Chapter 1 - Malfunction Wren
The malfunction hurt like a motherfucker.
Wren knew that something was wrong before she even opened her eyes. Every part of her body was in pain. She imagined this was what she’d feel if someone repeatedly bashed her head into a cement wall and then dropped her onto a bed of needles.
But her eyes hurt the most. Someone was shining a light directly onto her face. It was so bright that her eyeballs felt like they were burning. Tears dribbled down her cheeks and over the curve of her chin.
She tried to wriggle free so she could use her hands to block the light, but her arms wouldn’t budge. They were pinned to her sides, and she only managed to twitch her index fingers.
Calm down, she ordered herself. Calm down and think.
There was an escape button built in next to her shin. If she twisted her leg a little, bent her knee at an odd angle, then she might be able to reach it. She tried that, using all the strength she had. She was close, very close. Almost…almost. There!
With a hiss, the doors of her Cocoon slid open, and Wren clawed out of it, gasping for air as if she was a fish that had flopped onto shore.
Immediately, her head stopped spinning. Her skin no longer felt as though it was blistering. She turned away from the source of light and shielded her face with her hands.
After a full minute, her eyes finally stopped stinging, and she dared to crack them open a fraction of a millimeter. The room was bathed in light, and Wren knew instantly that she had woken up at the wrong time.
Because even the most expensive high output LEDs couldn’t reproduce this kind of brightness. This was the sun.

This drives me crazy. I hear it way too often, mostly from older women. They hear me mention something I ate or plan to eat and immediately have to chime in- "rice has no nutritional value."
During my pregnancy, there was a bit of time when I could only eat potatoes without getting sick. Multiple women I know told me there was no nutritional value to potatoes and that I will gain too much weight and have an overweight baby.
These things are not straight sugar- they have vital micronutrients while providing much needed carbs. This drives me nuts.

2025.01.22 22:04 Sonbyd What is an at home self care practice I can do after work that isn’t on the computer
I work 8 hours a day mostly in front of a computer. My work is graphic design, video editing, or content creation so requires intense focus from my eyes all day long.
When I’m done with work, I want to do my hobbies but a lot of my self care is more stuff that strains my eyes: reading, drawing, designing on the computer, video games, legos/puzzles, research. It all requires somewhat intense focus on my eyes and I need a break.
Any suggestions for non-digital self care activities? Or self care activities that don’t require intensive strain on my eyes? I know walks are one. Any other suggestions?

last semester it started out this way but would’ve been fine by now(?) the showers take like 10-20 minutes to heat up from being cold and once they start to heat up it barely crosses the lukewarm line and ends up still being a cold shower. Anyone know why or do i just gotta purdue grit™ it out. I figure because I’m on a higher floor the water takes longer but shouldn’t be t h a t much longer and also everyone down in the laundry room is doing all the clothes washing on the highest heat setting probably wasting some hot water if that’s how it works. Did some cross testing with times where people would commonly or wouldn’t be showering and no difference 🥲
i do realize after typing it out it is winter and cold af so heating is prob much harder but still it was like cold out and the water was hot to the point that it burned last semester and now it can’t even be “warm”
