It is not easy to represent spoken Arabic in Arabic script. In Damascus (for example) “grandfather” is zhaddo, that is: classical jadd plus the diminutive/affective suffix –o. This is what my grandson calls me. You can write it as جده but this does look like classical jadduhu “his grandfather”. If there is no homage, or to be completely neutral, I would say "John has the same name as his grandfather" It could be the case that John has the same name as his grandfather, but he was actually named after John Smith. Mr Smith rescued John's mother after her boat sank in storm. (present tense), then I'm likely to to reply in the present tense: "that's my grandfather", or "he's my grandfather" (not "that was my grandfather" or "he was my grandfather"). Likewise, if I was pointing out folks and already started in the present tense, I'd keep it this way: "this is my mom, this is my uncle who lives in Michigan, this is my grandfather." My American opinion: there's no way of knowing from that context. If I were forced to choose, I would pick grandfather, but considering that some people use Pop for father and other people use Pop for grandfather -- and considering the wide range of ages for both fathers and grandfathers these days, increased by adoption options along with natural parenthood, plus the occasionally phenomenal ... “爷爷”全称是paternal grandfather ,“外公”是maternal grandfather 。 这两个是正式的称呼。 然后另一个答案说得对:民众在非正式场合一般会带名字称呼家中的长辈,比如称呼自己的爷爷为grandpa Joe,称自己的外公为grandpa Mike,所以绝不会有搞出歧义的可能。 You might call them Mamaw and Papaw, but still refer to them as your grandmother and grandfather. Or you might refer to them as your mamaw and papaw. You might not do that if you knew the person you were speaking to was not from the South. My family is French-Canadian and I've always referred to my grandparents as mémère and pépère. I've always pronounced this like mémé and pépé, though, despite the spelling. Recently I've come across some articles indicating that the words mémère and pépère can be insulting. I've always used... My grandfather insisted on referring to my grandmother as Granny, which is what I had called my great-grandmother. Constantly being called Granny annoyed her no end, which is probably why he did it. On my father's side: I never knew my grandfather, so I never had a special name for him. In Arabic, when we give our full name, we start by our first name then the father's name then the grandfather's name then the family name. Suppose that my name is (I am giving English names to make things clearer): John Nick Joseph Smith (according to the Arab system, Smith here is my family name and John is my first name). 1. I'm not really sure if this is the right place here but it's addressing the different regions and different ways that different French people say grandmother and grandfather . So within that I wonder my great-grandmother on my mom's side always liked to be called mamou or momou I'm not really sure if I'm spelling it right but it was pronounced mom-ew.

2025.01.22 07:00 failedtheologian Fewer than 100 ratings on Goodreads
Suggest me a piece of fiction that you love that has fewer than 100 ratings on Goodreads. I don't mean it's just been released but something that genuinely didn't make an impact when it was published. Happy to be a bit flexible on the precise number of ratings but over a 1000 would definitely be too many.

2025.01.22 07:00 dumpsterdonuts Why no tiny microwave ovens?
I was searching for the smallest microwave oven and couldn't find anything much smaller than your usual countertop design. Is there some physical limitation on how small one can make a microwave? I thought there might be something just big enough to fit an instant noodle bowl for dorm/office or just as a novelty but no dice. I'm not an EE so sorry if this is a dumb question. Is there something about wavelengths that makes a tiny microwave oven unfeasible?

2025.01.22 07:00 Hour-Necessary2781 What did conservative from the 1950s wanna go back to?
Modern conservatives seem to gravitate towards 1950’s as the golden age of America but from what I can tell conservatism isn’t really a modern thing, so if that’s the case then what did conservatives in the 50’s want to go back to? P.S. I’m not asking this to stir up drama, I am just genuinely curious about what they wanted to go back to.

My instructor Is leaving the company to go independent and changing his car to a automatic. Contacted many instructors yesterday who have put me on a waiting list but won't have availability for a few months. Only available instructors are a few automatic instructors which I don't know if it's worth it as the prices of a automatic car is so much more expensive than a manual which I can't afford. Only been taking lessons 2 weeks after a long gap, such a pain.

2025.01.22 07:00 TeskZeroChromaweis Moving Resources
Howdy, all! I'm working towards moving to Vermont--been primarily thinking Burlington--to get out of the Midwest as I'm a left leaning queer woman and the Midwest doesn't really cut it. Hoping to move around late spring or summer later this year. Looking for any helpful resources for finding housing primarily. I don't make that much money, maybe around 30k annually so I'd probably be looking at house sharing or sublets. I also have a dog but he is an ESA and well trained.
I've moved cross country before, so I'm aware of the risk and difficulty in doing it. I'm from Ohio but I lived in Seattle for 5 years. I figure if I can make the cost of living work there, I can make it work almost anywhere.
Any resources that also focus on LGBT resources are also greatly appreciated, healthcare etc. Thank you all!
