2025.01.23 15:22 Present_Aspect5016 Advice for $1M Divorce Settlement
I am getting divorced and will receive $1.4M in the settlement. I would love some advice on whether I should purchase a home with a $1M down payment, or rent and invest the money instead.
Of the $1.4M, $200k will be set aside to cover my portion of private middle and high school tuition for our child. I plan to put this into a five year CD earning 4% (if I can still find this rate). Of the remaining $200k, I’d like to keep $150k as an emergency fund, and the remaining $50k for furniture and moving expenses.
My child’s 529 is covered through other funds, we will jointly put in $18,000 every year for the next 12 years or so, as we have since birth. Tuition, room and board will be fully covered through the 529 - this assumes going to a school with annual costs of about $70k, and a 5% increase per year.
My salary is between $200-$250k a year (variable, commission based) and I invest the maximum in my 401k ($23,500), and the maximum in my company’s ESPP ($21,250). I also have the maximum going into a family HSA ($6,850 for employee contribution), and the maximum for a DCFSA ($3,800 for employee contribution).
I have the following assets: * $40k in cash * $133k in a brokerage account invested in individual stocks (not the Bogle way, I know!) * $325k in a traditional IRA invested the Bogle way * $165k in my 401k (target fund) * $48k in company stock, $32k in RSUs to be paid over the next three years * $23,400 in my HSA (this was split 50/50 in the divorce) * TOTAL: * $40k CASH * $181k STOCK (brokerage + ESPP) * $513k RETIREMENT (IRA, 401K, HSA) * DEBT = $0
I would ideally like to spend a maximum of $5k per month on mortgage, property tax, HOA, and home insurance combined. In my area (city in the northeast), this means I would need to put $1M down on an apartment, still leaving me with a $300-$400k mortgage.
Rents in my area for similar apartments are $5-6k a month, which would obviously increase more rapidly over time, versus the mortgage.
I’m 43 and plan to work through college graduation, so until about 60, which is also when I would plan to sell the apartment as I don’t intend to live in the city after retirement.
Home values have tended to go up about 7-10% each year for the past decade in my area, but I’m concerned about putting so much down up front, and wonder whether it would make more sense to rent and invest the $1M?
I know this is a lot of info - any opinions or advice would be greatly appreciated!

2025.01.23 15:22 boopy_butts HELP with grade 9 novel unit
I am so lost. Second year teaching this curriculum - last year I taught Catcher I t be Rye. It went really well, but obviously, some kids were bored and not engaged. However, many of them loved our discussions on symbolism in the text and Holden’s meditations on life and growing up. The novel unit follows my unit on Romeo and Juliet, and part of me wants to mix it up this year, but not sure if I should fix what isn’t broken? Should I pair it with a pop fiction text? Should I not do Catcher at all? My requirement from my admin is that it is a work of literature that is “deeper” than something they’d read for summer reading or for fun. Maybe I should do book clubs? Please let me know what’s worked for you. Thank you!!!

2025.01.23 15:22 Fan_of-tech 23s2, my DETAILED EXPERIENCE
Paper was moderate... 50+ questions seemed doable.
Maths 6-7 questions were from coordinate geometry, 2-3 from Algebra, and 1 each from Indefinite integration, definite integration, DE, AUC, matrix,2 from Complex and 2 from probability too, I don't remember much but overall in maths there were more questions from 11th than 12th
The level of maths paper was moderate and lenthy, but they were doable.
Physics 2 questions from ray optics, 2 from electrostatics, 2 from current electricity, ig 2-3 from modern physics too, 1-2 from gravitation, 2 from capacitance, 1 from NLM, 1 from calorimetry, 1-2 from KTG&thermo, 1 from fluid, 1 from Emi&ac too, overall in physics more questions were from 12th than 11th
The level of physics was easy to moderate and not lengthy, again very doable questions.
Chemistry 9-10 from IOC, 7-8 from OC, 8-9 from PC
Chemistry was almost balanced, still, IOC and PC had similar weightage and OC was slightly less only. Also the level was easy to moderate and doable questions!
What I did? I attempted 8 questions in total(1 from maths, 5 physics, 2 chemistry).
Now you may ask why did I say 50+ questions are doable... Well because they were doable. Had I studied properly or anyone else studied properly in 11-12 and did all the HW daily gave all the tests honestly and improved, then yes the paper wass very doable.
I felt regret knowing that I could have solved all those questions had I studied sincerely but I hadn't. Thus my decision of taking drop, utilising my used potential and next year I will aim to score 250/300. Will make sure that I study super sincerely in my drop year, do everything the teachers say and do the hw daily and form no backlogs! I am very confident about it.
Centre Experience Centre was on the outskirt of town, after going there everything was normal. Not as suspenseful or exciting or anxious. Just had to go through some checks like everyone then went to my Lab and sat at my designated seat. To my left was a girl and to my right was another girl. The one of left was a little too talkative for an exam centre but it was nice😂, she was a dropper, had 97%ile last year. She asked me if I am from allen, I said yes from allen kota and then she said she is from Allen patna. The invigilator was calling us out due to talking although she was the one who was always initiating the chat😭😭. I tried not to talk as I am a boy and the invigilator would have likely punished me but she was fearless lmao. She said she came in the same centre last year.
Hey didi if you are reading this then All the best I hope you get the college you want!
Anyways, I did maths in 45 mins then Physics in 35 mins and Chem in 18 mins. After going through all questions, I marked for review all the questions which I could have done had I studied and can do after my drop.
On the rough sheet, in the end, I just wrote this: "God, I promise to you, my parents, and myself that I will study veryyy sincerely in my drop year like I never had, will utilise my untouched potential!, will score 200-250+ next year!"
"32/300(maybe)------>250/300(Aim)"

2025.01.23 15:22 Away_Rub_9909 will it affect my cognitive abilities?
I was just wondering because I will go on them soon and a little scared that it will affect my ability to think...not that I'm thinking clearly at the moment either but just afraid it will deteriorate.

