Welcome back to Smash ‘Em Up Sunday!

I know that the campfire for this feature was beloved, and I would like to bring it back for you all, but I do not have a guaranteed time for that to happen yet. Please bear with me while I figure that out.

Last Week
There was 2 stories last week!
There was not enough stories to have a community choice or Aly’s choice!
I spent this last week writing romances myself, and am just as ready as everyone else to switch gears. Maybe.

At any rate, the genre for this week is Slipstream
Slipstream is… well, a slippery type of fiction that can be a little vague but a lot of fun to read once you get there.
this genre blurs the boundaries between reality and the surreal, crafting worlds where the ordinary meets the extraordinary in unexpected, thought-provoking ways. Expect dreamlike narratives, shifting realities, and unconventional plots that defy traditional genres. With its mix of the familiar and the bizarre, slipstream explores themes of identity, perception, and the human experience, leaving readers questioning what is real and what lies just beyond the veil of the everyday.
Of course, we only have 800 words, so feel free to twist any of that to suit your needs!

How to Contribute:
Write a story or poem, no more than 800 words in the comments using at least two things from the three categories below. You have until 11:59 PM EDT/EST 25th January 2025 to submit a response.

We're at Royal Pacific, our second time. Both times the rooms have just felt generally unclean. The sheets are stained, that thin little blanket they put on top seems unwashed and dirty. I know hotels are hotels but we stayed somewhere off Hotel Tonight for our first universal trip and it felt so much cleaner. Plus I hopped into the shower and found a giant nest of hair over the drain. Makes me question if the shower was cleaned at all.
What's your general experience with housekeeping at universal hotels?

 | Port hasn't changed at all. Yeah the loot sucks now that theres no lockdown, but no lockdown means the timmies are now running normal. Had a near 900k raid the other day as well without any misc items. 2025.01.20 04:10 GonzoVideo3000 HFW: Incrdible game but the climbing is very bad
I'm at the very first "core dungeon" and there are these ledges that go in and out so you have to time your jump and climbing but for some reason she cannot jump to the right properly to grab the other ledge. She seems to fall off/let go if I get too close to the edge or she rolls off, best case scenario she jumps to the right but lands next to the ledges shes supposed to grab and falls down. I don't know if it's the controls or some sort of puzzle that I'm not understanding. Regardless it feels pretty weird and finnicky. The mountain climbing hasnt been too bad so far but this part has really shown the cracks in the climbing mechanics for me

I watched some YouTubers play this game and then I decided to play it myself. In my first playthrough, I think I am missing some dialogues from the Stout(I saw in the video), I think is it because I didn't die even when the Angler boss cheated. I beat the final boss as well, without losing once to any boss. I want to know should I restart the game and like am I meant to lose against the Angler boss. Also after beating the final boss, there were some videos and I watched them all and then the game restarts. I don't understand, all my cards are gone.

Growing up together couldn’t have been a better way to be fond and best friends with each other— except now we were only acquaintances.
Since our parents were best friends, we grew up together. We played outdoors, had game nights with our families, and spent a lot of time together. It only so happened that we grew apart in middle school. And in high school we weren’t in even the remotely same friend groups. Talk about growing apart.
I am a goth girl, dressed in all black with black and maroon hair. I’m pierced and have some tattoos that I rebelliously got behind my parents back. I dabble in a bit of weed and drinking- sneaking out to party or hang with my friends. I have never taken any schooling seriously- not because I’m dumb- but because I hate it and have a hard time fitting in. I would often write, on a blog with a pen-name, poems, and a journal here and there. I wanted to be an author- an idea my parents were not fond of. Which was part of the reason of my rebelliousness. I have a few friends but remain independent and introverted and mostly a loner due to my own avail.
You on the other hand, are a popular straight A student. You’re tall, handsome, and have a way with words. You are easy to trust with your good reputation. You have a great academic background, and spend most of your time volunteering, sports, clubs. You were spending much of your time prepping and preparing for college and getting into medical school because that’s what your parents expected from you. There was so much pressure to be perfect and keep yourself together. You barely had time to yourself! Even then you are optimistic and have a lot of social avenues in your life to help with this future plan.
The summer leading up to senior year, is when my parents had enough of my behavior. They concocted a plan.
They were to hire you as my tutor for the entire summer leading up to senior year.
Unbeknownst to them, our bond would rekindle. Even though we were two entirely different people, a spark would ignite between us- one that many people would question and have doubts about- but something that was very strong.
He whom would calm her rebellious phase and her whom would open his eyes up to the world of freedom and adventure.
Who’d guess that we’d be good for one another?
- Be literate.
- Use quotations when characters are talking.
- Use either 1st OR 3rd POV. I don’t like to combine them.
- Have experience with RPing. I have 8 years under my belt.
- No character controlling!
- Be creative and open minded! Bring ideas!

With the widespread of misinformation and the lack of understanding and education of how to spot it, having comments disabled only allows posters to spread fake information without the consequences of being called out for it.
If you put out a controversial opinion or statement you should not be able to hide from the criticism and debate that viewers will give you.
Disabling and removing or limiting comments is cowardly. Either own up to what you said and deal with the consequences or don’t post at all.

