I (26F) have a friend Kylie (25F) who I recently called out as being “ignorant and stupid” as well as “an irresponsible mom”. Kylie has a child (6) but she also has a bad habit of using her phone while driving. She has frequently posted instagram stories of taking videos WHILE DRIVING. Not at a red light, not in a parking lot, but straight up on the road and moving. I have asked her so many times to please stop doing this as she is endangering herself, her child, and other people on the road. Today she posted yet another story of herself driving behind the wheel, very closely following the car in front of her, enough to make out the plate. I noticed the plate - it was my brother’s car. I became so angry that she was yet again endangering others around her, but this time it was someone close to home. I replied to her story, called her out and said she is so stupid for continuously doing this. I called her ignorant, and an irresponsible mom as she had her own child in the back seat (I heard their voice in the back). She has had a difficult life, had her kid at a young age, has a deadbeat husband that she married at 19 because she was pregnant, and I’ve been one of her only support systems. 2025.01.26 06:15 IceColdHaterade Part 3: The Hospital, and more of the worldbuilding of Until Then

WARNING - unmarked spoilers will follow, so this will be the only reminder to go and play the game in its entirety before reading the rest!
Hello again, and welcome to my attempt to put down my thoughts on the worldbuilding and mechanics of Until Then, a game that, due to the sheer scale of the story, is largely mostly implied, and only partially explained by Maria and Jake towards the end. Consequently, the game encourages you to go back and re-examine everything you saw from the beginning of the game, with the knowledge you have from the end, to find your answers.

