It's possible to use all three articles options (indefinite, definite and zero article) with generic meaning but there are some differences. Next, try using “the” yourself! My brothers and I had not yet been living with Gram and Gramp for very long. About a year, maybe. I would have been 9, Z a couple of years younger, and X in his first year of grade school. He’d started at a slightly younger age than usual, as I recall, at the beginning of the year, due to not having yet reached his birthday a couple of months later.
We had a long walk up the creek each day, from where we met the school bus. The rare offer of a ride from the few people who had occasion to be going our way was always welcome.
And we thought we had one on one particular day, when a passing pickup slowed and stopped:
“You boys are (Mother’s) young’uns, ain’t you? Stayin’ with yer granddaddy, I hear.”
“Yessir.”
“How Is yer momma? Her an’ me went to school together back when. I’m Rafe Jackson. She’ll remember me.”
“She’s fine, Sir.”
“Glad to hear it………But your daddy ain’t much. (Name name) ain’t no good - never was.”
And the cruel, mocking smile he then gave us spoke in unspoken words even young boys could understand: “And being his boys, chances are neither are any of you.”
“You’re a sonofabitch!!” from young X, having himself understood, and erupting in anger.
The man then just laughed. Said “Say hi to yer momma for me.” Put his truck in gear and drove on.
X was crying quietly now, tears he kept wiping from his eyes with his arm. Z with his arm around his shoulders giving what small comfort he could as we continued on.
And I got it. He still loved and missed our absent father, even though X had tried to stab that person once in defense of our Mother. A heavy thing for a 4-yr-old to try to do. The beating had been worse that time, and had shown no signs of stopping that time.
I still missed him myself, even as bad as things had eventually gotten.
We ourselves would come to agree with Rafe as we got a little older. Love would turn to anger. Anger to hate. Then complete indifference as we got older still.
But you can’t stop caring about someone at the drop of a dime. Especially when young.
Gramp asked what was wrong, when we got to the house. X’s reddened eyes and troubled countenance were a dead giveaway.
And so we told him. His face grew still and expressionless then, as I’d seen it do only a few times before. Eyes usually full of gentle amusement at and affection for us growing still and cold.
Rafe passed by our place again a few days later. Gramp had heard the truck approaching, seen whose it was, and gone to wait for him at our gate. I tagged along.
The truck eased to a stop, a few minutes’ conversation a welcome thing: “Hey there, Uncle Rolly!”
“Uncle” an honorific and term of familiarity and affrction used by those who felt comfortable doing so. Called by his first name only by contemporaries. To everyone else he was “Mr. ********.”
Greeting not answered in kind. Instead: “I hear you had some things to say to my grandsons.” Quiet. He hardly ever raised his voice.
“It don’t take much of a man to make young boys feel bad that way. They can’t help who their daddy is.”
“Now, Uncle Rolly, that little’un called me a sonofabitch.”
“I know it. He told me. Normally, I’d take a switch to ‘im. For the language and disrespect….But I reckon this time I won’t………..and Rafe, this ever happens again, you’ll be one Sorry sonofabitch.”
Still hadn’t raised his voice. A couple of beats to let that sink in, and no reply now coming back. Then, more quietly still, and all the more ominous for it; “………Do you doubt my word?”
No one did. As Gramp himself taught us: it’s not to be given lightly. For once given, it’s yours to keep.
“No, Sir” the humble reply, “I do not.”
I marveled at that at the time. That a much younger man seemed suddenly afraid. And I thought: “Who did you used to be?”
To me he was just the doting grandfather I’d known for all of my short life. The one I could make laugh from the time I was small. A senior Deacon in his church who no longer smoked, drank, gambled, or a few other things. A quiet man of few words who generally preferred to mostly listen rather than speak.
Held in great affection by many. Widely respected. But already I was beginning to recognize that there were others who seemed ill at ease in his presence, and were carefully respectful.
I was beginning to realize that the man I knew wasn’t who he’d always been. He’d once been someone else entirely. And maybe some considered him still to be.
I’d learn more as time went by and years passed. And some of it……good lord.
More that I never would. Things the Family refused to talk about. Questions that it was made clear to me had not been mine to ask in the first place.
“Protect and care for those who depend on you. No matter what it takes.” Another of the lessons or instructions he passed on to us.
“Well, then….” from Gramp, and he’d turned and walked away. Rafe was dismissed, and free to go.
Rafe was exceedingly friendly toward us thereafter, and would always offer us a ride when he saw us. And we always replied that we’d rather walk.

