2025.01.18 18:30 Regular_Mention_2403 Direct report calls for personal issues
Not much more to it than that. I(42M) have a little more than a dozen direct reports. The youngest one(21M) has in the past few weeks called me outside of work a few times a week to ask mundane non work related questions essentially about adulting or to tell me something that happened to his apartment or car that has nothing to do with work and won't impact his ability to come to work.
Essentially I feel like he's calling me like I'm his dad or something.
I do not know how to politely get across that I cannot fulfill that kind of role. I cannot give him advice outside of work. This guy performs ok, at like a B level. But he seems to really not have his life together at all outside of work and in particular seems really bad with money. He came from a much lower paying job and is earning more money than he ever has but quickly overextended himself with it. Maybe if he was more put together he would be an A level employee, but I can't take responsibility to teach this guy how to be an adult.
I honestly don't know how to handle it. Obvious answer is I should tell HR I am getting a little rattled by his calls. Or in our next 1:1 performance meeting just try to get all of his issues out of the way and then ask him not to call about this stuff.
Anyone deal with something similar?

Things are going to get more expensive and tumultuous in the US, but I learned the rest of the world will move forward as the US makes enemies with other countries and goes on the decline.
Background: I am American while my husband is a green card holder from a southeast Asian country. We live in the US but are visiting my in laws as we plan our move to their home country.
My in laws are very successful and influential in their home country, to the point they rub elbows with multi billionaires (literally the richest people in their country) and high ranking politicians are always coming to them for support and donations. They are in a special position where they are actively involved in helping their developing country move from agriculture based to more industry and manufacturing and also have deep insight and connections into their country’s government and policies. They are amazing people who despite their wealth, funnel a lot of it into their community, focusing on creating more jobs and opening schools in rural communities. Looking at them, you would never believe they are so successful.
How others are benefitting: At our first family business meaning in laws told us the government of southeast asian countries believe we have committed economic suicide. They tell us there is a huge surge of Chinese businesses coming to their country to open factories. They are apparently circumventing the tariffs imposed by the new administration and now these small southeast Asian countries that do not have tariffs imposed on them will be basically exporting Chinese products to the US under a different tag (I don’t know the technicalities or details on how this works…this is just the gist of what I understand). My in laws will likely break into the billionaire bracket soon due to this domino effect. They are being offered multi hundred million contracts in pure profit to open these factories on their many properties. It’s looking like several southeast Asian countries will be financially benefiting from the decisions of the new president. China is already finding loopholes so the new president and his supporters are not sticking it to China like they think or want. In fact, they are improving relations between China and other countries…
My in laws didnt want to profit from the decline of the US because it was the country of freedom and progress. Everyone agrees that it would be terrifying if Russia or China became the new world power. But if it’s going in that direction and the US is hurting international relations and its economy, might as well take advantage and use the benefits to further the progress of their own people.

My financial situation is becoming pretty grim. Nobody wants to hire. Only places that reach out to me or wanna give me a shot are pyramid schemes or scammy insurance/car sales places. Verizon really wants to hire me but its commission only and seems risky. I know DoorDash will let anyone drive so ive been thinking about trying it. Im not looking to make a living off of it, but maybe to get around 500 bucks a month from it? 50 bucks a day maybe? How long would that take most people? I live in a smaller town so its not as busy (around 150k people) its busy enough, but just wondering what that opportunity would look like.

referring to wiki_Diazonium_compound , aryl-amine reacts with acidified nitrous acid to give ArNN+ with a triple bond between the nitrogen atoms. Is this reaction in aqueous solution? If so, would it be possible to use aryl halide+AlCl3/FeCl3 in nitrogen to get the same result ArNN+?
If it is possible would it be a feasible route to fix nitrogen in further steps to get ammonia from the diazo compound?
