2025.01.22 10:00 Aridan IT field veteran needing advice on situation
I have worked in the field for about 15 years. Completed my A+ and an internship while still in high school, then was in communications in the military for 4 years, then worked a government contract in microelectronics. Got laid off after about 9 months because one company ate another and ended up in a technician role for ~5 years. Moved on to a project management/consulting role and have been working remotely with my current org for about 3 years. I have several other certs in field ops and maintenance, as well as an AAS in helpdesk management and a BS in liberal arts that I’m in the last semester for.
At first I kind of enjoyed it because they just gave me a data analytics project that was so poorly understood that no one wanted to touch it, and I had a field day with it. I didn’t really need to answer to anyone else and just sort of got to show off my strengths within the platform I was building the analytics dashboard in (MS Power BI) as I acquired the skill. Then they started pushing me into more traditional project management roles where I was expected to lead meetings and keep track of 20+ client orgs at once, I hated it.
Long story short, that role ended due to contact negotiations and I’ve been folded back in a headquarters role in what I can only describe as a proverbial medieval rack of IT projects: I’m supposed to be managing a project that I’m also implementing a SIEM solution on (what even is a SIEM solution? I mean like I know what it is, but this is way outside my expertise), while also supporting an internal project in developing an AI assistant tool, while also supporting internal and client facing Power BIs whenever issues arise.
The biggest issue I’m having there is that the project I’m supposed to be managing has dependencies with blockers that aren’t being resolved and I can only do so much to get third party vendors to work with us while satisfying the needs of the client orgs. I literally do not understand how to implement this SIEM solution but they seem convinced that because I was able to figure out Power BI/DAX that I’ll just SIEMlessly (see what I did there?) be able to figure this out too.
Now add finishing my degree and a newborn baby in the household into the mix.
I’m fucking struggling, man. I’ve been attempting to escape this hellhole of a situation by applying elsewhere to maybe hopefully ejecto seato into a better defined position, but after thousands of applications (not even if exaggerating) I’m getting exactly zero hits in the salary range I’m currently in and it’s starting to feel very, very bleak.
I really want to manage an IT tech team because that’s where my strengths really shined in my last role - but I can’t seem to nail down a position. Too bad you can’t just be a tech and make $100k+ I guess..
What the hell is a guy supposed to do?
