when building a distance matrix for phylogenic trees you want to asses the distance between sequences. To do that you run the Jukes Cantor substitution matrix on your sequences, which assumes that each nucleotide change is a the result of a fixed mutation rate that occurs independelty at all sites, the difference between the sequences can the be converted into time giving you knowledge about their phylogeny?

2025.01.22 22:04 Dizzy-Designer-8166 Have a 9800X3D, should I upgrade to a 4070 Ti Super? Or something else?
I have a 6 year old PC, and I've bought all the new parts except for my gpu. I've been struggling to find any 4080/4080 supers for retail, I don't want to pay for a 4090, and I live in an area where used parts are super close to me unless it's a few hours away.
Just wondering if I should look at the 4070 Ti, or the new generation of cards coming out soon (which in my eyes, doesn't look super promising based off initial news).
Note: I went with the 9800x3d because I got it for retail at a reasonable price compared to the 7800x3d price. And I also don't want to change the cpu for many years. Thanks!

Lets say I have [[Impact Tremors]] in play, and I cast [[Tor Wauki, the Younger]]. Tor Wauki sates "If another source you control would deal noncombat damage to a permanent or player, it deals that much damage plus 1 to that permanent or player instead."
Does this ability apply to impact tremors if Tor Wauki is the one who is triggering the tremors to begin with?

I’m currently planning a Dark Sun game (with pathfinder rules). Im very very new to the Dark Sun setting, and I need some advice to not totally shatter the setting’s rules.
I plan for this to be very Conan the Barbarian style. Players roll into town, do quests, get loot, etc. I’m thinking there will be a “big bad”, but he’s in the background most of the time, and during the course of the game, he will gradually get stronger and stronger.
I’m not versed in the Prism Pentad, and certain points of the metaplot confuse me. Mainly about the fate of Rajaat after Borys was killed, and the “Free Years” after Kalak was overtaken by Tithian. Hence, I really don’t want a lot of metaplot elements making their way in. To justify this, I’d say the campaign will be set sometime just after the fall of Kalak in Free Year 1.
Tithian is king of Tyr, but Borys is still alive. I think he would be like a Godzilla figure, remaining docile so long as he receives sufficient sacrifices and worship. Hence, there are statues built to honor the great dragon, and festivals are regularly held in the streets of towns and cities. The Dragon Cult worships Borys, and claims that they must receive tithes from the peasantry lest the dragon will awake and destroy everything they know. In truth, this is total bullshit, and the cult uses the gold extracted from city residents and merchants to finance massive parties and orgies for their members and templars.
The background Big-Bad would be a sort of archfey whose existed since the time of Rajaat. During the conquest, it fled underground and slowly went insane as the world was defiled. Eventually, it went dormant, and its mad dreams slowly leaked into reality. Magma and earth elementals were subtly influenced by it, and began acting strangely, and halfling tribes around its resting place entered a sort of hive mind with it, building temples and worshipping it as a lost god. Now, the mad fey is waking once more. Athasians are having vivid nightmares that influence their thoughts and drive them to worship the fae creature. Cults are beginning to spring up in cities and villages, and desert fey creatures are terrorizing mortals.
What gets the players directly involved in defeating the fae is that they are slowly going insane over the course of the campaign. Every few levels / story arcs, the archfey’s influence will seep more and more into their minds. Eventually, they are illuminated to what the creature actually is, and go to slay it in its resting place, but only when they’re strong enough to face such a beast.
Do you think this is a good point to start off with? And are there any changes I should make to fit more with the setting?

“This is my first time keeping a recorder beside me while I research samples brought to me from the field. Normally, I record my findings through pen and paper, or through the computer. But Erica recommended that I try using the recorder, as it can be used to capture details that I might miss.”
“A brief introduction: I run the optical properties center in the advanced government research institute, which includes myself and two other researchers: Dr. Henry Chen and Dr. Erica Stewart. Our team handles the determination of optical properties of unknown samples.”
“At our disposal, we have a large dark room where no external light sources can penetrate. Within that room, we have spectrometers, spectrophotometers, lasers, specialized lamps, and other equipment.”
“Sample 4536 was given to us by one of the field agents, Olaf Henderson. It was safely stored inside a metal briefcase. A briefing from him indicates that it looks like a near-transparent crystal. He told us that initial assessment indicates it is not radioactive.”
“It seems to behave very strangely under varying light sources. He told us that the sample does not glow when directly exposed to a 365nm UV light source. However, after exposing it to the same light source after 12 hours of near-complete light isolation, it glows a bright pink. He also notes that under direct sunlight, the sample’s shimmer appears to change over time. Sometimes it is opalescent. Sometimes it has a faint golden hue. But it always maintains its transparency.”
“Considering some of the samples I have seen, I am not surprised. Anyways, I have it now, so let’s begin.”

When the green laser emits a beam at the sample at various angles, it seems to reflect it directly back into the laser. “Perhaps I should specify as to stress the strangeness of their findings. They observed no refracted, transmitted, or absorption behavior during the experimentation. 100% of the incident beam was reflected back into the laser.”
“They also mentioned that the sample appeared to have changed visually. It is now white and purely opaque. It is not exhibiting the purple glow under 365nm that I observed earlier.”
“I told them that considering the rather discrete wavelengths this sample emits, perhaps we should shine a laser at those wavelengths to see if it will respond. Erica suggested that if we submerge the sample in different media, we could alter the laser wavelength to possibly match its emission wavelength. “I am saddened to report that there was an incident in the dark room nearly 8 hours ago. The only one affected was Erica. Her well-being is unknown. On-site technicians told me she was holding a bloodied glass shard. It appears she stabbed her eyes out with the sample and kept screaming incoherently.”
“Erica was the only one in the dark room at the time. She was handling the adjustments of the red laser wavelength using various media. I found her recorder on the table next to the sample. All the machinery and lights were off. The equipment was scattered on the floor. Blood... blood everywhere.”

“Olaf and his colleague, Christy, came to see both me and Henry an hour after the incident. They informed us that Erica is currently being monitored at one of the finest government medical facilities. The doctors are doing everything they can to save her, but her condition is critical. We should know more about her status by tomorrow.”
“In the meantime, we have been advised to rest for about a month while the lab is put back in order. They need to find a replacement for Erica during her recovery. Additionally, it has been recommended that no one works with the sample alone. They will hire a few people to supervise us while we work.”
“Before ending this rather short audio log, I want to play a section of Erica’s recorder. I am not sure what to make of it.”

I can see at the bottom left that there are many circles. The biggest ones at the center, then expanding outward. At first, it looks like there is no pattern, but from a distance…”

“…it looks like several chains of circles spiraling from a large center circle. This is beautiful.”

“Hey. What’s that forming in the center? It kind of looks like a…”
