2025.01.24 08:47 Gytgh How I got my monstera to flower outside, using shadecloth. (based in WA, Australia)
Hi all, this is the kind of (ideally, long standing informational archive) post I would have liked when I started growing monstera outside under a shadecloth - the flowering was a happy accident - which I take as validation of my care methods. While you can grow these under trees, shadecloth provides a much more replicatable method. (your climate may overwhelm all efforts to get monstera to flower, and they may just never flower outside for you; i'm sorry)

Root Management Originally had this as the last section, but really this is 100% necessary for plant maturation. The areial roots must root into the ground, because this tells the plant it has plenty capacity to suck up nutrients to support flower growth. The stem gets thicker, and leaves bigger, when aerial roots are rooted (see image 4). I also have a small piece of wood to have the stem butt up against, which also helps to provide a vertical wall to direct aerial roots down. clearly from my photo I should have started with a longer stake.
I also used twine to stick the stem to the stake - just remeber to take it off later ahaha.
Species My plants are the borsigiana (albo) kind, but this will work with deliciosa.
Climate I live in Perth, WA, Australia. We have a mediterranean climate, meaning we have hot, dry summers, and mild, wet winters. I am not well versed in US climates AT ALL, but we don't ever freeze, and summer days are only considered "very hot" above 35*C (95F). Google seems to relate this most closely to LA, in California.
Shadecloth I got green, 40% shadecloth from Bunnings (as in blocks 40%, lets 60% through)., and sheltered the plants with a single layer of this. Honestly thought i'd need to cover with a second layer in summer, but ended up not needing this due to only very minor leaf browning, which is more consistant with watering habits/and large variegated leaf areas..
Soil/Pot Rough estimates of my soil are 70% pine bark (started with orchid coarse, but just went bulk and cheaper with pine bark mulch). 20% or orchid potting soil, and 10% perlite. Also a few handfuls of horticultural charcoal for good measure (probably less than 5% of the total volume). The pots are clear plastic, with a bit of flexibility, 190mm wide, by 200mm tall. This is FANTASTIC so the pots don't overheat (compared to black pots), and I really wanted to see the roots fill out the pot initially ahaha.
Fertiliser Because of the very airy soil, I have not been too concerned with over fertilising (if theres no soil, the excess fertiliser just runs-off before overwhelming the roots), but I used 3kg Garden Basics All Purpose NPK Fertiliser, which says the ratios of 8-4-10-14 (NPKS) on the title label, but only in WA - there is a regional change - the percentages are actually 11-2-10-16. I would give each plant maybe a tablespoon of fertiliser whenever the last fertilser had disappeared (1-2 weekly-ish in summer, 1-2 monthly-ish in winter). In winter you water less, so the fertiliser has less chances to disspolve, so the seasonal watering changes do a pretty good job at regulating how much fertiliser I would apply.
Watering Once again, the airy soil makes it pretty much impossible to overwater (plus its outside so evaporation is my best friend), as the roots have so many air pockets to breathe, and the water never has a chance to accumulate. I also don't have saucers under any pots, the water runs straight onto the ground. I also assume that if you're trying to get your monstera to flower, you know a thing or two about houseplant watering nuance. Just water when it looks like there isn't too much moisture in the soil, but don't wait until its "dry".
Conclusion I believe houseplants are a trial and error process, and find what works for you and what doesn't, is half the fun. I have had my fair share of plant deaths because they don't suit my climate/motivation style. so while this guide has some very good pointers, it's up to you to tweak them slightly for your situation, as what is perfect for me, will not be for you. It took me about 1.5 years of this care routine, and about 10 nodes of growth from the cuttings I grew these plants (2 plants flowered) from. Feel free to ask questions about the setup I grew these under.

for the last few weeks i’ve been experiencing severe bouts of abdominal pain on my upper right abdomen. i’ve had blood work, ct and ultrasound and the only thing that’s come back is my liver is enlarged and has fat deposits. the er is recommending me to go get a hida scan. my problem is when this pain comes it lasts 4+ hours at a 6-9 and i end up in the er bc i cannot manage the pain at home. i feel bad to keep going in but im at a loss. rn i’m on hour 5 of pain and debating on going in as it’s not stopping. any ideas??

2025.01.24 08:47 queenofthenorth_04 I’ll be solo traveling soon for the first time but I’m worried I might be judged based on my looks. ( F and I look too young for my age)
Does anyone here got offloaded or got a problem based on how young they look? I know this might sound ridiculous but I had a lot of instances where it was inconvenient for me because people thought I was a teenager (my height is 4’10 and I’m turning 28 this year). 2025.01.24 08:47 Wonderful-One-1111 Starting to feel more fatigued after exercise, and faster as well
I have a rather consistent workout routine. I have been climbing 2x a week (bouldering / top rope) and I try to either jog a little (~2.5km) or lift some weights (~1 hour) in the week as well. For active recovery I do hatha yoga.
Recently I've noticed that I'm getting tired more easily. I used to have more stamina but I've found that I'm getting more tired when running and when I'm doing strength training, it knocks me right out.
Earlier today I went for a bouldering session and was so surprised at how tired I am right now. My entire body feels heavy and I noticed that during the climb I was sweating a lot (sort of unusual) and my heart was racing (also rather unusual). I chalked it up to adrenaline but I've just noticed a downwards trend in my overall fitness even though I am working out.
I'm drinking a lot of water and I use electrolytes when I feel I need to. I try to get sufficient sleep and I am not overweight. Any help/advice will be appreciated
