Hi friends, I am 23 days clean today! My main motivator for quitting is my health. My biggest fear is being told I have a terminal illness, and vaping not only makes that more likely but increases my anxiety around the entire topic of health and sickness.
Around the 2 week mark I spent half an hour researching known impacts to help motivate me to keep going. I know a lot of people struggle with motivation, and some have a 'the jury's still out' mentality surrounding the health impacts of vaping, but what I've found so far is pretty horrifying so I thought it might help someone to read. This was just what was relevant from the first 2 pages or so of Google Scholar so no doubt there's a ton more out there.
Impact of vaping on respiratory health; BMJ 2022
- Pro-inflammatory effects on all aspects of the respiratory system including airway resistance, impaired response to infection, impaired mucociliary clearance, decreased immunity, elevated inflammatory cytokines and tissue hypoxia
- Vapes have been found to induce oxidative stress in lung cells and to both induce DNA damage and impair DNA repair, consistent with a potential carcinogenic effect
- Mice chronically exposed to vapes developed side effects consistent with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Human studies have been more limited but reveal increased airway friability and edema as well as altered gene transcription and decreased innate immunity
- Deposition of ultrafine particles and heavy metals including (but not limited to) benzene, acrolein, volatile organic compounds, propylene oxide, manganese, zinc, formaldehyde and diacetyl
- Diacetyl is a flavourant that garnered particular attention after it was identified as being in most vape solutions tested, and is widely associated with an outbreak of bronchiolitis obliterans (“popcorn lung”) at a microwave popcorn plant in 2002. This highlights the possible risk of the development of popcorn lung among individuals with chronic vape aerosol exposure to diacetyl
- Health outcomes among vapers remains an open question. No large scale prospective cohort studies exist yet
- There are many metallic compounds and chemical flavouring additives within vapes that are associated with human toxicity. These chemical toxins have been linked to increased oxidative stress leading to systemic inflammation
- Vape carcinogens have been shown to have a toxic effect on bone cells, and long term use may decrease bone mineral density and increase the future risk for osteoporosis
- Nocturne in e-liquids negatively impacts intervertebral disc (IVD) health by creating hypoxic environments that degenerate the IVD vasculature and cellular matrix
- Cadmium, found in vapes, has been suggested to have negative effects on the lifespan of cells with just low level exposure
- Vapes contain an abundance of metallic elements including particles of tin, silver, iron, nickel, aluminium and silicate. 9 of the 11 metals detected in vapes were equal to or greater than the concentration detected in cigarette smoke. All of these metals are associated with human toxicity at high doses, particularly in the nervous, renal and respiratory systems.
- Continued exposure to the chemical toxins in vapes contributes to systemic inflammation that can result in downstream organ pathologies such as renal fibrosis
- Oxidative stress caused by chronic vape use can activate the transcription of inflammatory genes that recruit leukocytes and are involved in chromic inflammation
- Vaping has been shown to have numerous harmful effects on the physical and mental health of individuals
- 5 studies found that use of vapes worsened depressive symptoms, resulting in a deterioration of mental health, with female vapers at higher risk of mental health issues including depression
- The risk of developing depression or anxiety may be higher in vapers compared to non-vapers
- Nicotine use in adolescents has been shown to cause severe impairment to the growing brain, leading to cognitive and psychiatric issues like depression, anxiety, violence, other substance abuse
- Emerging evidence suggests that the nicotine solvents propylene glycol and glycerol have cardiopulmonary effects. High levels of propylene glycol systemically can lead to metabolic acidosis, acute kidney injury, and a sepsis-like syndrome.
- Another effect of nicotine and ENDS exposure is a decrease in brain glucose utilization. Prolonged exposure to nicotine leads to an increase in GLUT1 expression in the brain, with a consequent decrease in glycolysis. This glucose deprivation state may enhance ischemic brain injury or stroke risk.
- Nicotine may lead to brain mitochondrial dysfunction because α7-nAChR is highly permeable to Ca2+, a key player in both synaptic plasticity and ischemia-induced cell death
