Hey there!
Iâm currently in therapy for what is probably a weird obsession. Basically I have dealt with emetophobia almost my entire life, but as of this summer that has extended to fear of diarrhea/bowel changes and what they could mean. Am I sick? Do I have cancer? Will I have an accident? What if things worsen and I need to be hospitalized? Etc etc etc etc. I spend every day hyper aware of every sensation in my bowel and panicking before bowel movements. All this stress is obviously not good for my bowels. I also have food intolerances which can cause upset if I indulge.
My day depends on the quality of my bowel movements. Anything weird or off makes me spiral. I feel so dirty and ashamed that one of my compulsions is, um, physically checking myself to see if any stool is left after a movement and uhhh removing it. Or checking even if I am gassy. I have yet to mention this to my therapist as Iâm so ashamed about it.
Does anyone else relate? I feel so alone and uncomfortable. I wish my bowels would just be regular so I could relax.

- DUCON Maryland is two weeks long-- has anyone attended both? How was it? If you haven't, do you know people who have and how were they at the end of the two weeks?
- Is there a difference in terms of what's taught/difficulty level, pending the week? I asked them and they said there wasn't a difference, but I wanted to see what past attendees have said.
- For those that live in the area (specifically in Northern Virginia), on a scale of 1 - "Post-apocalyptic zombie invasion," how bad was the drive/commute to Gaithersburg? If you did it over, would you have preferred to get a hotel room nearby?

NONE of the records forwarded pertained in any way shape or form to the public records requested. It took 58 days and intervention from the Commonwealth's Secretary of State's office to get the city to provide the irrelevant records. An appeal has been filed with the Commonwealth.

Hi, I am back to eft after 2 years and I am unable to hear anything from 5 meter and beyond while using comtac2, has the audio been nerfed to oblivion?
I know it might not be my pc because even though I changed my ssd, I also play rainbow six siege and I have not experienced any change with that audio whatsoever.
Is there any settings I must change to get a better audio or any driver I must download to be at least competent with the game?

I had 1g IV iron one week ago as my iron was low and my haemoglobin was 60g/L and I felt dreadful, low energy, breathless lots of headaches. I now feel so much better (not perfect) but surely my haemoglobin couldnât have recovered in only one week? So does just having iron in your system give you more energy and less symptoms?

By community request this is Part II in a series detailing the mistakes I have made and lessons learned. Part I covers remote recording.
About half of my episodes are recorded on location, from five U.S. states so far, aiming for 10 states in 2025. (AllAcrossAmerica.com and wherever you get your podcasts.) Happy to answer question below or just reach out to me through my website.
Note: A typical broadcast news shoot has a team of four: producer, video, sound guy, and the on-air talent. Iâm solo, so I cover it allâincluding driving.
- Allowing your host to be a good host makes you a better guest.
- I learned this concept from a guest on my show who had a long career as a combat spy.
- So, if they offer coffee or whatever. Say yes! (And then you can set up your audio equipment in peace while they make it.)
- Follow the lead of your host. If they have a glass of wine, join them.
- Bring a gift. My usuals are homemade cookies, a bottle of wine, or flowers.
- Recording on location requires a spirit of adventure and comfort with the unknown. I go into peopleâs home or workplaces and record in sometimes unexpected spots. Itâs corny, but I hate the word âstranger.â
- I will be meeting with someone whose family has long been associated with the New York mafia. Weâll be recording from the basement of a social club in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. Do I think Iâm going to get whacked? No. But I definitely makes a good story!
- Ask your host (when you step into someoneâs home, they become the host!) to turn off fans, window air conditioners, dehumidifiers, etc.
- Everyone wants to sound good. Youâre the one making it happen. Donât be afraid to lead the way here.
- Always ask when touching/moving things. (And be sure to move things back later.)
- Close doors to reduce echo, especially in larger rooms.
- If the first room youâre shown doesnât work, suggest a different room.
- I prefer to set up on a dining room table. I tell guests ahead of time, that âall we need is a table and two chairs,â so theyâre aware in advance.
- I have a small foldable tray table that Iâve considered bringing. Right now my entire kit fits in a tote bag and I would like to keep it that way. (I donât do video on location.)
- Have your routine down: equipment and settings should be on-point. You are less likely to make mistakes if youâre following the same steps every time. The less variables the better.
- Checklists work!
- However, some change is unavoidable when stepping outside of a studio, so be prepared for unexpected situations.
- I carry only one set of headphones, which I use to monitor the audio during the sound check. Then I put them aside.
- I learned from a radio broadcaster and podcaster that most people really donât like to hear their own voice.
- And some people donât like their hair messed with either.
- Have backup accessory cords. (Itâs great to have two of everything. Cords and adaptors are often the first things to fail.)
- Avoid recording outside when possible.
- Weather conditions must be right, and it requires a level of technical knowledge and equipment that I donât have.
- Be mindful of overcompensating for unique recording situations. I once recorded a guest from an outdoors picnic table. The recording had some background hissing because of the location. I got spooked and began setting the gain too low on follow-up recordings.
- Angle microphone up at 45 degrees. I donât like it when a microphone covers someoneâs mouth straight on. I feel like Iâm looking at them from behind a mask.
- I had this happen with a rock musician who was used to an on-stage setup.
- My set up is two mics/stands, an audio interface, and a laptop.
- I can see the recording live in GarageBand as the conversation happens, so Iâve never had to worry about losing audio.
- This also helps get the sound quality right in real time.
- I have a preset GarageBand template that I use for all on location recordings.
- Turn off computer lockscreen/sleep mode. Itâs unnerving when your screen saver starts in the middle of an interview.
- Close all applications on your computer, particularly browser tabs on Chrome, Firefox, etc., as they use a lot of memory.
- Your computer fan will sound like background hissing if it runs.
- Hissing is the enemy. Do everything you can to avoid it.
- Iâm trying to make it nice, not perfect! Donât obsess over minor differences in sound reproduction. Listeners wonât notice.
- Aim for good, reliable, and portable equipment. You donât need expensive equipment.
- There is a concept called âreciprocal self-disclosure.â Donât expect people to bare their naked souls if youâre all clammed up.
- I am super available to guests. They have my email, phone number, and home address. (I contact most of my guest by handwritten letter.)
- I donât call my episodes interviews. I am not a journalist. They are visits. To me thatâs an important distinction.
- I tell guests before we begin that itâs great to ask me questions too.
- Notes should only be two single sided pages that you can lay out on the table in front of you so youâre not flipping pages on the recording, and your guest doesnât feel like theyâre being subjected to an interrogation.
- I write my notes in a notebook the night before. Then, I review them just before the podcast so I donât have to refer to them too often during the show.
- SAVE the recording as soon as you press stop.
- Get a selfie. Set next steps.
- Send a handwritten thank you note after the show. (You already have their address.)
- It is an HONOR to visit with people. To me itâs what podcasting is all about!
