He's undeniably an artist, and that much is clear as day. But when it comes to the finer points of his craft—specifically his rapping—I find myself at odds with the consensus. And it’s not like I’m trying to tear the man down. By no means, sir. But I do wonder if others hear what I hear.
Now, to set the record straight, this isn't a knock on Mr. Lamar's overall artistry. The man has vision, he has ideas, and by all accounts, he's working with some of the finest producers in the business. His messages are important, poignant even. But when we start talking about his skill with the microphone—his rapping, specifically—I can’t help but feel we’re putting the cart before the horse.
First and foremost, let’s talk about Mr. Lamar’s voice. It’s, well, let’s call it what it is: plain. There’s no real musicality to it, no subtlety. When he tries to pour emotion into his delivery, he ends up barking like some mechanical dog, or even worse, falling into what could only be described as cartoonish theatrics. Now, I understand that part of his act is about storytelling, and I’m not saying he doesn’t try to paint pictures. But there’s got to be a better way to tell those stories without sounding like a high school drama class audition.
Then there's the issue of writing. And here, I truly take issue. People often point to lines like "DemoCRIPS and ReBLOODicans," or the well-known K9 reference from his Drake diss, as examples of his cleverness. But let me be frank, those aren’t groundbreaking turns of phrase. They're basic, rudimentary even, lines that any budding lyricist could toss off before breakfast. And when folks tell me, “It’s not about wordplay, it’s about storytelling,” I ask them to show me an example of Kendrick's storytelling that stands out as remarkable. Because, truth be told, what I hear most often is either convoluted or merely impressive because of the way it’s packaged—not because it’s exceptional in its own right. It’s like someone going through the motions of writing a complex story, but forgetting the essential ingredient: doing it well.
Which leads me to the matter of cadence. Mr. Lamar's flow has all the warmth of a cold, robotic machine. Sure, he’s proficient, even versatile, but there’s nothing there that grabs you by the soul. It’s like a guitar player who can strum the strings at a blistering speed but can’t imbue the notes with any feeling. It’s smooth, it’s fine, but it’s about as exciting as a flat tire.
And let’s not even get started on his performances. Sure, the man works hard, hustles, and gestures with all the enthusiasm of a Broadway actor. But where’s the spark? Where’s the raw energy that makes a performance unforgettable? It’s like he’s reading lines off a script, lacking any real charisma or, for that matter, a sense of ease. Every movement, every vocal inflection, feels calculated. In the world of live performances, it’s not enough to have your body and voice working overtime—you’ve got to have that special something. Mr. Lamar, for all his effort, has yet to show me that.
Now, I’m not denying Mr. Lamar’s place in the world of music. He’s successful, he’s impactful, and I’m sure his albums will be remembered for years to come. But when it comes down to it, I’m just not sure why he’s rapping on these records. With all the talent surrounding him, it's hard to understand what makes him, specifically, the voice of these projects. His musical strengths, to me, lie elsewhere—namely in his production and the ideas he brings to the table. But when it comes to rapping, I can't help but feel like he's an artist who could work behind the scenes, contributing to music in other ways, while leaving the rapping to someone with more, dare I say, flair.
So, am I missing something? Or is the general praise for Mr. Lamar's rapping a case of overblown expectations? I’d be curious to hear what others think.

I swear to God that imma finna crash out next time I'm in closing shift, my fucking coworkers can't clean shit!
For context really quick, I work at the fryer and I'm usually put in charge to clean my station; besides the fryer, it's literally just two small tables and a fridge. With that said, there's times where I'm put on dishie duty (we don't have a designated dishwasher) and my coworkers are put then in charge to clean my station, some times they clean well 'enough' and other times when they don't even clean the dust off.
These fuckers are engrossed in the gossip and shit, that they can't run the fucking rag properly! Then I get dragged alongside their asses when 'scolded', like I'm already busy fighting the dishes and then I also have to a watch on their asses like little kids.
