Trying to find a mystery novel
I read this at least fifteen, possibly more than twenty years ago, but it may be much older.
I believe the title was some reference to the old line about "red skies at morning, sailors take warning"
I believe it took place somewhere in the carribean Islands.
I believe it took place in a fairly dystopian future.
I'm not certain of any of that.
What I am sure about is that the plot revolved on a mystery involving gangs, murder, and the practice of voodoo, in ways which are implied to be, but never confirmed to be mystical.
Similarly, the protagonist had some sort of brain damage from some sort of childhood accident (possibly involving something like carbon monoxide poisoning) which is equated with lycanthropy
She doesn't physically change, but she loses the ability to see color, gains the ability to see smells (in a synesthesia sort of way,) and eventually goes completely nonverbal in ways that seem to be tied to the moon cycle. Again, this is more implied to be mystical than confirmed.
That's about all I have, but I'd very much like to know what it was

Vengo a traer este tema a debate. Milei quiere sacar la figura del femicidio. Otra cosa es que lo haga. Pero si consigue ganar las elecciones que se vienen, todo puede ser.
Ustedes que piensan al respecto?
En lo personal tengo sentimientos encontrados. Por un lado entiendo que dentro de la violencia de género los asesinatos de hombres a mujeres son del 79%. Y son asesinatos indices más exactos que solo violencia (dónde puede haber mucha denuncia falsa). Entonces entiendo que a mayor recurrencia de un crimen, se agrava la pena de ese crimen puntual para intentar disminuirlo.
Pero que tanto disminuyo los asesinatos a mujeres desde que la figura de femicidio se creó? (En serio, alguien tiene datos?)
Solo le ha servido a los hombres para victimizarse sobre que "ahora sus vidas valen menos que la nuestra" y no mucho más.
Por supuesto que yo nivelaria para arriba, las penas por homicidio en general son bajísimas.
Mi conclusión es que no me molestaría que se saque esa figura. Aunque me siento un poco como la versión femenina de un simp por pensar así.
Que piensan ustedes sobre el tema?
Descargo: no se nada de sociología en general. Se que hay temas "complejos" relacionados con esto. Yo solo hablo desde un conociendo básico del tema

2025.01.23 23:12 tangerinesweet Mold in one of the dorms in my building - worried, what do we do? Who to contact besides 4work?
Title. Called 4work to get someone to inspect our rooms for mold (we're on a different floor), hopefully it didn't spread but I'm not feeling great about it nor do I trust UMD to do a good job handling anything as we've told them about various issues about the building/our dorms throughout the previous semester and they did not do anything about it. The building is old and has terrible ventilation, so my roommates and the other people living in our building are all extremely worried.
They're saying it was an "isolated incident" as it was only one dorm room but I'm hearing that the smell is in the halls and that it's really bad. 🤢
Is there anyone besides 4work that I should call? I don't want to seem like a Karen but I think this is serious, and the university is not treating it with the appropriate urgency. Not only is this potentially a very serious health risk, I don't want to bring all my stuff back to campus just to lose it all to MOLD.
I don't know if I'm just feeling crazy or emotional but I was also under the impression that it was on Jan 26 (Sunday) but it feels like they quietly moved it to Jan 25 (Saturday), in an email that mentioned a game affecting campus traffic? Idk, it just adds to the feeling of "this stupid fucking school cares more about money and football than the students who live there" and it's awful. Moving is already stressful enough, but we can't even go back ourselves to check for MOLD, all during the weekend before the semester starts.
God. If the people who had to be relocated are reading this I hope you guys are doing alright, and I'm sorry this happened. This sucks so bad. It already sucks living on campus, this isn't how I want to start the new semester.

I'm a beginner woodworker so i'm expecting to make plenty of mistakes. Due to this, my preferred wood of choice is pine for pricing ofcourse. The problem is the pine I'm buying at (say) Home Depot is really crappy. Is there a "better" pine I should be looking at using that will be a better quality?....I understand it may cost more, but currently i am literally buying the cheapest i see on the shelves and thats not really working out. 2025.01.23 23:12 Liz4984 Taking cold meds and passed out in the morning and smacked my face!
The bruise is starting to settle in my eye. Now my job is fighting if I am safe to go back to work (fair as I’m a driver).
I was taking a bunch of cold meds for influenza A and Covid my family has at the same time. ER did an alcohol test and decided I had been drinking and was on methadone. I don’t get opiate pain meds at all, I often wish I did, and best I can find out is diphenhydramine in large doses can test as methadone and the alcohol in it tests as… funny enough, alcohol. So now it’s in my chart that I am an alcoholic drug user, when that isn’t true.
I do drink, not denying it, and had alcohol the night before with friends (they both had covid and the flu from their kids so we did a sick girl wine and movie night) but no way that was enough to test positive 16 hours later enough to make me pass out, so it could only have been the cold meds.