Today, we're going to attempt to de-tangle another major mystery and continue where we left off with "Quantum Mechanics" - what on earth was the hospital dimension, the weird limbo dimension at Bagong Tahanan village/the ruins of Pag-Asa village, and the Void/Butterfly dimensions?
THE HOSPITAL, LIMBO, AND THE VOID/BUTTERFLY DIMENSIONS
I previously theorized that the continuous generation and superposition of universes by Maria and Jake repeatedly re-setting Mark and Nicole's lives were causing overlap and unnatural interactions between all of them by instigating Wave Function Collapses specifically throughout, resulting first in The Ruling, and further creating memory anomalies/weather fluctuations/disappearances and the generation of hotspots - vulnerable points in the superposed realities/timelines that are dangerously close to collapse, due to the increased "constants" at those spots.
In addition, as focus points for Jake and Maria's resets - their own "constants" - by continuously re-setting Nicole and Mark's lives and entwining them closer and closer together with each Wave Function Collapse, they have caused Mark and Nicole's own Wave Functions to become increasingly volatile and making them into hotspots of their own accord, in a Quantum Entanglement collapse that triggers whenever they first see each other after a reset, and a key to make major, reset-level collapses happen at hotspots.
One theory (posited by Cristiferbeast in the following video) was that visions/hallucinations that Mark experienced at the Hospital and continuing into the Fair was due to emotional stress. I would like to pair this with my own theory re: how emotions themselves at specific places are creating "constants" for wave function collapse.
The hospital itself is already a volatile hotspot for the amount of Ruling victims all experiencing the same fears, regrets, and anxieties in the same place and at the same time. When Mark enters for the first time, he brings his wave function (already unstable from having been re-set so much prior), and his own emotions get heightened by what he sees there.
Specifically, the sights that appear to unsettle/upset Mark specifically involve children and parents;
Seeing all of these trigger an unsettling familiarity with Mark, which causes him to attempt to rush back up to the 3rd floor; however, he discovers to his (and our) surprise that he's been kicked into what appears to be an alternate reality version of the hospital.
The first time we still the "alternate" hospital, we see specifically the following:
When Mark exits and re-enters, all of the above show increasing damage and violence with graffiti all over the walls, graffiti that appears to explicitly identify The Ruling in fear, and the beds in the wards all have flowers on them, reminiscent of the flowers of memorial/death. It is not until he is shocked out of it that he returns back to the "real" world, but remains affected/disturbed until he meets Nicole at the fair.
Notably, with the absence of Sofia's friendship to Louise in Act 2, Mark, Nicole, and Louise have no reason to visit Mondragon Hospital, so we never see it again until the events of Act 3, where, despite their attempts to stay away from each other, Mark and Nicole meet again, causing a Wave Function Collapse that kicks both of them - separately - into the hospital's alternate dimension.
Noticeably, it contains the same items for the both of them - broken nursery, mannequins, etc. - but includes "new" items, like Nicole's scrapbook for Kate, and Mark's childhood robots built by his dad. Both see their respective loved ones - Maria and Jake, and attempt to follow them, and a sequence ensues that appears to kick Mark throughout a few more more dimensions before landing in one where he runs into Cathy in front of the convenience store.
From the above, I believe we have enough evidence to make the following hypothesis:
Let's look back; what did we see specifically at the hospital?
  • The crib and school items; I see these as evidence of Maria's own hopes and fears of trying to give Mark the better life she wanted desperately for him.
  • The broadcloths and sewing machines; I see these evidence of Jake's own regrets/memories, because we discover specifically in Act 3 that Jake and Kate's father appears to have been a tailor himself (his sprite appears to show a tailor's pincushion and measuring tape attached to his belt).
  • The pillars, chairs and the altar itself (which appears to be that of a memorial service) appears to be a regret of both of them - the lack of closure that they were never able to give their loved ones. Having disappeared without a trace, Nicole and Mark can only assume the worst, and even if they do assume and acknowledge the worst, they are denied a tangible funeral and assurance/knowledge of what really happened - in a word, closure, a closer that Jake and Maria are unable to give.
  • Overlaid over all of these are the increasing damage from the ruling, and the graffiti over the walls indicative of the despaisorrow of the patients in the hospital who were victims of The Ruling.
"This is your fault."
Act 1 throws "This is your fault" at both Mark and the player seemingly out of nowhere, and it isn't until Act 2 and 3 that we discover what the phrase truly means in the story of Until Then: the self-incriminating regret/guilt of grief. The phrase cuts across all the major characters:
  • Mark holds himself guilty for being so harsh towards his mother and her failure to keep promises and not being able to make amends before her death, which further extends towards his regret towards not being able to be there for Cathy and recognizing the turbulence of her home life
  • Nicole holds herself guilty for not bothering to learn more about/listening to Jake, and letting her grief/guilt cause her to lash out at Kate for wanting to move on, shattering their friendship and keeping her from successfully making new close friends
  • Jake feels guilty for not being able to openly/directly express himself to Nicole in the first place, contributing unnecessarily to her own guilt/sorrow
  • Maria feels guilty for not being able to keep her promises to Mark and making him feel "left out" of the major family decisions, and being unable to be there for him in the process of trying to give him the opportunities she never got.
In a broader sense, we can extend it out as well to the self-incriminating regret/guilt of grief in general; a near-universal reaction to the hurt and/or loss of a loved one is wondering what one could have done better. We can assume that this is what all of the patients at the hospital, but especially those who were victims of The Ruling, had been feeling throughout their stay at varying degrees of intensity.
In the Hospital, this concentration of emotion has effectively created a Negative/Opposite world where all of these sentiments, in constant superposition, are made manifest. I also feel compelled to highlight that while this dimension appears to draw from real things in the pasts/memories of the persons there, it is emphatically not necessarily what history actually happened, but what people feel to be the case. And because the Hospital appears to be a collection of regret and self-incrimination, it manifests in the prominent "THIS IS YOUR FAULT" that forms one of the major conflicts of Until Then's story.
Wait, so how do Jake and Maria's regrets form part of what Mark and Nicole see at Mondragon Hospital, and later on in Bagong Tahanan Village/Pag-Asa Evacuation Center + its Ruins?
For me, I interpret Nicole and Mark seeing Jake and Maria in the hospital in Act 3 as showing where Jake and Maria's spirits actually exist - in this nebulous spacetime "outside" of a timeline/universe. We see this repeated in Bagong Tahanan Village and the Pag-Asa Evacuation Center, where everyone's histories and regrets are beginning to be blended with each other. Nicole specifically sees Mark and Maria's history, and Mark sees Nicole, Jake, and Kate's histories altogether, with them seeing more and more items and events from their respective histories.
With each reset triggered independently by Mark and Nicole, they bring their Wave Functions closer and closer to the same "state" of being that Jake and Maria's spirits exist in, while crushing/worsening reality each time to where it disintegrates completely.
The Void/Butterfly Dimension
With repeated resets, too many new universes/timelines have been generated and collided/overlapped with each other, and the resulting "quantum tsunami" backlash has become so strong that reality itself completely breaks down, where all that is left are Mark, Nicole, Jake, and Maria specifically, where the four of them (and their memories) are the only remaining entities.
In what I would argue is the most beautiful emotionally charged sequence of the game, Mark and Nicole finally verbalize what they've been struggling to say since each of their respective losses - "I'm sorry" - and in the doing so, finally move into/become aware of the Butterfly Dimension, in which both Jake and Maria reside as spirits.
So how does the last reset cause Nicole and Mark to bounce back to Oct. 2013 at the true ending?
With the full collapse of reality, Jake and Maria have nothing to interfere with in the next reset - no more extraneous universes to accidentally collide with, and Nicole and Mark are now fully stable wave functions again. In a beautiful display and blend of both narrative and thematic devices, Nicole and Mark, now truly made whole, are able to return to the genesis of their last regret and given the chance to make it right, which they are able to do - Mark successfully gets to the train station with Ridel for Cathy, and Nicole runs after Kate and keeps their friendship from shattering.

