Found a decent deal on a pre owned copy of this at my FLGS but it’s in a weird price range for what it is so looking for pros and cons to help weigh it up.

2024.11.26 07:23 RuneLightmage Interesting options to offer a player captured by a hag

I have a player that has been captured by a hag (going with Green but it could be any hag or even a swamp witch type of creature).
The PC got lost in the woods by making…random weird choices and forced me to eventually pull out the hex map. They got hopelessly and pc dead due to starvation levels of lost except there was an npc witch in the area. To get them back on track I had them find her. She’s all sugar and bubble gum but won’t help him for free. See, she has a sister and her sister is a big meany who stole her boyfriend and lover. If the player returns the boyfriend to a designated spot, she’ll return the pc to the town he wandered away from.
The player agrees and is taken to walking distance from the evil sister’s hut. She lives in a small, super tiny swamp surrounded by completely regular forest land. Here, she is filthy and unkempt, even her offered tea stinks of sewage. She is not aggressive as her needs are all met- she has a cadre of captured male lovers at her beck and all, all doing chores around the house and each satisfying her every carnal desire.
The chores are unfair. Everyone can leave if they complete their chores but the chores are typically impossible without clever thinking. For example, you must chop down trees and chop up firewood every day until you fill this chest with all of the wood you’ve chopped. The chest is too small to hold much wood so more chopping must be done while you figure out the puzzle but by then, you have downed multiple trees and cannot possibly put it all into the chest. Some lighthearted magic shenanigans exist as well such as logs placed in the chest rolling out and away causing chases while other logs roll away simultaneously and planting themselves and growing as trees to be chopped.
The players have all dealt with the nonsense and failed to pass any of the tests or figure any of the puzzles out.
The ‘witch’ has offered them three options initially.
1.) She’ll release the boyfriend if the pc agrees to be her paramour for a month.
2.) The pc can stay and they can keep the boyfriend, share him together, and she’ll give the pc an undisclosed gift and return him back to his town as if no time had passed at all (he’ll actually be sent back to the moment before he made the choice to leave but he doesn’t know this).
3.) Complete three sets of chores and she’ll release the boyfriend (solve three problems).
The PC adamantly refused the first two options and thoroughly failed the third. He then attempted to steal the boyfriend and was caught, engaged the witch in battle (forcing me to come up with stats as she wasn’t supposed to be a combat encounter) and lost the fight (I had her go easy on him too just to give him a chance to win with the prize).
So now he is captured and bound and the witch is giving him three new choices. What should they be?
I ran with a Green Hag as it was close to his CR and could be defeated in a straight up fight. He’s a 4th level Spiritualist with the Shadowcaller archetype. No other PCs are going to find him. He’s 110% solo in this from beginning to end. Obviously, the hag/witch/creature/whatever it is is technically quite a good deal stronger but again- this isn’t a threat to fight but a narrative and interesting side story type of encounter; your quality filler episodes in a well-done anime, if you will.

Glitch IDM Experimental - Illusion Circles Illusion Circles: Perceptual Recurrence Phenomena
Abstract
Illusion Circles is a theoretical model describing recurring perceptual distortions within cognitive frameworks. Rooted in the interplay between psychological illusion mechanisms and circular cognitive feedback loops, Illusion Circles represent a fascinating intersection of perceptual science, neuropsychology, and theoretical geometry. The study explores the implications of Illusion Circles on human decision-making, memory recall, and collective societal behaviours, positing them as an essential yet underexplored aspect of human cognition.
  1. Introduction
The human mind is a complex processor of sensory and cognitive inputs, frequently prone to illusions that distort objective reality. While traditional studies of perceptual illusions focus on isolated phenomena, the proposed concept of Illusion Circles examines the recursive patterns these distortions follow within individual and collective minds. This paper hypothesises that Illusion Circles occur when cognitive biases, memory retrieval processes, and sensory interpretations form a self-sustaining loop, leading to persistent misinterpretations of reality.
  1. Theoretical Framework
2.1. Defining Illusion Circles
Illusion Circles are described as cyclical patterns of perception where an individual or group repeatedly encounters distorted interpretations of stimuli due to internalised feedback mechanisms. This phenomenon is symbolically represented as a closed circle, where the endpoint of one distortion feeds directly into the genesis of another.
2.2. Geometric and Neuropsychological Basis
The circular model stems from the principles of feedback systems, similar to cybernetic loops in artificial intelligence. Neurologically, Illusion Circles may originate from hyperactivity within the Default Mode Network (DMN), combined with repetitive firing in the brain’s sensory cortices. This neural redundancy fosters perceptual self-reinforcement, analogous to geometrical circles where every point is equidistant from the centre.
  1. Experimental Evidence
Although Illusion Circles remain largely theoretical, several observational scenarios provide indirect support for their existence:
Case Study A: Déjà Vu Phenomenon
Déjà vu can be conceptualised as an Illusion Circle, where familiar yet misattributed sensations arise from the feedback between the hippocampus (memory processing) and the prefrontal cortex (perception interpretation).
Case Study B: Social Echo Chambers
In group settings, Illusion Circles are evident in echo chambers, where collective cognitive biases reinforce misconceptions through cyclical agreement.
Case Study C: Optical Illusions
Persistent optical illusions like the Penrose Triangle or Shepard’s Tables might reflect localised, non-reality-adhering Illusion Circles in the brain's visual processing regions.
  1. Implications of Illusion Circles
4.1. Cognitive Distortion in Decision-Making
Illusion Circles can significantly affect rational decision-making by anchoring thought patterns in a circular, self-validating process. This suggests applications in behavioural economics and the design of persuasive technologies.
4.2. Memory and Historical Perception
In collective memory, Illusion Circles may perpetuate historical myths or cultural narratives, revealing their utility in sociological and historiographical analyses.
4.3. Technological Design and Artificial Intelligence
Understanding Illusion Circles could refine algorithms that simulate human cognition, particularly in mitigating feedback loop errors in artificial intelligence systems.
  1. Discussion
The novelty of Illusion Circles lies in their unifying approach, bridging individual psychological phenomena and macro-social dynamics. However, their unproven status necessitates further interdisciplinary research, particularly in neuroscience and computational modelling, to test their validity and predictability.
  1. Conclusion
While still a theoretical construct, the concept of Illusion Circles opens new pathways for understanding recurring distortions in perception, memory, and decision-making. By framing these distortions within a cyclical paradigm, researchers can better explore the feedback-driven nature of human cognition and its broader implications.
