold. Crying. It was coming from the living room. I bolted down the stairs and found her lying on the couch.
But something was wrong.
As I stepped closer, I realized it wasn’t her. It looked like her, but something was...off. Her movements were stiff, unnatural. The crying stopped abruptly as she turned to look at me. Her wide eyes glistened in the dim light. For a moment, we just stared at each other. Then she smiled—a slow, deliberate grin that sent chills down my spine.
I backed away, trembling, and before I could think of what to do, I blacked out.
The next morning, everything seemed normal again. My daughter was in her crib, cooing like nothing had happened. But there’s one thing I can’t shake. She’s developed a strange fascination with mirrors. She stares at them for hours, giggling and reaching out, like she’s playing with someone—or something—only she can see.

27 year old female, this started when I was 19.
Context: I have had this issue since 2016 when I lived in a dorm inside a very old building in college. Both my roommate and I got the same symptoms shortly after living in the same room. It started with us both waking up at night coughing up mucus. Then it was during the day as well. At least for me, it got so much worse when I was outdoors and worsened as the weather got colder. Just walking 15 minutes to class was hard. I had to leave early so I could stop in buildings on the way to my classes to sit down and get out of the cold for a while cause it caused chest pain to breathe in the cold air. I was coughing so much all the time, usually coughing up mucus. That year I coughed so much that I got really chart pain around my ribs I think just from contracting those muscles so much. It would also hurt to laugh cause those muscles were so sore. I would feel like bubbles or something in my chest/throat and that's how I knew I still had mucus in there to cough up. I went to my college's health clinic in early 2017, about a month after all this, and they told me it just seems like asthma but I had never had any asthma symptoms before. It lasted for a few months when my roommate and I decided it had to be the room cause neither of us had anything like this before and we got an air purifier. Idk if it's cause of that or cause Spring came around and it got much warmer shortly after but we both got a lot better. However, it has returned (for short periods of time) each winter since then, except for the winter of 2020 during peak covid isolations likely cause I wasn't going outdoors much.
I am still experiencing it this winter. Now instead of months it usually lasts about two weeks. It usually starts because I'll get a cold or sore throat or flu. But then that subsides after a few days but this thing starts with some other sickness and then sticks around for weeks. It is still worsened by cold air or by lying down. It really impacts my ability to walk outside or to exercise because it hurts so much to take a deep breath. I also get really conscious about coughing in public cause of the whole covid scare but sometimes I have to cause it's just irritating to breath when I can feel the mucus in my chest.
I was a competitive swimmer throughout my childhood and adolescence and never had any issues with breathing. I had been sick before but never anything that caused symptoms this bad or long lasting. And it still comes back after 9 years. I don't have any problems when exercising during warm weather and I exercise quite a bit (that's why this bothers me so much I feel like I'm falling behind on my routine). I gave up seeing doctors in college after that cause they didn't help much and just chalked it up to asthma despite having no personal or family history. Do you think I should see another provider? If it really is likely asthma I would just deal with it but I don't know.
