The Villainy of Car Pride
I grew up in a world full of people who know a lot about cars. The sort of people who would never visit a mechanic, but would clatter around under the hood of their 1964 Humber Super Snipe (with go-faster stripe) until the engine would stop going "CLUNK! (Cough!)" and start going "Brrrrrrrr".
Car Pride
All of my favourite swear-words come from that time, when I was a young lad, and my father would loudly describe the lineage of his tomato-red 1970 Austin 1100, while buried head-first into its most intimate components. Often while flailing about with a hammer.
My first set of marbles came from the inside of defunct car batteries.
But I somehow managed to escape learning anything useful about them. They were these large, arcane, steel behemoths (Well... perhaps not so much the Austin 1100) full of words like carburettor or limited-slip-differential or crankshaft-connecting-rod-bearing.
You may as well say "eye of newt" or "tongue of bat" and have done with it, to be truthful.
When I was learning to drive, it was in my father's pride and joy Triumph 2500 Mk2. This was quite a short lesson, because as we were driving around an empty mall carpark one Sunday morning he said "I will clap my hands, and this means I want you to do an emergency stop". I agreed, and shortly thereafter he clapped his hands, I stamped on the accelerator, and drove it into a wall.
So I never really got the car bug.
Growing up went from "What does your dad drive?" to "What do you drive?" as my school-friends got themselves Holdens, Fords, and the occasional RX7 from the 1970s, depending on whether they were a Wankel or not.
That's actually quite a clever car joke if you care to look it up.
I had a bicycle. A racing 12 speed I was lucky enough to 'inherit' from a cousin who used to race them. If I wanted to go anywhere, it was either on my bicycle, or on a bus. I learned quite a lot about public transport during this time - and important life-lessons such as how to spot a seat with wee on it before you sat down.
Once, aged around 17, while cycling to my girlfriend's house, I took a particularly steep road, tucked in my elbows, and head-down, bum-up, broke a land-speed record, shortly before pranging the side of a Traffic Authority car, and sailing many meters through the air to land in a gutter on the other side of the road. That was the end of that bicycle.
I always remember the face of the Traffic Officer as he leaned over my nearly lifeless form, backlit by the clear summer sky as I lay there smashed and bloodied, and he said to me "Look what you've done to my bloody car!"
Friends put themselves into greater and greater debt with newer and bigger cars. I couldn't understand the appeal, when a lifetime of student debt was already looming over the horizon.
Then in fully-fledged adulthood, I found myself at gatherings where people would start talking about their BMWs or their Mercedes, like they were additional family members, as I sat there open-mouthed and thought "Bazza... you're a bloody milkman. Why have you remortgaged your house to buy a Mercedes?"
Another friend paid a small fortune for a double-exhaust kit, but couldn't hook up both exhausts, so he covered the inside of one with boot-polish so it wasn't all shiny and chrome, while the other became full of soot.
Another fitted a spoiler to a 1992 Mazda Miata! The damn thing couldn't even go fast enough to outpace a determined Dachshund, and he wanted it to look like it could break the sound barrier.
The lure of the car was very real and, as my father had become increasingly fond of saying "You just can't fix 'em yourself anymore. They've all got computers in them now! (spit) It's all electronic this, and electronic that!"
Seriously, the most fun I ever had with a car was decades ago, when I was hammering a bag of lemons up the exhaust-pipe of the CEO's E-Type Jaguar (with a broom handle), when he authorised millions to be spent on equipping executives with brand new BMWs, and then said there was no money left in the budget for our annual Christmas bonus.
So, perhaps for some the car represented freedom. For others it was a matter of status. But when you add in crippling high-interest loans, and a catastrophic rate of devaluation, for a good many, what you've got here was really just a way to ensure you never got your head above water financially.

2025.01.27 04:19 Willy_G_on_the_Bass Feel a bit bad for Harper/Hesse

First off, I think that was some egregious driving by the #48. I could understand making life difficult for the Corvette for a lap or two, but just straight up blocking and boxing him in while they were over 50 laps down was insane.
I also think the retaliation by the #4 was wild, but I was definitely rooting against the BMW at that point.
All of that said, Dan Harper and Max Hesse are two pretty exciting young guns running the full IMSA season in the #48. I haven’t followed Hesse as much, but Harper was super fun to watch in British GT in 2023 and in GTWC this year.
I’m still really looking forward to watching them race in IMSA this year, but it sucks that everyone is going to have such a bad taste in their mouth from this car because of the actions of Farfus and the calls from PMR.

I wasn’t really concerned about it until today when I realized it was still there (it’s day 3 of owning him). He was neutered the 22nd of this mont. so about 4/5 days ago. He’s also battling a cold and I’m just constantly worrying about him. He’s been urinating small pee clumps, even tho I’m adding extra water to his wet food and he’s been good about drinking. Hi! Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I recently made this interactive piece out of fairy lights and nails right above my dining table. It's meant to be an interactive display of graph theory (you wrap the lights around the nails as you like to make different graphs), specifically for Moser's Circle Problem.
My current intention is to do the outside circle in marker, but I'd love to do something a little more interesting (it's also a decoration that guests will see) for the outside. I quickly made a few ideas digitally and attached them, but I'm not particularly touched by any of them, so I thought I'd crowdsource some online. If you think of any cool ideas (especially math related ones), please comment them below! (also keep in mind that I'm terrible at drawing lol)

I used to make this is a substitute to chicken salad. I’ve been struggling with eating vegetables lately and remembered this recipe. I didn’t measure, just went with how much crunch I felt like.
Canned chickpeas - mash with fork Celery Thin julienned carrots Lots of dill pickles Red onions Mayo Lemon juice Pickle juice Garlic, paprika, cayenne powder Black pepper
Felt like it was half veggies, half chickpeas. Better over night, used to eat with on toast, today I ate half before the bread came out of the toaster.
