Hi psychiatrists of Reddit! This is an edited upload of a question I posted a while back. I didn’t get any feedback so I thought I’d post again to see if anyone has some insight.
I am a 24 year old female. As the title indicates, I have been on SSRI's since the age of 4. Mainly Zoloft/sertraline. My parents originally took me to see psychologists when I was 4 years old because I was showing symptoms of anxiety. I was diagnosed around that time with generalized anxiety disorder, referred to a psychiatrist, and prescribed Zoloft/sertraline.
Here’s some context: We were going through a stressful time as a family. We were moving, we had experienced 2 human deaths in the family, and my parents’ beloved cat had recently died as well. Both of my parents have anxiety, and anxiety and depression run on both sides of the family, so it was not unlikely that I could've been having clinical anxiety symptoms at the time. However, it is the opinion of more current therapists that I could have been prematurely diagnosed and/or feeding off of their anxiety that they were experiencing during this time. My main symptoms that my parents were concerned about were that I was clingier than usual and I was having trouble feeling safe in the new house.
Anyways, I was consistently on the medication until right around my 9th birthday. My therapist at the time decided that my anxiety was doing a lot better, so they should take me off the medication. I was weaned off, but unsurprisingly, my body had become dependent on the medication. I was having both physical and mental withdrawal symptoms. Mainly I became more anxious than I ever had been before. As a result, I was put back on the medication and I have consistently been taking it ever since. I was also diagnosed with major depressive disorder during my teen years, and my psychiatrist upped my prescription a lot.
The only times I haven't taken the meds have been when my prescription has run out or when I have forgotten for a couple of days. I experience withdrawal symptoms whenever I don't have my meds. I often get vertigo/dizziness so bad that I have had to stay home from work/school, which I literally can't afford to do. Additionally, I get very depressed whenever I miss more than a few doses.
Which leads me to my dilemma. I really would like to wean myself off my meds. I don't want to have to be on this medication for the rest of my life. I’m a young woman in her 20s and it isn’t affordable for me to spend $300 on psychiatrist visits 2-3 times a year. Also it is just a pain to go through all the difficulty that I have to go through to renew my prescription. My previous psychiatrists have not been very helpful and regularly send my prescription to the wrong place or forget to enable automatic refill so I often have to call every month to get them to send a refill to my pharmacy, even though I’m only required to have an appointment every 6 months.
It is very frustrating because I did not make this medical choice for myself, and now as an adult I have to deal with the financial and logistical consequences. I don't blame my parents for making this choice. They were concerned about my well-being and my psychiatrist at the time told them this was the best thing they could do for me. They just wanted to take care of me, which I am very grateful for.
I have spoken to a couple of psychiatrists who have said that it would be unwise for me to take myself off of the sertraline. I wonder about this as well due to the fact that my brain has developed/changed so much while on the meds. I have worried if I would even recognize the person I would be without this med that has been consistently in my system since the age of 4.
I am aware of the capitalistic nature of the American psychiatry industry. I understand that many psychiatrists would have the opinion that I should stay on the meds because they are incentivized to prescribe and therefore generate profit for the pharma company. I’m just hoping that someone can give me an unbiased opinion about how weaning myself off the meds might affect me, or if the time to wean myself off has passed.
