2024.11.26 23:40 Captain-Crunch16 Deloitte Never Payed Off My Amex Balance For My Flight To DU During My Internship
I purchased my flight to DU intern with the corporate Amex (before the official internship start date). During my internship I filed an expense report for the DU flight purchase, along with various Ubers to conferences and other firm related activities I attended during my internship.
However, Deloitte paid off every expense on my card except for the Flight to DU (Which I just found out a few days ago via an email from Amex). I’m extremely confused due to filing an expense report for the flight, along with asking multiple people during my internship on if I had to pay off the purchase personally and wait for reimbursement. (My recruiter, and others I worked with all said no, and that the firm would pay off the expense themselves). However this hasn’t been the case. I plan on calling the 1-800 number after the holiday to try and figure out what to do. But should I pay off this expense personally? I’m just very confused because my coach approved all my other expenses except this one I guess, and never said anything to me about it during my internship. (The last thing I want before starting as an analyst is a card balance from my internship).

2024.11.26 23:40 Champi0n1 [Guide] Avoiding Courier Custom Broker Fees by Self-Clearing
I recently imported a desk from the US and was looking at how to self-clear (also called self-account) my desk to save money on FedEx Ground courier fees. Most of the resources I found are a couple of years old so I just wanted to post my recent experience for anyone looking into this process.
A few things to keep in mind first:
- Not all couriers have the same fee structure.
- You probably should consider the value of your time if the fee is fairly small.
- You need to be located near a CBSA office that participates in the Low Value Shipments Program.
- You still need to pay any customs or duties owed on goods you are importing.
- Getting the package self-cleared is moderately time sensitive. You cannot accept delivery of the package if you have not yet self-cleared the package yourself. If you accept the delivery before self-clearing, you are waving your ability to self-clear and accepting the courier as your customs broker along with their associated fees.
- Cargo Control Document
- Certificate of Origin
- A Canada Customs Invoice or Commercial Invoice is preferred;
- For Personal use a Receipt may be sufficient.
- Government Issued Photo ID
- Up-to-date Tracking info of your package including Tracking # and last known location
- Wait for the package to enter Canada. The package needs to be in Canada prior to being able to begin the process.
- Once the shipment has reached Canada, reach out to your courier and ask for the Cargo Control Document & Certificate of Origin. CBSA specifically wants the Cargo Control Document, your tracking number is not a proper substitute. You can try to also ask for the Customs or Commercial Invoice at this time.
- You can try asking specifically for the “self-clear” documents, however your mileage will vary depending on how knowledgeable the customer support agent is on the phone. I had one person who knew exactly what I needed, and another person from the same department recommend that I wait until I see if FedEx sends me a bill (no really, that is what they said).
- As eluded to above, the most frustrating part of this entire process is trying to get a hold of someone competent. Sometimes you may just need to hang-up and call the courier back and hope you get someone else.
- Take these documents to a CBSA office and ask the officer you would like to self-clear a package.
- Please be friendly to these folks, they want to help you get what you want.
- After the CBSA officer approves of your package documents, they will stamp your Cargo Control Document and forward you to the Cashier. Once you pay any applicable taxes and duties owing, the cashier will issue you a stamped Casual Goods Accounting Document.
- I found steps 3 & 4 took about 10-15 minutes, not including travel time.
- You then need to send a copy of this Casual Goods Accounting Document to your courier as proof that the shipment has been cleared and any applicable taxes or duties have been paid for. Typically taking a photo/scanning the document and emailing a PDF is sufficient.
- At this point you can now accept or pickup your shipment now that it has been self-cleared.
- If the courier asks for a physical documents showing proof of payment and other approved documentation, provide a copy of the stamped Casual Goods Accounting Document. Hold onto the original Casual Goods Accounting Document for your future reference.

- Ask for an email address as you may need to email the agent back and forth over the duration of the process.
Questions What if my courier is just going to drop off the shipment in front of my house without getting my signature or explicit approval? Honestly, I don’t know. At this point you could try self-clearing anyways and disputing your courier’s fees if they try to collect them from you. Alternatively, you could also try to ask your courier to hold your package for you at their warehouse for pickup.
FedEx Express vs. Ground and Customs Fees FedEx Express includes a lot of their customs handling fees as part of their shipping fee when they accept a package. Accordingly, there is not as much to be saved by self-clearing a package here. FedEx Ground does not include these handling fees, and charges an increasing rate based on a variety of factors. For example, the desk I was importing would cost me approximately CA$150 in courier fees, not including GST and Duty. Source
In Closing I would not self-clear every imported shipment. Your time is valuable, especially if the total courier fees end up being a low convenience fee relative to your time. However, it is something you may want to calculate and consider for higher value shipments. For example, I saved roughly CA$150 on a ~CA$1,350 import in just courier fees by self-clearing. It would be nice if Canada had the ability to request clearance electronically rather than needing to go in person, but that is a topic for another discussion.
