Myself (M29) & my partner (F30) are looking to buy our first place. She's fulltime, I freelance (LTD). We work from home 50% of the time, commuting to London and luckily having a combined salary of 120k (Increasing with inflation). Planning to buy mid 2025 onwards, after April
Option 1; We found a lovely town, 4/4.5 * our salary to get a house (Would still need some work) but the mortgage payments are around 2.5k + bills + commuting = 3k monthly
Option 2; Same town with a nice 2 bed flat for 300k, mortgage and service charge totally around £1.6k with bills. We dont plan for children for another 4/5 years. We'd love to get a car, a dog and not have to live to work.
Option 1 seems to be the general consensus from what my friends have been saying. I worry we would be limiting our lives with outgoing payments Option 2 sounds lovely. We would be able to holiday, car and not stress over money as much. We could even start saving again for another deposit to upgrade later on (4/5+ years), potentially renting out the property But we wouldnt have a house and would like to eventually buy one later in life
I seem to be swaying to option 2 but I know no one who has done this before. Seems straightforward enough but I'm curious if I'm missing something here.