Weird question I know, but I am just wondering if anyone has had any issues with this just being loud in general? I picked up a costco IBUYPOWER last night and it was a jet engine no matter what I did. I returned it this morning and am still on the market for a pc.

I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of the products, which significantly exceeds my expectations. However, there is a notable concern regarding their shipping process; it appeared to take an inordinate amount of time for them to transfer the order to their third-party logistics provider. Subsequently, it took several additional days before USPS received the package. The order was shipped via Ground Advantage from California to California, and I was charged $36. Upon using Pirate Ship immediately upon receipt, the shipping fee was only $8.
In summary: excellent quality cards, but questionable shipping practices.

To be fair its not JUST weebs. But as I was playing today, I was griping about how there are NO whole spears in the default game. Not even rare ones. We can get a katana, but not a spear!?
Then I remembered the days of my youth, trawling the mall. And I remember the "knife store" that was really just a place for selling swords. It was the late 90's and like 60-70% of the swords were katana. Of the European style swords, about half were entirely unsound movie replicas that even the most desperate nerd would realize wasn't useable. The other half was like all the rest of the European style weapons which in general looked pretty solid. But you know what I NEVER saw in that store? A friggin spear! Not a halberd, naginata, short spear, billhook, NOT.A.THING!!! And if this place didn't have it, then nobody would. So I've realized that weebs have ruined the apocalypse for us. We just didnt have the supply of sturdy "battle ready" (with a generous grain of salt on that term) spears that would justify their inclusion in B42. Thanks 90's weebs! Now I have to use duct tape and kitchen knives for like two kills and then go install a mod to make spears good! (Its me, I'm 90's weebs. I totally bought into the "steel folded a hundred times" stuff and was probably insufferable. I apologize for the harm my people have caused the HEMA and video game community) But whats your favorite spear mod? Not just B42 either. I dont plan to go back to 41, but a sufficiently cool spear mod might do it for me.

Anyone else feel like they can’t feel the difference between plutonic and romantic love? I’ve been doing a lot of thinking this past week and I realized that the emotion I feel when I think of my closet plutonic relationship and romantic relationships feels pretty identical to me. The only difference I could think of was how intense the feelings for my romantic partners can get, but at the same time I realized that I feel the same way for a lot of my friends. And I’m now thinking the intensity is more of an anxiety about being left alone. My friendship have always been the most important relationships to me and I think that how I’ve been subconsciously thinking about a romantic relationship is an indefinite friendship, until other specified, with permission to be more affectionate than with most friends. But that could just be a plutonic relationship, there’s no rules to this shit. What are your thoughts Reddit users? Have any of y’all had similar thoughts?

2025.01.24 02:33 BarnOwl_Feather I 26f have been having collapsing spells and dizziness when standing.

Since 2020 I have been having episodes where I collapse and lose control of my body. I have been tested for seizures, nothing has shown up and now my doctor is testing for heart related conditions, I had a tilt table test during which I had another episode. I am confused about the results of the test. I have a resting heart rate of about 72 and my blood pressure is around 129/81. During the test my heart rate was 90-111 while upright and my BP ranged from 106/58 and 126/81 while upright. I believe my heart ecg was fine. I had an episode while upright and the nurse documented it, my doctor says my vitals are not abnormal and doesn't seem concerned but I am concerned as the episodes have gotten more frequent.
