I haven't heard anyone talk about this before but it jumps out at me throughout the series.
The angels clearly owe a lot of their appearance to their father, but there are always the likes of Matariel and Sandalphon who just do their own things. These can be explained by convergent evolution (Sandalphin closely resembles earth radiodonts and Matariel resembles earth opilliones), but this does not explain the likes of Sahaquiel, Arael and the eighth angel, who share little resemblance if any to earth life, but are deadringers for biblical seraphim. It makes sense thematically for them to look like real-world angels, but 'angel' is just a word given to them by modern humans. There is nothing in the lore that says these things are actually THE figures in abrahamic faiths and countless plotpoints imply against this reading. So why do angels look like things from human culture and earth's biosphere? Because they're fucking nerds!
In the fetal state they seem to look like weird humanoid embryos, but once they're born they take on a new form. So where does this form come from? They probably made it up! Maybe they can pick up radio broadcasts, maybe they can telepathically probe our cultural consciousness, maybe papa Adam reads them bedtime stories every night, but they have to be getting it from somewhere, right?
But let's be honest. You can argue against all of this! Having long spindly legs has utility, that doesn't mean matariel loves spiders so much. Having wings and glowing? Sometimes that's just how you're born! It doesn't mean these angels know what they're mimicing, it just kind of happened.
... Right?
... Right???

Not only does its design draw from the human-designed 'analog clock', it is also LITERALLY a fucking DIPPY BIRD!!! Think about that! How would an angel know what a sippy bird is, huh? How would it know? There is NO way to explain the 7th angel without accepting that it is, on some level, staring at human culture and copying what it sees. 7th has to be the biggest nerd of all too, cause really, how many times do dippy birds even show up in movies and TV? I can only think of Alien by Ridley Scott. Anyways, I think this about proves that human culture decides what form angels take and not the other way around - unles Miles fucking Sullivan was piloting Evas back in the 1940s.

I'm currently struggling with depression and anxiety, and I'm trying to find a path to genuine, lasting happiness and reduced suffering. I've been drawn to yoga (not just the physical poses, but the whole eight-limbed path) as a potential way forward.
My main question is about one of yoga's principles: sexual abstinence/celibacy. I'm torn about whether to follow this practice.
On one side:
- Sex can be addictive and provides only temporary pleasure
- Maybe abstaining would lead to less desire and more peace
- Many spiritual traditions recommend it
- Research shows relationships and intimacy contribute to happiness
- I already struggle with social anxiety and loneliness
- I don't have many close relationships or physical touch in my life
Any insights from those who've wrestled with similar questions would be appreciated.
