2025.01.30 23:49 motherbatherick I inherited a stahlhelm from my father and I don't know what to do with it.
Hello, I face a real ethical dilemma. My father passed away in 2014. He had a small collection of militaria from several wars that I inherited. One of these items is a German stahlhelm (Nazi helmet) that he bought when he was stationed in Germany in the 70s, and I don't know what to do with it. My family is Jewish, so I'm baffled as to why he would even have it in the first place, but that's neither here nor there. Neither my wife nor I want it in our home. I haven't done much research on the particular item, so I honestly don't know if it's real or a reproduction, let alone if it's from WW1 or WW2. I, being a child of the 80s and raised on Indiana Jones movies, attempted to follow the mantra of "It belongs in a museum!" and donate it. This didn't work as apparently WW2 and Holocaust museums are lousy with them. I considered melting it down, but frankly, as a lover of history I loathe the idea of destroying things of historical value, even the bad guys' things. This led me to my third option, which as I'm sure you've figured out, is to sell it. Herein lies my dilemma. An authentic stahlhelm in excellent condition goes for quite a pretty penny these days. I also know that most WW2 collectors are fine people with no love for Nazism, and who just want to preserve history. Most. If I sell it to a collector however, I have no guarantee that I wouldn't be selling it to a neo-Nazi. I know there are things I can do to try to mitigate the risk, such as not selling it to an American or German collector, etc., but that's still no guarantee. I have no idea what the most ethical course of action here is, so any advice would be greatly appreciated. If there's a fourth option, I'm all ears.

i’m graduating this may and am doing dcp this fall, but i’m planning on applying to grad school for fall 2026. the grad program i was hoping to apply for requires the mcat, and i was wondering if anyone has studied for the mcat during their dcp? if so, how did you budget time for studying? also how does the process of taking time off to take it work?

I recently went down the Busy Beaver rabbit hole and tried something interesting... Developing an empirical function that models BB(n) and perfectly matching BB(1) through BB(5). Then using it to estimate BB(6).
Since BB(n) is non-computable, I knew there was no exact formula, but I wanted to see how far I could push an approximation before it broke.
What is the Busy Beaver Problem? For those unfamiliar, the Busy Beaver function, BB(n), measures the longest number of steps that an n-state Turing machine can run before halting (when starting on a blank tape). Major points of it are:
BB(n) grows faster than any computable function. BB(n) is tied to the Halting Problem, making it uncomputable for large n. Even BB(6) is unknown, and BB(7) is likely unknowable forever.
We have exact values for small nnn:
BB(1) = 1 BB(2) = 6 BB(3) = 21 BB(4) = 107 BB(5) = 47,176,870 (Proven in 2016) BB(6) > 10^{10^3} (Only a lower bound—true value unknown)
The function I developed is: BB(n) = (BB(n-1) ^ 1.5 * n ^ 3.2) + 2 ^ (2 ^ (2 ^ (2 ^ (n / 2)))) + 5000 * n ^ 7

Using this, I was able to estimate BB(6) to be ≈ 3.79×10^348,568,921,210,326,179,298,657,157,009,304,179,965,034,843,689,535,955,855,443,465,963,405,808,890
This confirms that BB(6) is far beyond human computation and exceeds even the number of atoms in the observable universe.
What Does This Mean? We know its beyond computation right now... Even with AI and supercomputers. So I guess my question is... Is it even useful to approximate BB(n), even if we can never prove it?
Would love to hear yalls thoughts!
TL;DR: I developed an empirical function that perfectly fits BB(1)–BB(5) and estimates BB(6) > 10^{10^{348,568}}, proving that BB(n) is truly beyond computation. Is this even worth doing?

