2025.01.21 00:44 miserablemister How to not enter sensory overload as an artist with ADHD who always gets overloaded but wants to pursue it?
Hey, I'm 17 years old with ADHD and absolutely love art. I've been drawing and making fanart since age 10, and really started considering pursuing it at age 13. I have no problem drafting stories and all the other things I need, but when it comes down to sitting down and drawing it's a NIGHTMARE.
I tend to get hyper focused on improving my mistakes and perfecting things. I like for things to appear on paper exactly how I drew them in my head, as most do, but it NEVER comes out. Then, the music gets too loud. Then, the lighting looks weird so it's messing up my art. Then, I lost my favorite pencil after just finding it 20 minutes before I started drawing. Then, no music matches the vibe. My head physically hurts from trying to understand what I'm doing wrong. Then I start searching stuff on why I'm feeling like this, then I start searching how to fix it, and by the time I figure it out, I'm so overstimulated that I start crying and have to take another 20-30 minutes to cry it out and calm down. At that point drawing is disgusting to me, I don't have the little bit of desire it took me DAYS to obtain, and the paper is ripped up anyways.
I love art, I love improving and learning a creating like I said. I love having something that entirely I created, and that I can do whatever I want with. But it seems even practicing is too much for me. I don't know what I'd do without art.
TL;DR - I overstimulate myself when it comes to art and it's starting to feel impossible to improve and pursue my dreams.
Are there any neurodivergent artists who can relate? Tips are greatly appreciated.

Whew! I can’t believe it, but I’m finished! This was my last class, and I passed the OA today. I don’t know what to do now, lol.
This class was difficult for me at first because the text was so dry and boring. It took me a little while to find the study materials that ultimately helped me get through this one. The most helpful resource was the PowerPoint slides for each chapter, which can be found under the Wiley Resources in the course. The flashcards in this same section have a quiz function that was helpful because I unfortunately didn’t realize that you can’t retake the module quizzes and unit tests until it was too late. Working through MCQs is an effective study strategy for me.
Another heads-up for this course: if you fail the OA on the first attempt and haven’t passed D105 (IA3), you will have to pass that before you can retake the OA.

My check engine light came on along with the traction control and brake light over lunch break today. When I started my car to drive back to work it wouldn’t rev past 1500rpm in park or achieve more than 5mph at full throttle. I shut my car off and restarted it then would rev normally in park but runs rough and underpowered while driving. Temp gauge is normal, no unusual smells etc. It’s 36 below windchill in MN today and my car barely started this morning, if that would have anything to do with it. I made an appointment with my mechanic for tomorrow and hoping it’ll make the trip. Just wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar and what the cause was and/or if it’s weather related due to the frigid conditions. Any advice and input is appreciated.

Wasn’t sure where to post this but I figure there are a fair amount of millennials listening to bill maher. And yeah I know I’m not his biggest fan but I listen bc he does something other left/dems don’t do. With that outta the way I swear you would think after the last 8 years of accurately criticizing Trump, he’d continue but in this latest episode he really seemed toned down, unworried, almost like he’s worried about rocking the boat with Trump coming into office. Did anyone else get that sense or am I overthinking it? I mean I really get the sense that many people (news personalities, critics, celebrities, show hosts) are doing some form of “cozying up” bc they know Trump has essentially unlimited authority since coming into office with full immunity (thanks SCOTUS) and a full working knowledge of the office. Frankly, the toned down version of him kinda worried me. I know this all sounds funny. But this makes me think they fear him in a very real way now, and that is worrying.
