Problem/Goal: My parents want me to try my luck for DepEd ranking but I am just a fresh graduate and a recent LET passer without teaching experience.
Context: I'm an education graduate (English) who recently passed the LET last September 2024. Now, my parents are pushing me to gather pertinent documents for DepEd ranking this year (February). I am a bit hesitant coz the total points for ranking is 100, and I am thinking that my points might be so low since I am not yet enrolled in master's (-10 points), and I also have no teaching experience yet since my parents didn't want me to work for a while to have some rest (-10 points). The highest points that I could get is 78.6 if I get perfect scores from my demo and TRF (my LET rating is 86.40 and I have a sure 10 points in training). I'm also worried about being judged as a fresh graduate since my fellow aspiring applicants might have been preparing for years. I don't rely solely on this since I am planning to apply to private schools after gathering the documents needed to get some experience. But don't get me wrong, I have the willingness to pursue this. Maybe I just need to know some DepEd RQA experience to get a little more encouragement.

They are more theater than truth, a duel to determine who has more clout than a meaningful dialog. And in that theater, Steve Burke looms like a self-declared Prometheus, clutching a torch of consumer advocacy, while Linus Sebastian stumbles like an excitable Icarus, soaring too high on wings of enthusiasm and ego, only to singe himself on the sun of overreach. While Marques Brownlee races past them on winged sandals, with more subscribers than both channels combined. But the real tragedy is this: none of these people are the hero, nor the villain that their audiences need them to be.
And yet, we treat them as prophets. We watch their meticulously produced videos, one draped in the armor of hard-hitting journalism, the other gleaming with the charisma of approachable fandom—and we believe, for a fleeting moment, that they hold the keys to the kingdom of PC truth. But here’s the uncomfortable reality: PC review testing is not science. It’s art masquerading as precision. An RTX 4090 duking it out with a Radeon 7900 XTX at 1080p tells me nothing about the experience I'm going to have using either piece of hardware. It’s a performance designed to inflate differences, a test of engineering only in the sense that it engineers drama for the audience. Who buys a $2,000 GPU and games at 1080p? Okay, the answer is a non-zero number, but is not typical. These benchmarks are strawmen built to satisfy a craving for resolution; numbers that scratch the itch for certainty in a landscape of subjectivity.
Let’s talk about FPS, that darling of the benchmarking world, the golden metric of performance. It’s a lie. Or, if not a lie, then at least a shadow of the truth. AI-generated frames (three for every one real frame on Nvidia’s new RTX 5090) are redefining what “frames per second” even means. FPS was always a proxy, a stand-in for something more intangible: fluidity, responsiveness, the alchemy of playability. But now, with AI in the mix, FPS is less meaningful than ever. We are measuring ghosts, artifacts conjured by bots. The numbers climb higher, but the experience remains untethered from them. My Radeon RX 6600 (non XT) handles everything I throw at it just fine on a 2K monitor. Sure, I had to lower the settings quite a bit for Cyberpunk, but who cares? The game looks great, and it feels great. Isn’t that what matters?
But the reviewers don’t care about that. They’re chasing a kind of analytical purity that doesn’t exist. Burke, in particular, stands accused of wielding the title of “quality engineer” like a scepter. But here’s the thing: he isn’t one. He’s a quality technician, experienced, yes, knowledgeable, sure, but not an engineer. To call himself such is to stretch credibility past its tensile strength. I am an electronics engineer, I spent six years in college to obtain that degree, and likr Steve, I wasn't a math wizard either; I failed Calc 1, and had to retake it, then I failed Calc 2 and had to retake that as well. It wasn't until my last semester at college when I finally got good. And I've spent the last seven years in the manufacturing industry, as a professional, now "Senior" engineer. Steve's spurious claim is not the crime of the century, but when he positions himself as a crusader against the perceived unethical behavior of others, the hypocrisy sticks in my my brain. Sensationalism may be his sharpest weapon, but it’s a blade that cuts both ways.
Regarding his merchandise, like the wireframe honeypot t-shirt commemorating the Paypal/Honey investigation and class action lawsuit, feels like a misstep. It’s clever, sure, and I admit it is a cool stylish design, but it reeks of opportunism. If Linus is guilty of failing to defend smaller creators against the likes of Honey, how does Burke justify profiting off the same misery? To fund the class action lawsuit? What guarantee is there that 100% of fhe profits are going toward that purpose, would we be asked to accept a ... "trust me bro" receipt? The shirt is a symbol of this whole sordid ecosystem, where Commerce stands in the corner of the ring, waiting for Critique to give it the hot tag.
Meanwhile, not to be outdone, Linus stumbles through his own minefield, often to the jeering chorus of anyone and everyone who doesn’t own an LTT screwdriver. Yes, Linus overstates his expertise at times, but it feels less like malice and more like the unbridled enthusiasm of a guy who genuinely loves tech and frequently is the most texh savvy person in the room. The vast majority of the time he presents himself as merely an enthusiast, and admits when he’s wrong (eventually), and his charm is rooted in that kind of relatability. Linus has demonstrated that he is very sensitive to rejection, and quick to be defensive, and speak before thinking. We all suspect egotism plays a part, but I don't get the impression that its self-grandeur so much as insecurity, and difficulty with self-esteem. Perhaps the sensitivity is related to his diagnosed neurodivergence, or something else from his personal life and history.
Ultimately, the problem isn’t Linus or Burke. I'm not really angry with Burke, or concerned for Linus. It’s the system that elevates them to a position of inappropriate authority. These are not engineers shaping the future of computer hardware or video games; they are entertainers. They are the human equivalent of the Wendy’s Twitter account, sharp-tongued and clever, but fundamentally a product of consumerism. They exist to perpetuate consumption to keep us salivating for the next shiny thing. The benchmarks, the controversies, the merch; it’s all just noise in service of the signal: buy more stuff.
And yet, here I am, watching their videos on a daily basis. I wouldn't argue if someone called me a fanboy, but I'm not loyal to either of them (although I admit that I feel a little para-social toward Jarvis Johnson, let's leave commentary youtubers out of this), nor do I believe everything they say. The truth is that even though I have friends and family, sometimes I still feel lonely, in a way that I can't describe. Youtube quiets that lonely feeling a little bit. I've actually never bought anything based off of their recommendations, and I've never bought any of their merchandise. The only thing I've ever bought from a Youtuber is the Caddicarus plushy (worth every penny). I consume a lot of Techtube: from MKHB to Daniel Owen; I'm an electronics engineer, I enjoy all the news and the spectacle of consumer electronics. I enjoy the illusion of expertise from Techtubers, even as I criticize it. But when the dust settles, I’ll still be here with my entry-level Radeon GPU, happily playing RE4Make at low settings, on a 1440p monitor, knowing that most of what these guys argue about doesn’t matter. It’s theater. It’s mythology. And the truth? Well... that's inserted somewhere between all the generated frames.