2025.01.23 15:22 Casat765 Another 56yo, 3rd Kyu-"just do it!"-post.
Got some inspiration from this forum before I started my Wado-journey, so here's my short story. Hopefully it can help someone to get from just thinking about it, to actually signing up for a dojo.
With some very limited short experience (20 yrs ago, different style) which was basically obsolete, I decided to start training Wado. Great club, great ppl, training is to the point and varying from self-defence, takedowns to katas, sparring and kumite-gatas. Typical Wado stuff, I guess.
I go three days/ week, one hour each time, and I think that's been enough so far. I, like so many others, "suffer" from light imposter syndrome, meaning that I had a "picture" in my mind about how long it would take to become a brown belt, and also what a 3rd Kyu was going to be able to do and perform in the dojo - nice high kicks, tight katas and snappy sound from my gi in every move.
Well, that's not really how it works, not for me at least. Looking at some of the youngsters in the club, that's been training for many years now, they are of course really flexible and sharp, and even though I know I'm not 25 any more, I still expected that I would perform "better", in that respect. But here I am, with a brown belt I kind of both do and don't think I "deserve", if that makes sense? It feels like it's gone a tad fast to get here (we do 3 gradings per year up to 3rd Kyu, and I skipped a few belts on the 1st grading due to "previous experience") and I thought it would make me feel more worthy of a belt if it took longer to get it.
So - what to do? Well, Sensei clearly thinks I qualified for 3rd Kyu, so that's one thing.
And I guess that's actually the ONLY thing that matters. I mean, I can think whatever I want about how kicks and stuff should be, but I'm not the one assessing me on the gradings. All I can do, and plan to do, is just to show up, do my best to hang on, and let things run the way things probably been running for decades in the club. I will never be 25 again, but I am calmer, more patient and attentive, and maybe looking at the whole karate-thingy in a different way now than when I was younger.
So, thinking about it - I like that I'm able to do this now at my age, compared to in my mid-20s or whatever, when it would have been "easier".
So, my advice is to just do it. It's a personal journey. It's about being better tomorrow than yesterday. And if you're not - rinse and repeat, and get on it again.
It's worth it.

2025.01.23 15:22 PruneMental6723 -+1 week internship (16/17 year olds)
I’m from the Netherlands and next year, I’ll have to do an internship at a international company for my school. I can do this in my own country, but I’d really like it to take this opportunity to go to a US state like NYC and do it there. So my question is: is something like a 4-5 day internship possible at some companies or will it be a hard thing to find anything? Not really looking for ‘high’ functions or something, just a nice thing to do for a few days.

2025.01.23 15:22 Wyckedd My Union is conspiring to pay my facility less money. Do I have any legal recourse to prevent this?
I work for the federal government, I'm a member of a large Union that has members in all 50 states. My pay is structured such that people who work at busy facilities make more money. People who work at slower facilities make less money. The problem is these numbers haven't been counted in a decade so no pay fluctuations are occurring. I'm at a facility that is comically busy and the union refuses to get a recount done because nationally it would result in a majority of facilities making less money and they don't want the general membership to get a pay cut even though it's at my facilities expense. I'm paying membership dues for them to literally prevent me from making more money, I feel like this should be illegal. Is there anything I can do about it? It's worth noting that another one of the amazing ideas the union came up with was to actively prevent people from leaving whatever facility they're at in search of better pay at a different facilty and there's no non-federal version of my job that I could just apply to so my options are suck it up or forfeit a pension.

2025.01.23 15:22 ansunikahani Shaved my babyhairs😭F17
so my baby hairs at first i thought they looked weird so i shaved them off but then when they grew back it was super obvious I’d shaved them. I tried waxing but that ended up being a mess it even bled a bit and looked like I had this weird red mark on my forehead like the stuff married women wear in India. So i shaved them again but now they’re growing back and i really don’t want to keep doing that. They’re kind of creeping down my forehead and it looks so weird...i just don’t know what to do with them anymore they aren't very noticeable in photos or in the dark since they're a bit brownish but in sunlight they stand out a lot more and it makes me feel uncomfortable and after shaving they grow back thicker and I’m not sure what to do with them anympre Any tips😭? submitted by ansunikahani to IndianHaircare [link] [comments] |

2025.01.23 15:22 SHADOW_SP000 The wonderfizz should appear earlier
I do get it not being in the map sincw the beginning, since it really invalidated the need for other perk machines, but it is really, really annoying to wait until round 25 to buy things like Deadshot, Vulture Aid or Elemental pop in Liberty Falls, most people usually leave around round 30 since that's when you really stop getting a bunch of XP, so you end up barely using the perk, I think we should QoL update with the Wunderfizz showing up on round 20
