2025.01.22 09:52 juliya_k212 Wastage if using large valued pole numbers in _cache

The Tower of Hanoi requires 3 poles: a source pole, a destination pole, and a temporary pole. Although we could call these poles whatever we like, there will always be 3.
In Green Quest 2, we use a vector of vector of vector of strings for our _cache. To keep things simple, we use pole #1, #2, and #3 to refer to the 3 necessary poles for any Tower of Hanoi puzzle. Additionally, pole #j corresponds to index j of _cache[num_discs]; pole #1 is _cache[num_discs][1].
We are not using _cache[num_discs][0] because we don't want to call them pole #0, #1, #2 (although you technically could). This is fine because any unused indexes are initialized as an empty vector. Using sizeof(), I tested that my _cache[0] and _cache[num_discs][0] used 24 bytes of storage. I agree that this is tiny.
However, the Enquestopedia posed the question if using large valued pole numbers could still be considered a tiny bit of storage. First, assume J is the smallest source pole # you're using. Then, _cache[num_discs] will need an empty vector from index 0 to index J-1. That's J empty vectors that are just...sitting in storage for no good reason. You'll never touch those first J vectors. On top of that, _cache[num_discs][J] will also have J empty strings (for all the non-existent destination poles). This is indeed wastage.
\*I'm using J instead of N to be consistent the naming _cache[n][j][k] in the Enquestopedia***
Compared to the KB and MB we typically see of file sizes, I suppose J*24 bytes is relatively small. Taking J = 200, that's only 4.8 KB. However, my Hanoi.cpp file is 3 KB... Unless you have a very compelling reason for using large valued pole numbers, I would stick to #1-3.
I think the worst thing would be to use large pole numbers and follow a tabulated approach though. See Elliot's post.

2025.01.22 09:52 Wooden-116 New crosstrek heater smell

I just purchased a new crosstrek 4 days ago. I noticed after leaving work tonight that I had a weird smell coming only from my driver side middle vent when the heater was running. It smells like coolant but I've read it could also be from using the washer fluid. I did use the washer roughly 12 hours before noticing this smell. About 180 miles on the vehicle and about 12⁰ outside if that helps any.
Any idea if this is a normal deal with the vehicle breaking in? First new car I've purchased.

2025.01.22 09:52 Annual_Swordfish263 Seller sold me fake DVDs and then smashed up the box to justify a partial refund.

The DVD box set had two very obvious spelling mistakes on the back.
The seller swore blind that they weren't fake, insisting that all the official box sets have typos (despite me showing a photo example of the Amazon box set with correct spelling), and then reluctantly offered a refund.
They only sent 30% of the purchase amount and uploaded a photo of the box, which they'd heavily and deliberately damaged (looks like they drop kicked it across the room), blaming me for it.
I've opened a case, but will I get a refund? This person is clearly unhinged.. I'm also a bit worried that they have my address.

2025.01.22 09:52 Popular-Shine1033 Need advice on possible change in center stone size

Ring I bought has a round, excellent cut diamond center stone, color D, average diameter of 6.52 mm (1.05 carat). Very sparkly! I’m waiting for the stone to get set. The cathedral setting has 6 small marquise side stones (3 per side), totaling maybe 0.5 carats I think. I chose this center stone size because that’s what the sample of this ring at the store had, and I pretty much immediately fell in love with the look. I thought that size would be in her general ballpark for taste, but I didn’t have more specific preference information at the time.
Girlfriend recently tried on a solitaire ring with a fake, plastic-looking stone. I measured the stone with calipers to be 6.35 mm diameter. She said of this stone, in regards to her engagement ring which she hasn’t seen yet, “I wouldn’t want the center stone bigger than this. Maybe smaller.”
I need to decide if I should keep the center stone I currently have and let her decide after I propose if she wants a smaller center stone. Or if I should exchange the stone for a smaller one now because this one will be too big for her taste. I don’t want her to try and force herself to like a stone that’s bigger than she prefers. She might be too nice to say anything.
How noticeable will this size difference be, given the ~0.15 mm diameter difference and (from what I’ve read) brilliance in an excellent cut diamond can make it look bigger?

2025.01.22 09:52 Emergency_Ability354 lost and burnt out - any advice?

I (25, in the UK) am kinda losing my mind. Since covid i feel like ive been stuck in hospitality and can’t seem to get out of it. I have a BA in English Lit but cant seem to find anything that actually motivates me to work in? I spent a few years applying for publishing jobs with no experience because in my mind i like books so I’ll work with books. The pay always seems awful and the job market is insane at the moment, and the constant rejection has me feeling like it isn’t worth it for an industry i don’t really care about. I’ve started looking into marketing as I had a friend help me out with an internship in her department and seemed to enjoy it! But that’s now my only experience outside of hospitality. I’m not shutting out publishing as I want to keep a wider search and I did work for a publishing magazine for a bit. Basically, I need suggestions for something full time that isn’t hospitality to help me out while i continue my job search (as I know there’ll be a million rejections first and it’ll take a hot minute in this climate) because i’m experiencing some majorly intense burnout and feel extremely lost, so any advice will be appreciated!

Hi all, I’m planning on buying a 20 plate jag and was wondering with the new VED system do I have to pay the first year rate first then standard or does the first year count from when the car was registered in 2020? Alternatively if I tax it before April 2025 does this mean I’ll pay based of the band system ?
