vs. 2025 Honda Civic Si
After a few days of ownership these are my initial impressions of my 2025 Platinum White Pearl Civic Si as compared to my previous 2022 Snowflake White Pearl Mazda3 Turbo Sedan. It is an interesting comparison because while there are some notable differences, there are a lot of similarities too. I got a Mazda3 Turbo AWD Sedan in 2022, choosing it specifically as a sporty car with automatic so my wife could drive it. When it was totaled recently, I reflected that my wife almost never drove it, so decided to indulge my own desire for a manual transmission. I commute to work on mostly curvy backroads through farm country. It is a rather pleasurable experience and I was looking to maximize my enjoyment.
I considered other options including a WRX but couldn’t get past the horrendous looks of the newest generation. I test drove a slightly used GTI and hated the capacitive buttons, dash and screens. It felt like technology was vomited all over the dash and steering wheel. I also test drove a slightly used Mazda3 turbo AWD hatch, which of course was no different from my sedan from the inside including the boring automatic. (The Mazda3 does have shifter paddles, but they weren’t as much fun as I hoped.) After test driving an Si, I was certain it was the car for me.
Let’s start with the similarities between the Mazda3 Turbo Sedan and the Honda Civic Si. The sedans are nearly identical in exterior dimensions. Mere fractions of an inch different in everything except height. The Si is over an inch shorter height-wise, but that doesn’t show up in the interior dimensions or feel. The Honda actually wins by a little on interior dimensions for the rear seats and trunk, but neither of those are a big factor for me. Both have sunroof, heated seats, same warranty, and same active safety features. Other things that could go either way are navigation and satellite radio. My 3 had SiriusXM but I never used it after the trial period, so it was sort of annoying and a waste seeing it appear in the menus. The Si doesn’t offer satellite radio and I am fine with that. But the same goes for the Google Navigation stuff built into the Si (My 3 didn’t have Nav, but it is included on the Premium Plus). I use Apple Carplay, so unless I forget my phone, I’ll probably never use the Google stuff in the Si.
Sticking with the interior and infotainment. Even though both have Bose sound systems, I’d give the slight edge to the Si. It just sounds a little better to me. Both infotainment systems work well (no VW mess here). The 2022 Mazda3 has a 8.8 inch non-touch screen, whereas the Si has a 9” touchscreen. I didn’t mind the non-touch screen in the Mazda. The knob to make selections worked very well. Airplay in the Mazda was wired only, so you would think Honda wins with the wireless Airplay, but the pause/play and song selection controls are less responsive in wireless mode, so I’m not sure yet.
The 3 is a little more luxurious inside, less sporty. It has leatherette vs cloth (though I prefer the cloth and red accents of the Si), a heated steering wheel, dual zone climate control, power seats, adjustable lumbar, and a few small things like sliding visor extenders and a handle in the trunk so you can close it without touching the paint. I don’t really miss the power seats or dual-zone climate control as I am usually in my car alone. I do miss the heated steering wheel and weirdly enough the handle in the trunk. The seats in my Mazda 3 were fantastic, but the Civic Si seats are even better. I am 6’1” and 225lbs, and have back problems. I love the way I fit in the Si seats, very supportive and comfortable even without adjustable lumbar.
The exterior. Non car enthusiasts would have a tough time distinguishing them but the Si wins on looks for me. Though the Snowflake White Pearl on the Mazda is just a bit more attractive to me than the Platinum White Pearl of the Si, the rest of the elements of the Si make it nearly perfect. The standard rear deck lid spoiler in black looks great. A very small rear spoiler is available for the 3, mine didn’t have one. And while the newer carbon edition Mazda 3 sedans have a black grille surround, mine was chrome and so was the door trim surround. White paint and chrome just doesn’t go well together in my opinion. There is very little chrome on the Si. Only badges and those are easily addressed. I prefer the front fascia and rear of the Si too. Slightly aggressive without looking over the top. The Si also wins with wheels and tires. Both the 3 and Si have black 18” wheels, but I prefer the style of the Si wheels over the Mazda 3. Si wheels are also an inch wider (8” vs 7”) to accommodate 235/40 tires vs 215/45 on the Mazda.
