Note: please don't make generic statements like "third world country bro", if you don't want to ponder the thought.
Living in India has made me ask this question a lot.
- When you rent a house, you give a hefty deposit as a failsafe.
- When govt collects taxes, people believe that they will never ever go to where they are needed.
- When you make a business transaction, the amount of checks you have to follow is ridiculous.
- People do not question their elected representatives, thinking talking to them never works.
As an engineer, I have a bad habit of seeing everything as a computation problem (a hammer sees every problem as a nail). For example, there is a concept called zero knowledge proof to ensure trust in contracts.
So my question is the same as the headline. If you were Lee Kuan Yew in 1965, who inherited a poor colony from brits, how would you make sure that the people trust you?
Another question, is there a way to ensure trustiness between two parties, like the zero knowledge proof, without any government involvement?
One story I read was about giving credits to rural women. So women of a village are grouped together and form a sort of society. Now each woman can ask for a loan from a loaning institution. If someone from the group fails to repay it, the credit score of entire society falls. This gives them the reason to enforce accountability as a group.
Is there anything you've read on this? Papers, books, anything?

Always wanted to start my career in an adult ED at a level one trauma center. i'd like to eventually spend some time working in corrections so i feel the ED would give me the experience to be successful in that realm of nursing. Currently working as a Nurse Extern in the ICU/PCU; i love working in critical care but have had my fair share of catering to needy adults who are capable of doing what they expect nurses to do. I've been heavily considering the NICU because of this but am worried about how specialized it is and not being able to utilize what i learn later in my nursing career. I admire nurses who are a "jack of all trades" and have a ton of experience everywhere and aspire to become that one day. I am graduating in May. Am i crippling myself by going into the NICU as a new graduate?

2025.01.22 18:11 CaptWrench 27M | Living at home is damaging my mental health. I NEED to move out, but in no financial state to do so.
Heya all, first time poster here. Just looking for tips, advice or anything really.
I'm 27 and live in the UK with my mum still. Its just me and her. We don't have a good relationship. Its very up and down, but one thing that's been constant is that I actively feel like a prisoner living in the same house with her. It's gotten to the point now however where I can't cope with it any longer and I NEED to move out, but I simultaneously don't know the first thing about where to start, nor am financially capable of doing so.
I work Part Time in Retail, so I earn minimum wage and only work 20 hours a week, Originally it was more but that all got cut back towards the end of Autumn and has since not recovered. I've asked to be given a full-time contract, to which they have said is not possible currently due to payroll. Annoyingly also, I do have a degree in Computer Games Development that I got back in 2019, which I have just sat on for nearly 6 years and done nothing with due to increasing mental health issues and general burnout on the subject.
I feel stuck in life, both financially and socially. But I've come to realise that a big part of why I'm still so stuck and depressed is because I still live in, (and I absolutely hate that I'm only now just fully realising this) an abusive home. I need help, advice, anything really. Maybe someone here has been in a similar situation and has the solution I've been looking for? I have no idea... I'm really just taking a shot in the dark at this point because I'm seriously desperate.

2025.01.22 18:11 inkydreams0325 Is it too soon to call it quits on Kurashev?
I’m a fairly new hockey fan, so give me the benefit of the doubt as I don’t have much knowledge on the backend of building/rebuilding a team.
But I wanna hear people’s thoughts about the possibility of Kurashev being moved by the deadline. Are we not giving him a chance to improve? I know last season was his peak (actually when I became a fan), and he has done a 180 this season. But do you think he can turn himself around? He’s still pretty young (25 y/o) and with him being scratched a lot and then juggled around with different linemates, I can’t help but think it’s not just him. I’ve heard that it’s a common thing that the hawks trade players that end up being pretty good outside of their franchise, and I feel like that would be a big loss for us as he’s been a good asset for this team previously. Is it a slump or his actual game?
And if they let him go, what teams could be interested in taking him on? Love to hear some thoughts and insight!

Our venue have asked us to pick a song for when we walk in to the sit down lunch part of our reception. Apparently the way they generally do it is to get all the guests in and seated while we’re finishing photos and then play a song for us to enter to. I’ve never seen or heard of this at a British wedding before and all I can picture is videos I’ve seen of American weddings, where the bride and groom dance in waving the bouquet in the air. Did you have or are you having this at your wedding and if so what song did you choose and did you feel self conscious?
