I saw another post on here and just had to say this…
Normally the ones we have limerence about don’t really crush on or date those that are necessarily pretty after us. Why is this? Why do we end up getting so hurt and treated so terribly that we reach the point of limerence and they go on or obsess over someone who isn’t really that pretty? Or that amazing as they say they are? I’m not saying they look bad, it’s just someone I wouldn’t get the full blown obsession about.
I don’t mean to be rude at all, it’s just shocking to me that I’m treated so horribly and now I have to suffer in limerence and the person that they are so crazy in love with is just someone who looks like someone you would see everyday. We all deserve to be treated with respect and I remember being respectful myself, I just didn’t get the reason for me being treated terribly and everyone else being treated so kindly by this particular person. If I was literally anyone else, they would have treated me better. That’s how shocking and unexplainable my situation was and I just can’t get over it. It’s not that I loved them, it’s that they completely shattered my self image and everything about me with their rude words and condescending attitude. Tried to embarrass me in front of everyone and used me as a stepping stone, only for them to obsess over someone who is similar to me (a normal, average person) but is not me of course. I just can’t wrap my head around it….

I have chronic illnesses which mean that, while I can keep up with a full time job, some socialising, and a functional level of household cleanliness, I cannot socialize as much as my social butterfly partner and the house will never be 24/7 tip top tidy. I get periods of depression, which I have managed my whole life and it is already better than I used to be (I was formerly constantly suicidal).
It’s not that I don’t want to get better. It is that some things can be improved, some medically cannot, and improvements take time.
I try my best not to impose too much burden on my romantic partner, I can live independently and had been doing so before I met her. I don’t tell her my every ache and symptom, I don’t tell her my every mood swing. Sometimes I get sad yes, especially when symptoms are exceptionally worse, and I ask her if we can spend a bit more time together, but it is always phrased as a question. Sometimes I ask her if she can help me with something, but I always give the option for a no.
However, things have gotten to an uncomfortable point where, I’m not sure there is anything I can do to “reduce being a burden on her.”She gets regular emotional breakdowns about how she “gives everything to everyone but doesn’t get anything back” and constantly cites “(me) not getting better” as an example. But I am used to this level of health and the life I can lead with it. Sometimes I wonder if it’s just not up to her standards, and I try to tell her that it is my life to deal with, and she should take care of her life first— but she tells me that she can’t help wanting to help me because she loves me.
I have been putting some distance for her sake, but she just worries more when I’m quieter, and sometimes interprets the distance as me falling out of love with her. I don’t know what to do anymore. I want to spend time with her, but as long as I’m not perfectly healthy, it’s like that shared time doesn’t comfort her and doesn’t make her feel better, it just adds to her impression of being a self-sacrificing martyr who constantly tends to me. And maybe she is correct, but in that case, if I am imposing a burden, shouldn’t I break up with her for her own good?
The thing is that I still love her, and I know she will hate me for breaking up with her “because it is abandoning her”, but should I do for her own good? She might get sad for a while but her life will be happier once she stops feeling responsible for me right?

In early 2025 I should comfortably tick over £1m in retirement savings (M44). When I forecast the numbers out to 68, with some reasonable growth, but minimal additional savings and full retirement and some very chunky withdrawals from 57, the numbers get large. Very large. Too large I think (like 9m!).
And I'm not even a massively high earner (c.150k TC but no kids).
Obviously there are alot of assumptions in these numbers. But at this stage, it's almost unavoidable unless we have some kind of global macroeconomic meltdown (which is possible I suppose).
It's too much to spend down tax efficiently. I feel like I need to divert into different assets or go offshore in the long term.
Note - this IS NOT a FIRE question. I may or may not look to retire early. It's more a question of how to wealthy people manage a significant surplus of savings over the long term?
