2025.01.23 18:49 Droptimal_Cox Sprite Sheet Versus Mesh Renderer Texture?
So we're creating games on hardware that has not GPU so optimization is crucial and one of the debates we're having is how to handle transparent sprites. Normally you can put transparent sprites in a texture atlas and that'll help performance having them all together. However it still ends up making lots of vertices. We were told to instead make a quad, then drop the sprite on it resulting a mesh renderer with a new material using the sprite as it's texture. This results in only 4 verts with alpha. My fear is now this makes it really complicated for animating sprites or piecing together several objects from 1 sprite sheet.
I guess my question is, is this overkill? Is there an instance to do one or the other? Can I combine the techniques? I'm assuming the debate falls to vert count versus batch calls in new materials?
I'm a noob so I might be completely missing obvious aspects to this.

This is very strange since it started happening several layers down and knocked over all of the supports. I can't rule out my cats, but I don't have any reason to suspect this was caused by them since they have shown no interest in the printer since I set it up. It's been a tough day for USD bulls, starting with a continuation of 'slightly soft' US data, initial JOBLESS CLAIMS reported a little higher than expected. It was then over to a 'Trump speech', the take away being potentially lower oil prices and lower interest rates.
'Tariffs' remain in the background for now, although the spotlight remains on Canada, which also had it's own 'soft data,' today (RETAIL SALES). And I currently expect the CAD to remain under pressure.
All in all, the 'risk on' theme remains. Next up we have the BOJ, let's 'hope' for a 'dovish hike'. But we already know to expect the unexpected where there BOJ is concerned.
