2025.01.24 00:40 stormwind_shepherd Study problems due to lack of my own space
So I'm nineteen and I just started college. So far, I only have online classes, with one in-person class starting next week. I have six siblings at home, and a single mother, who primarily works from home online. My older sister, with whom I share a room, also works online. Due to some trauma from my dad (neglect, emotional abuse, etc.) I've had bad depression in the past, and I have anxiety and social anxiety. What I'm looking for today is some advice.
Since my sister works online, she uses our bedroom most of the day, and I'm not allowed in. This is non negociable. The arrangement was fine over the summer and fall, but since I enrolled in college this spring semester, I have nowhere to do my classes/study. I chose mostly online classes because I learn best on my own versus a classroom setting, probably because I was homeschooled and always taught myself from a book or course online.
During the past two days, I resorted to doing my classes where I could, moving between my room, my mom's room, and the kitchen table. We don't have an office or a spare bedroom, and every room is always occupied. My younger siblings, mainly the seven and three-year-old, are in the living room/open kitchen/dining room area all day. They're homeschooled as well.
So, between the constant moving locations to accommodate my mom and sister's jobs, plus the ruckus and general chaos from my younger siblings, it is literally impossible to focus and study. I have no clue what to do. Any and all advice is welcome. Thank you.

2025.01.24 00:40 Zwigs_ I Spent $11,950 creating a Water Bottle...
Hi,
Over the last two + years I have developed a water bottle product. When i started, I was 22 years old and completely clueless. Now I have a finished product, I'm 25 years old and slightly less clueless.
here's all the costs, timelines, mistakes, and lessons along the way.
Phase 1: Self-Prototyping Start Date: June 13, 2022 End Date: November 30, 2022
Fresh out of college and hating my corporate sales job, I ordered my first 3D printer. Using free CAD software (Tinkercad), I mashed shapes together, and 3D printed what I thought could become a revolutionary clicking water bottle for athletes.
- Reality Check: My first prototype leaked everywhere, had no handle, and it sucked. But it was a valuable exercise in formalizing my ideas for the product.
- Cost:
- $450 3D Printer
- $100 in 3D Printer Filament
- $150 for these wildly overpriced giant compression springs (waste)
With progress slow and my skills lacking, I turned to Upwork and hired a freelancer from Pakistan. At first, things were great and each week I saw my product come to life. Then... delays when the work went from CAD Designs to A Physical Product.. Weeks turned into months. I quit my job, convinced the product was nearly ready.... it wasn't. eventually I canceled the contract, way later than I should have.
- Lessons
- ALWAYS set up timelines and expectations, even if you're not in a rush. (I did not do this so I had trouble evaluating the project.
- Beware of the Sunk Cost Fallacy
- Contract Smaller Jobs rather than one big one to better evaluate the partnership.
- Cost:
- $5,200 for freelancer fees.
While the Pakistan Design sucked, it was good enough to send to a manufacturer in China. After weeks of bickering about designs and features, the prototype arrived. It worked—but had issues but this was a MASSIVE improvement. I was very happy.
- Cost: $400.
Each iteration brought more frustration. Fix one thing; two more issues pop up. Chinese engineers eventually told me some of the issues I wanted fixed were “impossible.”
- Low Point: This was the hardest part of the process for me. I didn't seem close to finishing and I didn't have too much to show for based on all my hard work.
- Cost:
- $1,600 (4x Prototypes @$400 each)
Desperate for a solution, I hired a top-tier Upwork freelancer for $100/hour. I set clear expectations, used lump-sum milestone payments, and tested his designs myself. He missed deadlines, and his final work failed—but because of my negotiated terms, I got a majority refund on the work - AND his work gave me an idea to solve the issues myself.
- Key Takeaway: Nobody cares about your vision like you do. The freelancers and Chinese engineers are far more proficient and creative in product design, however they didn't care as much as I did to find the right solutions, and why should they!?!? it's my project and not theirs. You need to know some semblance of product design unless you have a boat load of cash.
- Cost:
- $1,000 for freelance fees,
- $50 for filament.
After successfully fixing one "impossible" issue, I began teaching myself product design real CAD software (Fusion 360), and began fixing other "impossible to fix issues". I had accidentally learned some CAD overseeing the freelancer's and Chinese engineer's work - but this was my formal education. Through brute force trial and error and youtube tutorials I was able to solve all the "impossible" issues from earlier.
- Critical Lesson: Spend way longer than you think you should diagnosing the problem with your product. I wasted so much time fixing something that wasn't broken because I misdiagnosed the cause of the issue.
- Cost:
- $200 in 3D Printer Filament.
Confident in my new design, I sent it back to China. The result? A professional, functional water bottle. But new minor issues appeared, as always. Product design is like plugging a hole in a leaking ship only to have a smaller hole/leak spring out. Just keep plugging those holes until the new hole that emerges is so small that it doesn't leak water.
- Cost: $400.
Instead of trying it fix the small issues with China, I took matters into my own hands, bought a new more advanced 3d printer, and got to work. That led to me creating samples to hand out to my friends, and random people I knew who fit the target market (was difficult considering food safety) They would come back with feedback and I'd fix any issues I deemed worthy of being fixed. Over, and over, and over again.
- Costs:
- $800 for 3d printer.
- $350 in filament.
- $200 in silicone.
- $200 for stainless steel bottles.
- $200 for springs.
- $200 for tools.
- $450 for miscellaneous.

