2025.01.24 20:00 OkParking330 Hoping to retire soon, but not sure how to deal with too much in pretax.
I am 60 and have 2250k in my 401ks. I feel like I should be able to retire on this. Given relatively low pay and heavy financial responsibilities as a single mother throughout the 90's and aughts, I didn't really forsee being in a higher tax bracket like ever so I always went for the tax deduction that the 401k provides. I did open a roth about 20 years ago but only contributed to it a few times and it only has about 40k in it.
About 4 years ago I finally got a promotion and making pretty good money - about 165k. Also a second job at about 20k/year.
I need at least 115k per year for a while as I still have about 110k in student loans with a 1600/month payment, to be paid off in about 5 years on the regular 10 year schedule. Plus a mortgage of about 2900/month for 25+ years. So that is 4.5k/month before I wake up and breath in the morning.
So 115k/year to live, and travel and splurges would be on top of that. Once student loans are paid off, that will open up a lot of breathing room. With just a few light splurges and some clothes here and there, etc. would be 125/year. Then add on ACA. Thinking it would be about 5.4-5.7% withdrawal rate initially. In 10 years I will get about 3500/month in social security.
It is hard to put more than 1600 a month to the student loans, so just planning to ride that out to payoff in 5 years. At this point I'd love to just pull it out of pretax and pay it off, but the tax bite on top of my 185k income would be a lot. I also need a new garage and would prefer not to get a loan. But again - taxes! Garage is a real issue - I need to take care of this before it gets to potentially falling and maybe liability if it damages neighbors garage when it comes down. I have no savings outside of retirement accounts.
If I do pull from pretax, I would love to start beefing up the roth pot and do conversions. I would need to do that in the 24% tax bracket though so seems like I am doing myself a disservice over just geting maybe 7% interest on a loan for garage or keep paying on student loans (about 6.5% average). But I fill up 22% just on the day to day expenses right now. And at least 5 years into the future.
On the other hand, if I don't start pulling major money out of the pretax, and the market continues pretty good or even modestly positive, I may be looking at 32 or even 35% tax bracket when RMDs kick in.
Summary: ~2.3m in retirement accounts, 125k spend, in 10 years at 70, 3500/month in social security.
Questions!
1) Is 2.3m enough to retire right now? Like Right NOW? So burnt up from working 2 jobs for most of past 25 years.
2) Is there anything I can do at this late stage to try to mitigate lifetime taxes? I sure didn't foresee attaining this sum, but maybe my 60 year old eyes are seeing it through "in my day, a candy bar cost a nickel!" and it isn't as much money as it seems to me?
3) now that I am over 59.5, I know I can take from retirements willy nilly. That scares me! But also - should I bite the tax bullet and just pay off the student loans out of pretax? Do it right now, or what till I retire? What about taking 30-35k out for a garage? 7-8k or so of that would be taxes.
I want to handle this the smartest way - preserve as much of the money as possible. I just don't know which way is best.

is the adaptive AI even worth it? I find that it makes races fun and close since the AI is adapting to yourself but in practice it’s a whole new beast. It feels like when I do a really good lap, the game thinks I should be able to make up another second. Not saying I need to be on pole every race but sometimes it feels draining and frustrating. Should I turn it off or is it better than normal?

I postepf a parcel using evri then realised they had not ppaid. No problem as the parcel had not been delivered yet. So i called customer service and ask them to return the parcel to me. No problem they said. Then i received an email saying the parcel was due out for delivery the next day. So i contacted them again and emphasize not to deliver the apostle but to return it to me. Just checked my tracking and guess what? My parcel has been delivered to a scammer well done evri. I shall never use evri again

 | I’ve had my tuxedo for 3 years and rescued him when he was very very tiny. We have formed a strong bond and so has he with my bf. He’s obviously very comfortable around us. Anytime anyone has come to visit, he would be hesitant but wanted to say hi. And usually they’d go to pet him and he’d let them for a second but turn around and give a little over stimulated/know your place bite. Well my mom is visiting for the first time from across the world and when we got home it’s like he immediately recognized that she was my mom? He went right up to her and started rubbing on her leg and jumped into her lap to be pet. And slept on her last night 😂 I am shocked out how comfortable he was instantly. This is the only person besides us he does this with. Either he loves her? Or just knows she’s my mom and maybe we smell similar?
