2024.11.26 15:30 Empty-Following Question on Tolkien's cosmology & use of 'firmament'
So I'm reading Tolkien's works for the first time and in Book 4 of LOTR while Sam fights off Shelob with the Phial of Galadriel he writes "As if his indomitable spirit had set its potency in motion, the glass blazed suddenly like a white torch in his hand. It flamed like a star that leaping from the firmament sears the dark air with intolerable light. No such terror out of heaven had ever burned in Shelob’s face before." And since his writing seems so precise, I am kinda puzzled by his choice for the word 'firmament'.
I'm not religious myself but the term has a pretty biblical origin and is mentioned in Genesis, referring to a dome framework, decorated with stars, separating heaven from earth. But is now also synonymous with the sky in general. So I'm curious why he would choose 'firmament' instead of for example 'sky'? Are the stars of Middle-earth attached to a similar dome, or is it more modern/scientific and closer to how we know Earth and celestial bodies now? Since stars play such a big role in his works it seems important to me.
I tried researching it as much as I could but went down a rabbit hole about Middle-earth being flat at first and then being round in the Third Age (so a dome-like firmament would be even weirder considering Sam vs Shelob happens in the Third Age?).
The Silmarilon (which I haven't read yet) mentions a firmament once too in the chapter Ainulindalë ("In the midst of this strife, whereat the halls of Ilúvatar shook and a tremor ran out into the silences yet unmoved, Ilúvatar arose a third time, and his face was terrible to behold. Then he raised up both his hands, and in one chord, deeper than the Abyss, higher than the Firmament, piercing as the light of the eye of Ilúvatar, the Music ceased.")
Christian light in Tolkien's legendarium wikipedia page mentions the light of the Phial/Shelob passage too, saying the term firmament seems intentional. Is it just a hint at Tolkien's Catholicism, or is the cosmology of Middle-earth actually similar?

 | Hello. This is the first time I'm trying to build a network at home that differs from the basic "install a router and forget" configuration. There are a number of requirements for the network: to direct some devices to the Internet via VPN, and to allow some devices to go directly to the network, and to decide on the presence or absence of VPN directly on them. Currently available TP Link ER 605 8-port switch Server with Proxmox, and a dedicated 2-port network card + native port on the motherboard. My current plan - at the level of TP Link ER 605, make 2 VAN ports - make a policy in the controller, which devices should go online through which WAN port - On the Proxmox server, raise the VPN inside the OPNWRT, give this container a dedicated network card for 2 ports. In my opinion, this will allow me to implement my task, in separating traffic. I have no experience in building such networks, so I will be glad to receive any advice and tips. so im gon try to keep this as short as possible. i’m in my early 20s and a couple days ago i matched w a guy. dating in general has been a little bit of an issue for me and it’s been quite a long time since ive dated someone because of my own trust and abandonment issues.
anyway, this guy, a year older than me, pretty cute but also kinda weird. and by weird in the sense, pretty much the complete opposite of me. he’s also not really out or been w a queer person so he’s kinda just exploring which already is sorta like a red flag that i’d like to be away or alert from.
but this dude is pretty much very diff than the guys id usually date or talk to. he’s super cute, simps a lot and mind you ive had my share of horrible guys to see through genuine liking and the kind that just wants to get into yo pants. this dude is nothing like it.
i’ve always had a chaotic life and i genuinely feel this guy likes me and he’s told me that too. i think i like him too but im not sure if i should invest in this emotionally or not yet. to make it worse, he’s also not in the same city but is apparently moving back to mumbai next month.
i kinda had a little fight over something really petty today, initially he was enjoying me getting annoyed at him which sorta annoyed me more even though it was in a playful way but later his behavior just changed, like it didn’t feel like fun anymore so i just got mad at him even more to which he got annoyed and then hasn’t replied since.
now i need to know if i should wait for him and see if he makes the move to figure out and sort stuff or should i do it and like apologise. i dont mind apologising but again i dont want him to feel that i like him that much that i caved which is pretty true too. im not sure if i like him as much yet to be completely bothered by it. my point being is this something i should put efforts to fix and see if it leads to something or there’s just too many ifs and buts in the long run anyway? please give me some logical advice. 🥰🙏🏼
