2025.01.22 05:14 NukFloorboard need some help regarding specialist trainers
I know these kinds of posts are not normally allowed, but I need industry experts to guide me, I guess, to the right specialists. And so this isn’t a wall of text, I’ll keep it as short as I can.
Basically, I had a type of cancer that makes you gain a lot of weight. I ended up at 330 pounds before the tumor was finally removed. For metabolic reasons, it’s been medically recommended that I bodybuild for 12 months.
The thing is, I’m not a layperson. I was in the military for over a decade, and I’m quite muscular; I just have a lot of fat on me from the cancer. Personal trainers aren’t sure how to help me.
In some cases, I’m lifting more than they are, my form’s perfect, and I’ve usually heard of any exercise they throw at me.
So, this obviously begs the question: "Why am I seeking a personal trainer then?" I don’t know how to exercise safely or effectively with all this fat in the way. Everything’s kind of upside down and back to front.
As I said, my form’s perfect, but the wrong muscles are being worked. Like, a chest fly is working my triceps, or a row is working my biceps. There’s something about my frame, or fat, or something else that’s just changed how my body is physically working. This can lead to pretty nasty injuries if I’m not careful.
I’ve had three personal trainers decline me after 2-3 sessions, stating I can’t be taught much, but they can write 8-week workout plans to keep me focused. They can’t help much more than that. They can’t really work out what’s going on and have admitted it’s a bit beyond their expertise.
So, where do I go from here? Do I need to talk to a sports science centre, or seek out an exercise physiologist?
Any advice would help me out. Cheers.

Hi all - I just accepted a position teaching English to the staff at an eco-lodge in the Amazon rainforest.
I was asked to give two 1.5 hour classes to staff Monday-Friday in exchange for lodging, 3 meals a day, and free tours with the guests.
I have some minimal volunteer experience teaching English, but am mostly not sure what to expect!
Has anyone had a Workaway like this? Any advice, tips, or materials you suggest I bring?
