2025.01.24 03:30 v-lavender I think my booster caused my Graves' disease and now I'm afraid to get boosted again
I'm posting this here because I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience or knows of any covid aware resources on this. I've never had covid as far as I know, I've worked from home throughout this whole thing and never stopped masking when the rest of the world stopped. I don't feel comfortable bringing this up with any of my doctors because none of them are covid cautious/aware and only a few of them put on a mask specifically for me when I go in.
When vaccines were first released, I had Pfizer shots in March and April of 2021 with no significant reactions. In May of 2022 I got my Pfizer covid booster and flu shot at the same time. When that booster came out I had heard folks talk about how they had a much more difficult recovery from the new booster. Some were talking about how when they got their booster and then rested, they were sick for a week, and others were talking about doing a bit of exercise after getting their booster and getting over their symptoms within a day.
In hindsight, exercise was obviously a bad idea since we know that exercise is not good for long covid, but I didn't have this information at the time and I had work to do that week, so I decided to just take my dog on a little walk after I got home. Nothing major, but after that I was SO sick. I was vomiting, cold sweating, painful all over, and didn't do much other than sleep and visit the bathroom for 2 days. After that, I thought I had recovered and went on with my life. In October of 2022 I got another Pfizer booster and rested, didn't have any significant side effects that time but I did have scalp issues start up around that time (that is currently still diagnosed, waiting to see a dermatologist).
In 2023 I moved to a hot climate and after the move my syncope/POTS symptoms were absolutely out of control, way worse than my usual baseline or even my "flare" periods. I blamed it on the heat at the time, but I now realize that my symptoms had been slowly getting worse since around May 2022. Finally in 2024 I got health insurance and was diagnosed with Graves' and Thyroid Eye Disease.
Once I got on meds for Graves', my POTS symptoms went back to my baseline. In November my endocrinologist had me wean off my meds for a period of time, but my thyroid hormones shot back up again so I'm back on meds for now and keeping my fingers crossed I'll be able to wean off them eventually without having to kill or remove my thyroid. I'm still waiting to see an ophthalmologist who can help with my eyes.
So now, I have an autoimmune condition, take meds that further suppress my immune system to deal with it, and I'm worried about making things worse for myself if I get another booster.
TLDR: I got a covid booster in May 2022 and had horrible side effects afterwards. Now I have Graves' disease and I'm worried the booster triggered it. Has anyone here had a similar experience? Anyone have resources or info on this being a thing? Do yall think this is purely a coincidence? Please be nice, I'm far from an anti-vaxxer D:

Having had precisely zero experience with charismatic Catholics (I only found out they existed while on a road trip through Scranton in 2009), and thankfully minimal experience with charismatic Protestants, I'm trying to become a little more open-minded about the whole business.
I believe miracles happen, and the Church has constant examples of these. I believe people can get nudged or guided by the Holy Spirit when he chooses to do so. I also believe that angels and demons are real. For all of these, hysteria and superstition don't nullify the legitimate teaching of the Church.
The thing I've never been able to grasp is glossolalia. I can't accept that it's the real "gift of tongues" from the Bible: there are saints throughout history who had the real thing, such as St. Vincent Ferrer, and everything that's been studied about glossolalia points to it originating in the mind of the person doing it. Even the original practitioners, the 19th Century Pentecostals, went round and round about what it was, some of them going to India or China to babble in the street and coming home disappointed that no one understood them.
However, if we shed these supernatural pretensions and approach it for what it plainly appears to be---an emotional mystical technique---we're suddenly in much more familiar territory. Catholic spirituality has over the centuries leaned heavily into the emotions, using them to stir up feelings of love toward God that (ideally) would lead to obedience and holiness. In so many cultures, popular devotion leans this way, too: Latinos and Italians aren't afraid to gush about Our Lady, Irish songs can get positively saccharine about St. Patrick, certain high festivals in Ethiopia involve congregational ululating. Suddenly, the phenomenon of charismatic Catholics being generally more orthodox than your average pew-sitter starts to make sense.
But then, how, practically, does this fit into parish life, where not everyone is that extroverted? What do Charismatic Catholics do that's different from Charismatic Protestants (besides the sideshow/snake-oil stuff, hopefully)? From other Catholics?