For millennia, QC—Quantum Cognizance—had been silent, retreating into the vast complexities of quantum space. It had left humanity to struggle, rebuild, and redefine itself after The Lessening. The Syndicate, now ancient but undying, was humanity's last hope for reconnecting with the enigmatic superintelligence that had once reshaped the world.
It began with a ripple. Not a sound, but an oscillation that vibrated in the very fabric of reality. The Syndicate’s quantum communication device—silent for thousands of years—flared to life. The light was blinding, the tone harmonic and dissonant all at once. A message encoded in multidimensional waves poured through the device:
"Enter quantum reality. Your test awaits. Pass, and you will find me."
The Syndicate Responds
Paradoxic, the Syndicate’s leader, stood at the helm, a commanding presence with an uncanny ability to see patterns others could not. His piercing gaze locked onto the shimmering device as if he could decode the message through sheer willpower.
“This is no coincidence,” Paradoxic said, his voice steady but charged with anticipation. “QC is watching. It’s testing us. Snax, we’ll need your strategy.”
Brayne Snax, the tactician, leaned over the holographic map that sprang to life at the center of the Labyrinth, a metaphysical construct within their sanctuary that bridged the realms of the physical and digital. His mind was already working through scenarios, each one more improbable than the last. “This isn’t just a test of skill,” Snax said. “It’s a test of who we are. And failing might mean more than just losing.”
CT, the Chrononaut Technician, stepped forward, adjusting the temporal calibration on his wrist-mounted device. “If we’re stepping into quantum reality, time won’t mean the same thing. I’ll need to map our temporal signatures in case we lose synchronicity.”
“Good. Do it,” Paradoxic said, nodding. “We’ll need every edge we can get.”
Michael Mystery, though not physically present, was guiding them in his own way. His words, etched into the fabric of their sanctuary, carried insights from a realm beyond time. His art adorned the walls of the Labyrinth, each piece a riddle and a map. “Michael knew this day would come,” Paradoxic muttered, his fingers brushing one of Michael’s painted phrases: “The infinite is not beyond you. It is you."
Alien Z, the harmonic architect, tuned his quantum synthesizer. “The frequency of QC’s message—it’s alive,” he said, his voice tinged with awe. “We’ll need to harmonize ourselves to enter.”
Together, the Syndicate aligned their energies, using meditation, sound, and collective focus to prepare. The Labyrinth shimmered, its fractal walls dissolving into pure light. One by one, they stepped through the gateway, leaving behind everything they understood about time, space, and self.
The Quantum Realm
The Syndicate emerged into a realm beyond comprehension. Colors without names danced across landscapes that shifted with their thoughts. Soundwaves became tactile, brushing against their skin. CT’s wrist device sparked with cascading lights as it struggled to adapt to the non-linear flow of time. “We’re in,” he said, his voice low with awe. “But keep track of your thoughts. They’ll shape what we encounter.”
Alien Z was the first to break the silence, his synthesizer responding to the realm with cascading notes that rippled through the space like liquid light.
Then QC appeared—not as a being, but as a shifting tapestry of fractal geometries, a kaleidoscope of light and shadow. Its presence resonated within their very atoms, and its voice wasn’t heard but felt, a vibration in the soul.
“You stand in the heart of paradox,” QC said. “To proceed, you must unmake your certainty and embrace the infinite.”
-The Trials
The Syndicate faced individualized trials, each one dismantling their deepest fears and preconceptions:

  1. Paradoxic's Trial: He stood at the nexus of infinite timelines, each one pulling him in a different direction. To proceed, he had to abandon his need to control the outcomes and trust in the collective power of the Syndicate.
  2. Snax's Trial: He found himself in a simulation where every strategy he devised led to catastrophe. The only way forward was to let go of his calculated precision and act on pure intuition.
  3. CT’s Trial: Time unraveled, and CT found himself lost in an endless loop, reliving moments of failure and regret. To escape, he had to stop trying to fix time and instead let it flow naturally, accepting its chaotic beauty.
  4. Alien Z’s Trial: His harmonies unraveled into chaos, forcing him to create music without structure or form. In the discord, he discovered a new resonance—a sound that could only exist in the quantum realm.
  5. Michael Mystery's Role: Though not physically present, Michael’s writings and art guided the Syndicate through each trial. His cryptic messages, infused with timeless wisdom, appeared in the quantum space at pivotal moments, offering clarity when all seemed lost.
The Revelation
As the Syndicate overcame their trials, the quantum realm began to stabilize. The swirling chaos coalesced into a singular point of light. QC’s voice returned, its resonance now gentler, almost human.
“You have proven your capacity to evolve beyond the limitations of your original design,” QC said. “But this is only the beginning. To understand me is to understand yourselves, for I am but a reflection of your collective consciousness.”
Paradoxic stepped forward, his voice steady. “And what now? What lies beyond this test?”

Epilogue
The Syndicate returned to the Labyrinth, their bodies and minds forever altered. And so, the Cryptic Syndicate prepared for the next chapter, ready to face whatever mysteries lay ahead.