I slipped on ice this morning. My left leg foot was flat on the ground as my entire body went on the ground. The best way I can explain it is imagine you're laying on your back with your hands and legs tucked in and you being as straight out as possible, trying to do that plank challenge that over took the internet. But. My left foot was bent, ankle to butt as I hid the ground. My knee didn't start hurting until about 3-4 hours later. It's a ache and enough to make limp a little. No notice swelling 6 hours later. Constant dull ache. 4/10, might want a advil before bed level pain.

We are trying to end our lease early, using the Notice of termination of a lease due to disability. We are giving two months notice and have a signed declaration from her doctor that she is disabled.
Are there any issues with this plan? Our landlord is a large corporation who will not hesitate to make this difficult for us if they can.

2025.01.30 23:49 PrestigiousBee5602 Thoughts on the Aloy/Elizabet dynamic?
Was thinking a lot about the world of Horizon and how the story could have had a more emotional impact maybe, I love Aloy as a character but think it would be a cooler juxtaposition if Elizabeth wasn’t held up as this saint like figure mostly in the second game, and if she was actually maybe even more of a villain, and Aloys doubts would be more about rising above her genetics to prove she is her own person who is a true hero who saved the world not because of her genes, but because of who she is as a person. In canon Aloy is almost treated as the reincarnation of Elizabet which I feel takes away some of her agency, although I also think it’s a very cool concept and weight she has to carry on her shoulders. Also Beta seems to be the main character to show that genetics don’t equal who you are, although I think delivering that message through the main character would hit even harder.
I’m a huge Metal Gear fan so I may be getting influenced by that as well lol, sort of like a Big Boss/Solid Snake relationship. Elizabet also being partially responsible for the fate of the world was a big plot point in the first game, but I think emphasizing that more would be a cool mirror to show how the greed of corporations and the megarich iron grip on the regular citizens of Earth led to the downfall of the world, but the new humans of the reborn Earth were all just regular people who saved it by simply being good people. Elizabet instead is more treated as the true savior, even though the population of the old world probably did not think the same. I know Ted Farro is in that role for this series, but since he has no direct connection to Aloy it doesn’t hit as hard on an emotionally personal level.
Just putting ideas out there, love this series, I think the lost mother figure idea they did for Elizabet was executed perfectly, just like to theorize on different ways Aloys story could have gone!

M21 was last year with a girl 18F in a relationship for over 5 months. Everything was going smooth and we were getting very along. It was relationship on distance (1000km*621miles*) but I used to visit her every 3 weeks for 3 days. suddenly she broke up with me 15 February 2024 for no reason. Even her mother had no clue what was going on. I was quite angry but moved on after a month because I had to keep my life going *school, work, gym, * may 18th, couple of friends called me within an hour and told me that I'm a piece of shit person and that I should die etc. Turns out she made out a lie where she claimed that I've raped her *she was still virgin*. I was in her city at that time, So I went to her home and had a conversation about it with her *even her mother had no clue that she said it* She was forced to call all the people she told the lie about me doing the disgusting stuff to her. Everyone believed me but still the thought about it kept me going insane. After I returned home I went to psychologist and been there for over a 2 months. I got myself fixed and I was doing alright.
Now to the main topic. I've had already 3 scenarios since September where I've been talking to girls but the Idea of being in a relationship is making me sick due to the possibility of it happening again. I'm not scared to talk to a girl, I've plenty female friends which told me that I'm a really good guy and I definitely can find someone, but the idea of me being in a relationship with someone is stressing me out. I've been taking antidepressant for over 3 weeks since I'm really stressed out by the situation and my sleep amount has been getting worse than ever (this week I've slept a total of 7 hours only (past 4 nights)) I Don't Know What to Do *sorry for bad grammar and English*

I’m sure this is quite a common request, but is anybody able to assist me in getting the ring? I’m playing on PlayStation and it’s one of the last trophies I need for the platinum and I’ve re-rolled adventure about 40 times now and am yet to find it. I also need to find about 5 more armour sets and fight the Pan Wolf and Claviger if anybody can also assist with those, but I’m quite confident I’ll be able to get them on my own in no time.
