2025.01.22 04:22 Tackley_ Is It Rude or Cultural: Brazilians Walking in Front of You During Demonstrations?
I’ve noticed a strange cultural habit during class that I’m curious about. During the professor’s technique demonstration, the class typically forms a circle around him, but it’s often casual and a bit disorganized. The professor doesn't care where people position themselves - people are free to move around and observe from different angles. He doesn’t always organize himself consistently, so sometimes you have to reposition yourself to get a better view.
What I’ve found a bit frustrating is that the Brazilians in the class often walk right in front of you to get a better view, blocking your line of sight for a moment. It’s not a huge deal, but I find it a bit rude, especially because as they cross in front of you, they can see everything, while you’re left craning your neck to see around them.
I’m American, and I feel like we would typically walk behind someone in that situation, not in front. In cultures like Japanese, this would probably be seen as really rude. So, my question is: do Brazilians not think anything of this? Are they unaware, or is it just part of the culture? I’m wondering if it’s more of a confidence thing or a kind of “dominant” move, since it’s their art and we’re visitors in their space. Or maybe I’m overthinking it—curious to hear your thoughts!