2025.01.20 04:10 LeadPotential4437 Cursed Metal Shards - They are farmable!
 | For RoW and Ghost farms, most don’t venture to the 13th or 14th floors to farm, due to the DM-200s, and how they can’t travel down hallways, shoot poison gas, etc. Not sure most have remembered the DM-201s, a rare variant that shoots corrosive gas. Those can drop Cursed Metal Shards. I also learned that neither the DM-200s or 201s will spawn in the room where you and/or the ghost is. So, what I did, was set my ghost up, went to a separate room (like an altar) that also would not normally spawn one, and wait until the ghost is no longer killing any mobs. That means all the mobs are DMs in the rest of the floor piled up in rooms. It takes a while, but you will get the occasional DM-201, and can get a single shard from it (dropped every time for me so far). Curious if anybody has any experience using the ATSAME5x series QSPI in Serial Memory Mode intended to use external QSPI flash, directly mapped to address 0x04000000 - 0x05000000.
The documentation describes this functionality for the purpose of interfacing with external flash, and in particular shows off the XIP functionality - I'm interested in a use case of using the QSPI SMM, to interface with a QSPI PSRAM, thus mapping external RAM to 0x04000000.
Anybody have any experience with this, and if so - what did you find?

2025.01.20 04:10 adhochandle A few questions about the cosmic microwave background
The CMB is said to have a temperature of 2.73 K or whatever it was, and it is supposed to originate as energy released during recombination by some mechanisms I still don't get, but aren't relevant to my question (I don't think). The only part that I think is relevant is that the eventual emission was black body radiation, which has a specific signature. So, something very far away and back in time, emitting thermal radiation, which has subsequently redshifted to hell from where we stand.
But then I see this same figure floated around as the physical temperature of "empty space". Which would make sense if the CMB was taken to be the black body radiation of this "empty space" (the thin matter in it), but nobody seems to be saying this at all. Is that a blown-up misconception? Or does it reflect the fact that, given the ubiquity of this radiation, everything (not shielded from it or actively cooled) is bound to be heated up to this temperature if it would be otherwise colder? Or some other relationship that escapes me?
Also, if I understand correctly, the equations for black body radiation predict the brilliance for every frequency from just the temperature (and density?). Does the whole distribution of intensities across frequencies for a given temperature, once red/blue-shifted, match that of a body physically at the temperature corresponding to the shifted intensity peak frequency? Or do the two curves look different? A short befuddled look at Planck's law suggests to me it's the latter at both relativistic and nonrelativistic Doppler shifts, unless I'm missing some mathematical wizardry reduction by not putting the two equations together with pen and paper. But no, I must be missing something, since it is the whole distribution of the observed CMB and not just the peak, that matches the temperature of 2.73 K (according to this graph from wikipedia), so no one could think it is a redshifted emission by matter at a higher temperature if the math didn't say it'd look the same either way...
Yeah as soon as I said wikipedia I went "better check the actual source of the data just in case" and I did, took me half an hour to be looking at the right source and source of source, and now my confusion is mounting.
To start with, the "data" this graph uses are not observational data at all, they are literally the numbers for the computed black body radiation for 2.725 K according to Planck's law plus some very small residuals coming from actual data. This may be relevant info in the context this table is used, which is to figure out how well these residuals match the known orbital motion of the Earth if I understand correctly, but they have nothing to do with the actual CMB as observed. No wonder the agreement looked so perfect. Then I found the actual paper those residuals are pulled from, with a table in it (table 3), which after an hour I realized the header for didn't say "measured spectral irradiance of CMB" or the likes, but "dipole spectrum and residuals" - which seems to be talking about something else, not sure what physical magnitude, though it calls the values "measurements" (and the units are KJy/sr). I can't find an actual source for actual measured data for CMBR spectral radiances, can anybody help? I'd love to have a look at it, whether or not I can understand anything from it.
Also, I'm encountering the concepts of radiance and irradiance and I'm struggling to understand how they're applied here. To explain my confusion: we have for example solar irradiance which expresses the amount of power received per unit area, from the sun as a source. I'm gonna keep going on from here, though I'm not sure. We could use the same concept for any other star, for example (right?) and it would be a measurement of how much power we're getting per unit area from that specific star. How would this be measured? We obviously have to block any other light the best we can, and let light through only from this star, which suggests some form of a pinhole tunnel? Is this correct? If so, how do we get a meaningful unit area? The more I think of it the wronger this pinhole tunnel feels... it seems impossible to fabricate if it would even physically work (I just remembered lenses and curved mirrors exist, those probably have something to do with the setup). But yeah at least conceptually it seems identical to measuring the Sun's, both expression's of a body's "apparent luminosity". The amount of energy received from a (distant enough) radiating body will be directly proportional to the area receiving it. If we know the distance to the source, we could convert unit area into solid angle, and for example calculate total emitted power for the body. (Right?) Here's my question: how do we incorporate both "per unit area" and "per solid angle" into a physically meaningful quantity with units of radiance?

Apologies for what is likely a popular thread this time of year
We have a cabin in the woods. Insulated the crawl space (foam) this last summer so this js the first winter keeping the water on. So far so good. We have the insulation and an HVAC with 2-3 heat vents down there, furnace is down there too.
My thermometer in the crawl space is showing 40-45 degrees even as it is 0 outside. Main cabin above that area is 70.
Anyway my question is about leave a drip We have 3 bathroom sinks, a kitchen sink, a shower and a tub. Leave a drip in all of them? Even the showetub? My thinking is you will say yes, because the idea is to keep all of the supply lines from freezing not just a few but idk thats why I am asking. Or you will say hey man 40-45 aint freezing so no drip needed
