My husband (36M) and I (35F) cannot see eye to eye about his art collection. Once every few months we get into the same fight over and over and it is incredibly frustrating, I feel like I’m being reasonable but he seems deeply offended. He refuses to see any part of my side as valid. I am open to the possibility that I could be overreacting, but at this point I do not think that I am.
He is very into art and has collected pieces from many artists, most of which I also like. Some of the art, especially by one particular artist, is on the macabre/horror side and some have strong sexual undertones as well (provocative poses, nudity, etc). The artist is extremely talented and I appreciate them from that perspective, but they are unsettling as everyday pieces and they aren’t a style that would go with the general vibe I want in my home which is more on the peaceful, welcoming side but still with stylish and bold pieces. When I first moved in to his condo that he owned, he had a long gallery wall of them displayed very prominently across the living room/main wall. I brought up the possibility of moving or replacing them with art pieces that we both like and he got extremely upset and defensive, accusing me of being controlling and judging him. Since it was his place, I mostly dropped it, but did end up bringing it back up a few more times over several years, with none of it leading anywhere except to resentment on both sides. He refused to see my side to consider moving them and even bought more, which I took as a sign that he didn’t really care about me feeling comfortable in the home I was living in, and he took any criticism of the pieces as me being an uptight prude stifling his personal expression and passing judgement on him as a person.
We bought a home together, and for the most part he has kept them wrapped up and not put them up. I have said we can display them on the upstairs hallway or in our bedroom, but he basically says it’s “ruined” for him because of how I feel about them and has made no moves to put them up. I put some of them up in our large walk-in closet, and offered to dedicate an entire wall in there for it as well. I get that it comes across to him as me “hiding” it, but I don’t know where else they can go that won’t hijack the entire vibe of the room.
Another fight we had was over us keeping an art piece of an orgy (different artist- not horror) in our guest bedroom. It’s not super sexually explicit but there’s a lot of T&A and I just felt like it was too much for guests which is mainly our family. He at least understood me taking it down for my mom visiting but other than that, felt really resentful about it being moved to another location. When I’ve mentioned it might make people uncomfortable, he basically said they should “just get over it”.
This came to a head the other day because I had moved a canvas piece (totally different art and art style, like a sci-fi graffiti kind of thing) so that it wasn’t directly behind me when I am on zoom meetings. There isn’t anything “wrong” with the piece, it’s just very bold and for meeting with clients and coworkers in a highly professional setting I just prefer a neutral background. He got really offended by that, basically insinuating that I was ashamed of him or something but no, I don’t care about the art in any other context, just a professional one. I have tattoos that I’m not ashamed of, but I wear long sleeves at work. I don’t consider that being fake or hiding parts of myself. Again, he did not see my POV on this even a little bit. His work is more casual, but I asked him if he would have one of his more explicit pieces in the background on his video calls (knowing that of course he wouldn't) and he refused to answer or recognize any of my points.
This is where I want to know if I’m overreacting:
It feels like he is gaslighting me about my reaction to the pieces. Yes art is subjective and we can have unique responses to art, but also the artist can be intentional in what emotions they are trying to evoke. The style of the art is meant to be provocative, shocking, confrontational, and subversive. I appreciate art that is highly meaningful and expressive, but it’s still unsettling. When I explain the uncomfortable feelings evoked by some of the pieces he acts like I am crazy for getting that vibe off of them, but it seems like very obviously the intent of the piece? People can like horror movies, is it wrong for them to have feelings of dread or fear while watching them? He is extremely stubborn on this point and will not concede that my reactions to them are understandable AT ALL. I’ve seen them now many times, so maybe I am overreacting and hanging on too much to the initial reaction?
The second issue is that he takes my preferences for the artwork to be a direct judgement of him - that I am calling him weird or am rejecting him. I don’t think that is what I am doing and I feel like I am being totally reasonable. He has spent a lot of money and time accumulating these pieces and obviously really likes them. It is his home too, and we don’t have guests very often. Am I overreacting by not wanting them up, or can I just have a difference in personal preference that isn’t also judgmental or critical? Is it wrong of me to consider the potential feelings of guests/visitors over his feelings about something he really cares about?
TLDR: My (35F) husband(36M) has a collection of expensive, provocative, sexually suggestive and macabre artwork that he wants to display in our home, but I disagree and find some of the pieces disturbing and only want them in specific locations in the home and not in main areas, which he has taken very personally. Am I overreacting for caring so much?
