Through deeds done in the past,The Buddhist hymnist Mātṛceṭa wrote this verse in a letter to Emperor Kaniṣka (usually styled "the Great") of Kuṣāṇa, as part of a plea on behalf of animals. I liked this verse since it deals with something people often ask about Buddhism on Reddit. Often I've seen people wonder whether, if beings put themselves in dangerous situations through their own past karma, our participation in consummating the danger they face is actually a problem. Similarly, I've seen people defend animal slaughter by justifying it in terms of what is natural about the animal world, or saṃsāra.
such as these have become your targets -
if you slay them,
tell me, to whom will they go for refuge?
But here, Mātṛceṭa tells us that even if another has become our natural target through their past actions, a compassionate person will not have an interest in participating in the suffering and danger that afflicts such a being. Because if a being is in a position of vulnerability with respect to us, we are the ones who can bring them what they fear, but we are also the ones who can bring them security. And the latter is the virtuous preference of those with compassion.
This verse, I imagine, applies as well to human beings who are in a vulnerable position relative to us as it does to animals. Mātṛceṭa focused on animals, but the point he makes here suggests that giving security to the vulnerable is the compassionate use of power and inflicting suffering upon the vulnerable is the uncompassionate use of it, even if vulnerability is the result of past negative karma.

Hi, my name is Damian and I recently turned 17 years old, the last few years have been difficult for me, I can't connect with people the way I want, I don't feel like I fit in anywhere and I was recently diagnosed with depression. Trying to be as brief as possible, there have been several situations lately that have made me somewhat paranoid. For approximately two months I have started to dream a lot about something strange for me, dreams are becoming more realistic and honestly there are times when I can no longer tell what is real or not, my life itself feels like a dream, I mix false memories and real ones and it is difficult for me to distinguish which is which. Added to that I feel watched, I feel like someone has some control over my life, they watch me all the time and I don't know what they're looking for. Hey all,
I was just wondering if anyone else's emetophobia is specific?
For some context I (23F) have struggled with emetophobia since early childhood but found it spiralled out of control in 2020 after an unknown, months long illness that caused GI upset and one instance of v* (with other symptoms like rashes and stuff). I'm now a carer in an aged care facility while I study to be a registered nurse (an unfortunate phobia for this line of work but I refuse to let this fear control my choices and lifestyle anymore).
Over the years I've noticed that I am completely okay with animal v* (I have a cat and a dog) and have zero compulsions or obsessions in the instance one of my pets v* and am 100% fine in cleaning it up and tending to the pets afterwards. I've also noticed that if I am near a child (say less than 10-11yrs old) that is v* I don't have the same level anxiety or compulsions either. With children I so sometimes worry that it's something contagious but it doesn't impact me for as long and I find I can manage those thoughts and feelings quite well. For example, I was recently hospitalised with noro (I was okay! I did NOT v* at all despite it being kept for a week due to severe dehydration and abnormal blood test results), and there was a child in the waiting room who was v, she actually announced that she was going to v and I didn't have that initial gut wrenching, hot, stabby fear I get when I encounter v* usually, and when she did v* I didn't get anxious or stressed, I also didnt feel the need to block my ears or close my eyes.
However as soon as it is an older teenager or an adult (including older adults) it's full blown anxiety, panic, self checking and obsessing, nagging my partner to answer questions like "do you think I'll v*" or "are we sick? Did we catch something?" And the onset of the dreaded anxiety-induced-symptoms
Just curious if anyone experiences similar?
