2025.01.24 00:52 OhDeeDeeOh 35K Lost to a Generator Contractor's Family
Background
In December 2024 (last month), we hired A as a general contractor to do some interior remodeling and repair work for our home. He did a great job, and we were very satisfied and trusted him. Later, we wanted to do some landscape at our yard, and A referred his elder brother B, who specializes in landscaping. Because we trusted A, we also trusted the person he referred to - especially this person was his brother.
What Happened
After we discussed project plans and pricing with B quite a few times (both in-person meetings and over phone), we decided to move forward with him. In mid-December, B was hospitalized for a few days due to high cholesterol (according to A), but we were told that he was ok and just needed to stay in the hospital for a couple more days for observation, so we didn’t overthink it. During this time, B asked us several times over the phone that he urgently needed money for medical bills and requested half of the project payment in advance, promising to start the work after Christmas. He initially said he would start the project a week after he received the payment, but since he was hospitalized unexpectedly, he delayed the project to be started after Christmas around December 30th. B said will let us know a couple of days before they get started.
December 20th, 2024 (Friday)
After several calls from B and out of hospitality or stupidity of us, we withdrew $35,000 in cash (as per B's request), placed it in a yellow envelope from the bank, and handed it to A at our house with B's consent since B was still in the hospital.
December 30th, 2024
We didn’t hear back from B until then, so we asked when B was going to start the project, and if he needs more time to rest. B said he will probably need another week, and will let us know when he’s ready. However, after January 1st, 2025, we couldn’t reach B despite several attempts.
January 6th, 2025
A informed us via text that B had suffered a severe heart attack on January 2nd and passed away last night (January 5th or early January 6th). He expressed his grief and said he needed a few days off to recuperate mentally and emotionally to be able to speak to us about the repair work he was working on at our house.
January 8th, 2025
We contacted A and asked him to help us bring back the $35,000, as the project hadn’t started, and materials hadn’t been purchased. A initially communicated with us and explained that he handed the money to B on December 22nd (Sunday), two days after receiving it, at B's home when B had just been discharged from the hospital. According to A and A's wife, both B and his wife, C, were home at the time.
P.S. D, A son and work partner, who was mainly working on our interior repair jobs, came to our house to pick up all the tools to work on their Church project. According to D, B's body was held at the Church they usually go to. Since then, A and D never came back to finish up our repair project.
January 12th, 2025
A accompanied us to B's house to speak with C about the money. C denied knowing about it but said she would look for it. We followed up daily, but C claimed she hadn’t checked yet and promised to look on Tuesday (January 14th).
January 14th, 2025
When we visited again, C and her daughter were visibly upset, stating that he didn’t give advance notice of his visit. C then went inside, and her daughter came out to tell us that C was depressed and didn’t want to talk to him. She also said they didn’t want to see us again and shut the door in his face.
The same day, A son, D, offered to help by going to B's house and talking to C again. We told D that he won’t find the money there. Since C and her daughter were trying to find anything to excuse of knowing the money. If they want to find it, they don't need to wait till this day. They didn’t even bother to look for it before. Later that evening, A texted us, saying that D and C searched the garage, the entire house, B's truck, and everywhere else they could think of, but couldn’t find the money. D also said D was trying to move to another location.
Current Situation
Since then, neither A nor C has responded to our messages or calls. Throughout the process, A insists he gave the money to B, while C claims she has never seen it and cannot find it.
We believe they have no intention of returning the money and are now seeking legal assistance to recover the $35,000. 35K Lost to a Generator Contractor's Family