Honest hearts has some of the most compelling and intresting characters in the entirety of the Fallout franchise. The burned man alone makes the DLC worthwhile, the story as well as all the hidden lore and tales that are spread throughout Zion are so good. But the actual map and gameplay of honest hearts is so disappointing in comparison to its writing. I just finished it again and their were multiple moments where I was just bored doing fetch quests or clearing the same cave ten times. I know thats New Vegas in a nutshell but every other DLC had something unique or compelling about the gameplay that kept me invested but Honest Hearts, honestly lacked Heart in that regard. Idk maybe because its like my hundredth playthrough but HH feels as though its half baked. Maybe something was going on with development that I dont know but its the weakest imo of the DLCs. What are yall thoughts im geniunly intrested if im in the minority here.

 | Back into the ZR2 club! I picked up this brand new 2024 yesterday for a good deal and love it. Traded in my ‘21 Silverado Trail Boss LT; which I loved but I wanted to bail before the powertrain ran out; and it was just becoming annoying to park and fit through drive throughs. Previously I had a ‘19 Colorado ZR2 V6 that I loved. My very first truck was a ‘96 S10 ZR2 that I bought in college as a winter beater some 13 years ago.(Yes I ‘98 facelifted it) This is now my 7th Chevy truck. Already did the first couple mods with a Stubby Jr antenna and Diode Dynamics XPR reverse lights since I had them from the old truck. Only complaints so far are the dealer screwing the tag frame into the wrong part of the front bumper(it was already done sadly), and there are some excessive clunks and suspension noises in the cold. I applied into an internal promotion from a non-manager to a manager role within my company. My boss has been grooming me for the role for well over a year and told me it's mine if I wanted it. I've already been doing managerial tasks and been involved in manager and up level meetings for the last few months while the posting was being punted back and forth with finance.
I got the call from HR today with the job offer. I was offered a 5% raise from my current salary + unlimited PTO, from non-unlimited PTO. Retirement package is the same trash package that exists for everyone in the company. I was kind of taken back since I was expecting a 10-20% raise based on my experience and performance in the last year (we don't have merit based raises/bonuses). I asked HR if the offer was negotiable and they said "No it's not". I explained what I was expecting and why and HR essentially said it's fair for the market and blah blah (it's not). She said she can try to get me more but she doubts it. I asked for time to thinking about it- she wanted less than 24 hours. I then asked if she was actually going to try to get me more money and she said no.
I'm now in an awkward position since I've been waiting for this promotion and have been sort of in the role already, but the money is not worth the impending stress and strings attached to management. I have a great relationship with my director and I want to be honest with him but 1) I'm not sure if he has any influence on compensation and 2) I don't know if speaking to him will backfire. I think he needs me in that role more than I need the role and we both know I'll start looking for other jobs if I turn this down so I calculate I have the upper hand.
Anyone have advice or insight?
