2025.01.22 13:05 Prosperity_112 Tenants complain of house being cooler in freezing temps
I am a property manager, not owner but I have one tenant who lives in a remodeled smaller ranch style home that has there propane heat set to 70 and is complaining that on the week we have temps in the -8 f at night that his house is too cool at 60 degrees and won’t stay at 70. He complained a few weeks ago asking to have the furnace checked because it doesn’t shut off, I had it serviced and tuned up. They did not find anything wrong with it. This tenant signed a lease that stated utilities such as electric and heat/propane are not included.
I don’t know how to respond to this tenant as I’ve stated when there is freezing temperatures the house will take longer to get up to his desired temperature. I have stated in my own home, we use space heaters additional to our oil radiators and winterize the windows to lower heat costs. I live in an early 1900s poorly insulated home.
There are paragraph long complaints. I never text my landlord complaining about utility costs that is in my lease that I am responsible to pay. I just figure it out, even though we live paycheck to paycheck.
How would you handle responses to said tenant?

My wife was against it and decided to continue with the pregnancy. I accepted her choice and dedicated myself to being the best father I could, and I grew to love my son despite the resentment I felt about how drastically our lives had changed.
For the past few years, resentment started creeping in more and more. My wife quit her job to take care of him full-time, and I had to suspend my PhD and work overtime just to keep us financially afloat. I never had a moment to rest, and I felt like my career, my life, and my marriage were slipping away. My wife was burnt out from caregiving, and I felt like I had lost her as my partner. My days were work-home- workfor 4 years, almost no sleep, I didn't even have time to "love" my son as a father should (quality time together, taking a walk, play something, stay at home to take care of him, etc).
When my son passed, I mourned him, but I also felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders. For the first time in years, I could imagine a future where my wife and I could rebuild our lives and focus on ourselves. I thought she might feel the same way, but when I shared these feelings with her, she was horrified.
She told me I was heartless and accused me of never loving our son. Now, she says she can’t stay married to someone who feels relief after their child’s death and is talking about divorce. I’m devastated because, despite everything, I love her deeply and truly believed we could find peace together now that the constant stress of caregiving is behind us.
I know my feelings might make me seem selfish, but they are honest. I loved my son, and I did everything I could to give him the best life possible. But those years were the hardest of my life, and I didn’t know how to keep going. AITA for feeling this way and wanting to move forward with my wife and my life?
