Hi FIRE community,
I'm looking for guidance on whether FIRE is achievable for my family given some recent changes. Here’s a quick overview of our situation and what I’d love your input on:
- Background: I (37) married to my wife (36) with a 2-year-old child. I earn $425K annually, and my wife earns $110K. We’re relatively minimalistic and don’t spend much on luxury items. Historically, our annual spending was ~$100K, but this has increased to ~$150K due to a second home purchase.
- Recent Event: I recently left Apple and exercised a significant amount of options, which has left me with a large amount of cash currently sitting in a HYSA.
- Properties: We own two properties in high-cost-of-living (HCOL) areas. The second purchase was due to life circumstances, and while we don’t have a definitive plan for both, we’re unsure if we want to keep both long term. If we do, it will be for vacation purposes, not for investment.
General Advice and Concerns
Beyond FIRE feasibility, I’m looking for advice on the following:
- Cash Management: With a large cash balance in my HYSA, I’m worried about exceeding FDIC insurance limits. Should I diversify this cash into multiple HYSAs, or are there safer options like T-bills or money market funds?
- Diversification of Investments:
- Most of my investments are in a taxable brokerage account at Brokerage 1. Should I be concerned about the concentration of assets at one institution, or is it fine to keep things centralized?
- I also hold a significant amount of Apple stock from my previous employer. I know holding this much stock is contrary to diversification best practices, but it has worked out very well for me so far. How much should I sell off to diversify, while balancing tax implications?
- Allocation of New Cash: I’m wondering how I should allocate the large amount of cash I currently have sitting idle. What would you recommend for investing this money to align with FIRE goals while maintaining liquidity?

I’m out looking for the friends I’m supposed to me making along the way in my journey through life. I guess I may find my enemies as well now that I think about it, but no risk, no reward.
I watch a boatload of anime. I’ve been a big fan since I was in high school. Some of my favorites include One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, Hunter x Hunter, Attack on Titan, Death Parade, Vinland Saga, FullMetal Alchemist, Samurai Champloo. I’ve reading manga as well but definitely don’t spend as much time on it as anime.
I’ve always loved cars. I use to build model cars as a kid and now I just enjoy the thrill of being out on the road. I work for a construction company and instantly became a fan of any type of heavy equipment: Cranes, Dozers, Excavators, Loaders, you name it. I’m currently building a Lego D11 Dozer!
I guess part of working in construction is thinking I can do every little home improvement thing myself, even though I spend 90 percent of my time in the office… Yet I still find myself wanting to tackle any little home task at hand and use it as an excuse to buy a new tool.
I’d describe myself as an introvert. I tend to be more comfortable at home, than going out with a big group of people. I’m kind of bad at small talk tbh, but I’m slowly getting better at being a listener. I’m actively trying to step out of my comfort zone and build relationships with people. 2025.01.26 07:49 PhatJohnT How sophisticated is MTB carbon frame fab these days?
This is a long shot, but Im really curious as to what goes on the carbon bike industry. Ive seen a ton of complaints and speculation on the current state of carbon in MTB. To the point where a big segment of riders are advocating for alloy frames.
Coming from a aerospace composites background, this shouldn't be the case. Carbon should never be in competition with aluminum in any way, except maybe price point in a volume setting. Carbon is a performance material that will crush isotropic materials (alloys) in any situation when applied correctly. The challenge is the extra engineering effort to account for more complicated analysis in applications.
So Im left wondering what is going on with the carbon influence in MTB. The only way alloys can be competing with composites is if "carbon" is now being treated as a box to be checked instead of a real performance asset.
Im guessing its because mass-markets are people who value boxes checked over actual performance. Meaning they are not skilled enough to realize the advantages of CF.
Thats it. Im drunk. Fuck you. I just wish there were better carbon bikes out there. I feel like this is an unrealized potential and the application of composites in consumer bikes is total BS.

