Yeah. I get it. 77 million out of 341 million people voted for dumpster fire, and the apathy of many others may as well have been a vote for dumpster fire. Many of us in the US do deserve a face slap.
But the constant barrage of "All Americans are so stupid." "They're SO UNfree." "Americans are so uneducated and hateful they'll never change" "Oh, I bet Americans would fall for this dumb post"
Meanwhile, the many more millions who don't actually like Trump and who support progressive values are having conversations about the horrible state of things, trying to problem solve and spread the word about what to expect or what to do about the rise of fascism in the coming years. They're on Reddit calling shit out, including in the comment threads of those articles you think they'll just swallow without thinking. Many Americans are doing the work to learn how they made a mistake this election and are trying to be better. We have the freedom to do that and to fight for change through community meetings, information campaigns, protests, unionizing, petitions, and of course representing or voting in local elections.
I get that it's trendy to bash on the United States ever since Trump got elected the first time and disillusioned the world about the potential of the US as a global innovator or example of a functioning democracy. Our country earned that criticism, for the most part, by not having the integrity to stand up to corruption in our government. But I think we have move beyond the point where we call out "bad country, look what you did!" and we have now reached the point where we pick up the paper towels and pet stain remover and start getting to work on cleaning shit up.
The reason I say all this is because, as someone who's been screaming from the rooftops about how bad Trump is since 2015... it's disheartening and discouraging to be grouped in with (and treated like) the american idiots, who really are a(n unbearably loud) minority in our country. Kinda makes a person just want to give up on trying because what's the point if you're going to be treated like the problem anyway?

2025.01.24 20:30 SoLorenScribbles Why are there so few rules about how to make a Vow that can kill you??
I am writing a fic and the magic surrounding Unbreakable Vow plays a large part. Since there are, you know, almost no rules to be found in canon about the most binding magical vow in Wizarding World, I was hoping there were a couple of canon nerds in here who might want to hash out some canon-compliant lore with me 😅 I made a list of some of the main things that are on my mind, but if this is interesting to anyone else, there are all kinds of things bouncing around in my noggin.
1) The Vow Narcissa asks Snape to make consists of three separate promises, do you think this is how every Vow is formatted? If so, do you think the three promises all have to be related to each other? Are they the Vow, or are they how you ensure you will uphold the Vow?
2) What if a Vow contradicts itself? If someone was asked to make a Vow to prove they were loyal to the Order and one line of the Vow said: I will be loyal to the Order of the Pheonix from this day forward and the next said: I will do whatever it takes to defeat Voldemort- what happens if in order to defeat Voldemort, they had to betray the Order?
3) In the HP universe, intention plays a huge role in casting spells, particularly the most powerful ones. What do you think carries more weight when making an Unbreakable Vow: wording or intention?
4) Who determines whether or not a Vow is being fulfilled? In Snape's Vow to Narcissa, one line reads: Will you to the best of your ability protect Draco from harm? Does Narcissa need to believe this? Does Snape? Since magic is responsible for upholding the Vow, does that mean that magic is deciding what is or is not enough from the person who made it?

I have been made redundant at my last job in September 2024 and I have not received a curtailment letter yet, i have received a job offer now but not sure if the curtailment has been served or not, has anybody in this timeline received their curtailment letter? I am so tensed, my visa status still shows my old visa end date but my immigration advisor is saying there is still a chance that the visa was curtailed and a notification not sent out.

2025.01.24 20:30 totally-trolly should i be striving for more?
i recently got accepted into college, 2, and for all the courses i wanted to pick. i accepted an offer to Niagara college for Photonics engineering over everything else, it's a specialist off shoot in electrical engineering. I cant help but wonder if i was limiting myself to where i could go, could i make it to university? am i even picking the right college?? is it to late to re apply? would courses be filled already??
when im looking at Niagara college (Welland) i just see a small basic school, i could've gone to fanshawe but i feel like either way id see them both as small game compared to universities.
my average is at a 70 after this semester it'll be around 78-80, then i have 1 more semester and then that's it. My goal is to go to this Niagara course, complete it and then transfer credits to a university but at that point i feel as though my prime university years would be gone.
my mind is still everywhere, its weird having to pick where i go and have that school define me career wise.
if its not to late, how do i even go about applying to universities? or is it to late, should i just stick to my plan and hope?
