Hi all, hoping to get everyone's thoughts here.
I'm currently a Support Analyst 6 months at a small legal tech company. I really love the company and everyone's really supportive
However my last job was my first entry into Software Development, I was a full stack dev working with Java, React and JQuery. I loved the role but the company was not at all supportive, and I ended up being unexpectedly let go for performance not being adequate.
I struggled with their tooling which was very legacy, Netbeans, Java EE, plus I was new to React and was promised training which never really happened..
Anyways i've been enjoying learning C# .NET with Blazor in my spare time, as I know that's what we use at my current company and a role recently came up for a Software Engineer.
I applied and have just been told from HR that they're opening up a 2nd role that they think I'd be perfect for, they're keeping it internal currently but it's working on sunsetting some legacy code on a 12 month secondment
There are hopes for it to go permanent, but all the other devs are working on the newer projects, so it would be me working directly with the Head of Dev, who is currently maintaining these legacy projects.
Head of Dev does seem really supportive but my questions are
- Does this sound like a good next step for my software development career?
- It doesn't matter that I'm not working on the latest and greatest projects and tooling right away, does it?
- i've been told there will be a take home test, what kinds of things can I expect? I'm expecting a .NET project interacting with an API of some kind (I know they use RestSharp so I'm going to incorporate that)

I know for a fact that on the 8th of February the capital is being rented out for a wedding of a non-citizen who has waited over 18 months to get a K-1 visa to be able to get married. Their family has spent thousands of their own money to be able to fund the event and buy plane tickets from Mexico and the rest of the event. Interrupting such an event for this purpose would be counterproductive cast a bad image on the message that is trying to be shared.
