First of all, I’m going to have to state that I’m not an American and that I’ve only been to the US on holiday thrice, so I’m sure there’s much I’m ignorant about. One of the most interesting questions I’ve come across online is where the American Midwest’s borders are.
As with any other region, it’s very fuzzy and there’s no common consensus. One thing that bothers me though is people complaining that it’s not actually in the middle of the country: I think it’s important to set this in the perspective of 19th century America, where the Great Plains were already in the Wild West, and where the Appalachians were kind of seen as the border of civilisation. Having said that, I’d be curious to know what your perspectives on this topic are. Feel free to upload your own maps in the comments, like I did my proposal!
Finally, just a few notes on why I drew the lines where I drew them: 1) Rochester and Buffalo are industrial, Great Lakes, snowy towns, that seem to have a lot more in common with Cleveland, Toledo or Detroit than with the rest of New York. Syracuse and Utica give off a similar vibe to me, but the lack of the lakes and simply being too far east disqualifies them from being in the Midwest; 2) Pittsburgh, southeastern Ohio and northeastern West Virginia are old industrial areas tied with the ribbon of the Ohio river. However, If Appalachia were considered a region on its own, I would put them in that region. For the purposes of this map, we’ll assume there’s only the Midwest, the Northeast or the South; 3) Northern Kentucky wasn’t much of a slave plantation area before the civil war, while Louisville instead was a big paddle steamer and industrial town on the Ohio. I included the bluegrass region too, because it doesn’t fit in too well with the Appalachians or with the Tennessee river valley; 4) Kansas City, Des Moines and western Minnesota don’t really feel like they have too much in common with the broader industrial and river navigation theme that I’ve arbitrarily assigned to the Midwest. Kansas City was famously the head of the Santa Fe and Oregon trails. I think the whole area west from there, up to the rockies and down to Texas could be considered its own region, the “Great Plains” or something, because it feels quite different from all its surroundings.

Guy Pearce's recent interview quote about his ex wife being the "love of his life" despite being in a happy long term partnership with the mother of his child got me thinking.
Over 50 it is only natural that many of us have been in previous significant relationships. I'm not sure I believe in the idea of a "love of your life" but certainly many of us have loved long and deep.
Many of us (if we're not psychopaths) will always carry around sadness and grief about those relationships (for loads of different reasons).
My question is how do we know, both for ourselves but also when we meet someone new that there is enough space amongst that sadness for something new? Specially, how can we sound out others to feel confident that they are in good enough possession of their hearts that there's space for us too?

 | Hi all I'm redoing my garden and I have some plans for my vegetable garden. To preface, I have lots of compost already and I have 3 piles. Apart from the pictures, I have around 8 fruits trees around the whole plot and I try to focus a lot on pollinators. My soil is labeled as "pa" by WRB and refers to Podzols, a soil type common in sandy environments. Characteristics include:
Outside I want to go for stuff I use a lot in the kitchen: carrots, onion, leek, celery, etc... Hi everyone,
I took my first ACCA skill level exam (remote) for this Dec session, and I had a pretty rough experience with the exam software—specifically with the Excel and Word setup. The issue wasn’t about the tools themselves but how they were displayed on the screen.
During Section C, the Excel/Word windows were stuck in a small portion of the bottom-left corner of my screen. Half of the right side was taken up by the requirements, and the left side was crammed with information. The left pane had a scroll bar, but the right pane didn’t, and I could only adjust the overall screen ratio.
I found myself constantly bending my neck to focus on the small window for two hours straight. It was nothing like the CBE practice platform we use for preparation. The layout felt restrictive and caused unnecessary stress during the exam.
Has anyone else faced this issue? Is this how the layout is supposed to be for all exams, or was this just a glitch on my end? If you’ve found a way to work around this or improve the experience, I’d really appreciate your insights.