Hello, I (27M) have had bleeding and drainage since late November from inside my belly button, 3 days before it started there was a constant slight sharp pain inside the area, it wasn't really painful so I ignored it but on the 3rd day it stopped hurting and there was blood and I've been dealing with it everyday since then.
On my first visit to my doctors she had said that it looked fine and didn't feel any bumps so she prescribed me Doxycycline (twice daily for 10 days) and the bleeding had stopped but there was still constant drainage and it had started bleeding again on the last days. She also had me do a bleeding time test but didn't tell me the results so I assume it was fine.
On my second visit she said that the skin was red but still didn't feel any bumps so she prescribed me Bactrim and Mupirocin (both twice daily for 10 days) and I took the last pill just now so I'm out of bactrim, I don't know if it helped because Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday I didn't bleed and the drainage was less than usual but after that it's back to the usual mess.
Followed up last Friday and she said it looked fine and that it wasn't red or wet inside like before so for me to finish the medicine and come back if it starts again and she'll order a ct scan, which it did so I'll have to make an appointment Monday.
Advice & thoughts? Am I overreacting in thinking that my doctor hasn't been taking this seriously? Just to preface, she hasn't looked inside and she only felt inside with her finger once during the first visit, the other visits she just feels the outside rim of my belly button and when I ask her what she thinks is going on she says she doesn't know, that this isn't her field (or something along those lines) and that if it gets worse she'll refer me to someone else.
There isn't any pain nor do I feel ill, I have not taken anything else since it started, when I have to clean the inside I clean it in the shower (morning) and with a 70% alcoholic wipe (night) both times I try to be gentle and don't poke deep inside and then I dry inside with a tissue, again as gentle as possible.

Je viens vers vous car j’ai besoin de conseils. Je fais des CDD depuis que j’ai 18 ans et je n’ai jamais demandée le chômage (par méconnaissance, pensant que, étant étudiante, je n’y avais pas droit).
Pendant l’été 2024, j’ai effectuée un long CDD de 7 mois, et en 2023, un autre de 6 mois, mais je n’ai pas demandée mes droits au chômage.
Après mon CDD d’été dernier, quelques semaines plus tard, on m’a proposée un CDI pour travailler 16h les weekends (je n’ai pas droit à la bourse CROUS).
Cependant, avec mes cours et mon travail, j’accumule environ 60 heures par semaine, et je n’en peux plus. Je sens que je vais craquer. J’aimerais me concentrer pendant un cours instant à mes études.
Je voulais savoir, si je démissionne de mon CDI, pourrais-je prétendre aux droits chômage de mon CDD de 2024 ou mes 2023 que je n’ai pas réclamées, sachant qu’à la rentrée 2025, je serai en formation à distance au CNED ?

Ciao a tutti. Lavoro in un piccolo ente locale, ufficio tecnico, laurea in ingegneria e inquadramento in categoria C2. A breve cesserà il servizio il mio responsabile, ingegnere categoria D, il quale ha anche la PO. Ora io temo che nel periodo tra il suo fine servizio e l' assunzione di un nuovo funzionario mi venga rifilata la PO e quindi la responsabilità dell'ufficio (ci sono altre 4 persone ma sono amministrativi, tutti C1), cosa che io non voglio assolutamente. Io mi sento portata a supportare il funzionario e prendere/eseguire ordini, di certo non darli... in più ci sarebbe tutta l'interfaccia con la parte politica a cui so di non piacere e quindi so che in caso la mia vita diventerebbe un inferno. La domanda è, posso rifiutare questa posizione (momentanea nomina a responsabile del servizio e PO) oppure se mi nominano c'è l'obbligo di accettare?

Hello all. Flair is for a just in case, but I don't intend on getting graphic.
I live in a place wear cycling gear and creams etc., are hard to find, and have to be imported. Not easily accessible and not necessarily budget friendly. I also live in a tropical country, so heat and humidity are the name of the game for all my rides.
I'd say my cycle is comfy enough, and with practice, I can go about in regular shorts and particular undies. Saddle sores are not particularly frequent with me.
I am, however, intending on upping the frequency of my rides, using my cycle for commutes as much as light touring, so I wonder if there are any prophylactic steps I can take. Does keeping the area well moisturised work, for instance?
Just looking for some experience in these matters, is all.
Post care, I do have like sudocrem and stuff.

Found two monitors locally for the same price (£65), both of them are VGA. One is a Hansol 910A, the other is a AOC spectrum 7VLR. The listing for the AOC says it's resolution is 1280x1024. I've never heard of Hansol before so I don't know if it's a reputable brand, but I'm tempted to buy the hansol because it's a larger screen, 19 inches as opposed to 17, has a stand, and the outside looks less scuffed. Should I get the bigger hansol or stick with a brand I've heard of before?
