2025.02.02 00:41 saintmada Is it better to go to a Canadian or American university if planning to go for usmed?
(Everybody in my family are citizens, I don't have any American relatives.) I'd like to go to med school in the US, since I want to live and practice there. Also, many people I know have applied to med school here and all have been waiting for more than two cycles with stellar GPAs. I'm an average student and I'm not confident in my luck.
So which would be better? Attending an American or Canadian university? I heard it's hard to get shadowing in Canada if not impossible. But is it worth it? I mean are there exceptions as well? Like going to a good Can uni > a state school? Do med schools even consider you domestic or nah? Does it help you any in loans? My dream school is Johns Hopkins for med and undergrad but I'm also trying to be realistic LOL 🤣
Anyone who has experience would be super appreciated!

tl;dr: ADHD meds working finally, starting a PKMS. Can't find a tool that 100% meets my needs. Advice adapting to current tools or suggest me a tool?So after a hilarious* years long journey to understand why my body adapts and neutralises certain medications within days, I finally have an ADHD medication schedule that mostly works. Along with wonderful new tools coming out, this means that I'm finally embarking on my long-term dream of having a second brain, long after Notion (what an abusive relationship that's been) promised me such a thing is possible.
After playing around with a bunch of tools (Mainlining Capacities, playing with SiYuan, salivating over Constella, I tried to love Obsidian but jfc), I have nailed down what I want:
1. Near-zero friction - If I have a thought, I want to put it in the brain, integrate it, and be done. No muss, no fuss. Audio input is doubleplus excellent feature, but not 100% necessary. Additionally: 1a. Android app - absolutely a must for capturing those "shower thoughts." 1b. Templates - I don't want to have to think about what additional information I want to add to that thought. I need a program that goes "Oh, you're adding a person? Give me their contact deets and your personal connection, here's a space for a photo if you have one." I want to be told (or set up and get reminded) what the essential object information is. Consistency across object types. Capacities is great at this. Which leads to...
2. Object types - Have found rigid object types to be FANTASTIC for my brain. It removes so much second-tier thinking, which loops back to the low friction principle.
3. Nested tags - Just how my brain works again. While I don't want to go full Johnny Decimal or similar system, I find nested tags create a layer of granularity in concept that I can access quickly (low friction) and avoids the mess of too many tags. For example, I collect good advice on handling ADHD, ASD, and anxiety. These all fall under the broad umbrella of mental health, and two relate to neurodiversity. Tagging an advice column that deals with all three, it makes more sense to me to tag them [#Mental_Health/Neurodiversity/ASD, #Mental_Health/Neurodiversity/ADHD, #Mental_Health/Anxiety] than it does to tag them [#ASD, #ADHD, #Anxiety, #Mental_Health, #Neurodiversity]. This is the heartbreaker feature missing from Capacities: If you have a counter-argument, I'm all ears!
4. Graph View - I've only just started and the dopamine of stumbling on a connection in your ideas through the web is amazing. Love it. Crucially, I really, REALLY need the web to show me what the node IS. A weblink? A page? A person? This helps me visualise exactly what's going on. Have I been collating links? Are there important people in this net? So on and so forth. Again, Capacities is dope at this.
5. Sync - Absolute non-negotiable, I work across too many devices between work and home.
Okay, what I don't need:
1. Daily Entry - Just does not gel with my brain, isn't how I organise my thoughts, and having to go back and pull apart a daily entry isn't low-friction.
2. Markdown - See low-friction. Again, open to counter-positions that aren't just "git gud."
I'm tantalisingly close, so I'm all ears!
*Regarding the meds: basically I have Gigachad Kidneys that are purging the medication from my body faster than it can be absorbed, so I'm drinking &%#$ing urinary alkaliser to slow them down. Incredibly, it's working.

I had just started using substack and don't know what other platform to use, but I might try to continue just on a protected browser vs the app bc I do want to spread this information as far as I can. It basically tries to summarize a lot of things that have quickly happened since the new administration began. Much of the information is being covered by the media but presented in a way that sort of skews the full truth and creates a narrative or wilfully ignores how it relates to other information.
I'll post a link to the reddit thread here and update once I have the blog post finalized, but basically key points from that post:
- DEI initiatives are being used as an excuse for the need to intervene and investigate how our tax dollars are potentially being wasted, but the interventions themselves are leading to tax waste.
- The people that ensure accountability for how our tax dollars are spent are being illegally removed from their positions, and they're relying on federal employees to enforce these removals. With these people gone, there is no oversight left for government spending.
- Spending freezes are being broadly issued across federal departments including our own Army, but for some reason Trump has decided now is the time to give 8,000 dismissed soldiers who were discharged for refusing the COVID vaccine 3 years of back pay. Why now?
Personal speculation is we need to be asking why the news is not making the connection between the claim that DEI is wasting tax dollars and why we would then fire the people that could actually show us the data about how tax dollars were being spent.
It seems like the DEI attack is the way to make his base feel like he's doing something for them (as well as keep the country divided and can keep us distracted while he plays both sides, big fucking surprise there) and looking into corruption, but really this and all the actions that have come since have resulted in an insane amount of money going unaccounted for, spending freezes for even the Army and defense, but large amounts of money being offered as buyouts to get federal employees to quit and back pay for those discharged military members with no nonpartisan individuals able to account for anything.
