The direct reason for Germany to attack the Soviet Union was Soviet advanced preparations to invade ('liberate') central and western Europe. According to the video, this lottery was televised starting in 1976. And the top prize for it was 25,000 rubles. Basically the USSR ends in 1990 when the constitution removes the article that declares that the Comunist Party is the only political party, this was done by the new Congress, not by the soviets. This event means that the soviet no longer had any power. Therefore from now the Soviet Union no longer works as a soviet. Answers to your questions: Were most of [the super-wealthy Russians] able to flee the country? No. Most of them were executed by the Bolsheviks along with their families and anybody that the Bolsheviks deemed to be in league with them. However, the only reason I didn't add that originally was because I was pointing out how the Russian perspective of the Great Game helped to influence the brutality of Stalin and the Soviet regime. From the Russian perspective, their attempts to exert power over Central Asia were a counter measure to protect against Britain's attempts to influence the region. @TylerDurden, Moscow was the most strategic city in the Soviet Union. It was the primary supply depo for the Soviet Army, the primary transportation (rail and road) hub of the entire country. If the Germans had taken Moscow in Oct-Dec of 1941 The Soviet Union's logistically would have faced a significantly harder war. In effect, the Soviet Union was going to be replaced by a new creation, the Union of Sovereign States. The referendum was a political move by Gorbachev to shore up support for the federal center vis-a-vis the republics and to leverage it to gain more power during the negotiations for the drafting of the USS.

They are engaged in the vast administrative task of making a completely new set of social and economic institutions work smoothly and successfully over a territory so extensive that it covers one sixth of the land surface of the world. Meanwhile the Webbs have enabled us to see the direction in which things appear to be moving and how far they have got.
