I’m a 21-year-old pre-med student, and for most of my life, I’ve been the “good girl.” I got straight A’s in high school and still do in college. I’ve never really caused my parents any trouble, and I was always admired at church. Other parents would tell my mom they wished their kids would grow up to be like me. I even started volunteering in Sunday School before I was in high school. My faith was a huge part of my life—I loved studying the Bible, sharing my faith, and evangelizing to my peers.
But about two years ago, everything started to change, though I didn’t realize it at the time. It began when I took a class in college called Approaches to Religion, which explored different perspectives on religion—sociological, anthropological, psychological, philosophical, and theological. The professor wasn’t anti-religion; in fact, he admired it and would participate in religious ceremonies when he traveled. At first, learning about the deeper meanings behind religious symbols and ceremonies strengthened my faith. But eventually, it led me to question the “truth claims” of Christianity, and over time, I began to lose my belief.
Now, I think I’ve completely lost my faith, though admitting that deeply pains me. This isn’t about wanting to feel “free” or giving in to “sin,” as many Christians assume of atheists or agnostics. I’m actually clinging to the hope that God exists, and morally, I still live as if he exists. I have no desire to live a secular life. I cry out to Him—if He’s there—to reveal Himself to me, like He did for Thomas, meeting him in his doubt. But I don’t feel anything. I’ve lost the comfort and security I once had in believing that someone is watching over me or that everything happens for a reason.
I can’t sleep; my nights are consumed by anxiety and fear about the future. I feel miserable. Contrary to what I used to believe as a Christian, I want God to exist. I feel so alone in the world, knowing that even those I love won’t be with me forever. I’ve tried talking to my mom—she’s been loving and supportive—but she doesn’t understand what I’m going through or why I can’t just “choose to believe” for now, even if it would bring me peace. I’ve thought about therapy, but I don’t know if a secular therapist would truly understand or be able to help me navigate this. Has anyone else been through something like this? How did you cope with the fear and loneliness that followed your loss of faith?