Driving impressions. So now I finally address the biggest differences between the 2 sedans. It is a little early to give a full review as I am still in the break-in period with the Si, therefore not using wide open throttle yet and I am keeping the RPM below 4 grand. Nevertheless…
First, the Civic Si is manual transmission only and the Mazda 3 Turbo is automatic only. I’ve owned a couple manual transmission cars in my life, including a first generation Mazda 3 that I still use for SCCA RallyCross racing. Years ago, I also drove a 5-speed Geo Prizm. I actually loved that little car, except when the red paint faded to a dull pink. I never owned a six speed, and never a Honda manual transmission (owned a couple different automatic Accords). The shifter for the six speed in the Si is sublime. Is that overstating it? Uh, no it really isn’t. It is tight, notchy (in a good way), accurate and just so much fun to row through the gears. I will admit that I am still getting used to the rev hang from first to second, but it hasn’t bothered me too much. The automatic rev match/throttle blip on downshifts is fun.
I thought for sure, I would really miss the AWD from the Mazda3. But so far I really haven’t. Don’t get me wrong, I loved how the AWD 3 pulled through the corners even with its torsion beam rear suspension. Where ordinary cars would reach their limit in a corner quickly, the Mazda3 just begged for more throttle and I never felt nervous obliging with a foot to the floor. It has only been a few days of driving (with a good bit of snow and rain), but the Si feels similar to the 3 in that regard - just well planted in the corners and very confidence inspiring.
I am sure the 3 which has more horsepower and a lot more torque would win a drag race against the Si, but even with AWD, I’m not so sure it would win on an autocross course. I don’t think I’ll miss the power on my daily commute and so far the 400lb lighter Si along with its independent rear suspension and limited slip differential is at least an even match in the twistys, perhaps better.
Non-driving factors. Everyone knows that Hondas have legendary resale value and a superior reputation for reliability. I didn’t really have any significant problems with my Mazda 3 and at least after 2 years it was holding its value well. I got a surprisingly nice reimbursement from my insurance after it was totaled. Of course the Honda is too new to know how it will do in those regards, but I have good reason to feel confident that it will exceed that of the Mazda.
I’ll wrap up with one final non-driving note where the Si clearly wins - notability. The Honda Civic Si brand is iconic. When I see my RallyCross racing buddies, they will immediately know exactly what car I have when I say I bought a new Si. Even in the enthusiast crowd, I had to explain that my Mazda3 was not your typical sedan. “Mazda three turbo all wheel drive sedan” doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue and you sound like a dork spelling it out everytime you talk about your car. I think Mazda is missing a branding opportunity by not reviving the Mazdaspeed brand (or creating a new one). Honda with Si and Type R has clearly continued to use ithat effectively. Toyota with GR and even Hyundai with N branded products are doing it right from a marketing perspective.
My only regret is that I wasn’t able to find a Rallye Red one in time. I had been without a car for over a month and couldn't wait any longer. I am happy with the Platinum White Pearl as solid second choice.

Je fais ce post car la led blanche gauche (pas la droite) de mon GPU clignote lorsque je passe un peu de temps à jouer sur des jeux comme Destiny 2, Black Ops 6, Path of Exile 2 mais pas sur League of Legends. Ca ne me faisait pas ça avant, ça me fait ça tout d'un coup au bout de quelques mois. Sachant que la carte graphique est neuve (3 mois) et que mon alimentation a 3 ans.
J'ai déjà essayé de :
changer le câble PCI-E,
débrancher et rebrancher tout ce qu'il y a sur mon PSU,
réinstaller windows (on ne sait jamais),
débrancher et rebrancher ma carte graphique de la carte mère,
essayer 1 seul moniteur,
et probablement d'autres choses que j'ai oubliées...
