I'm from Kerala and in a long-distance relationship. My partner recently visited, and we spent a day together (10 am - 6 pm) exploring the mountains and a forest waterfall. Hello everyone I am a Jordanian diaspora living in America. There is something that has been bothering me as as I try to learn more about my own culture and heritage.
The creation of Jordan as a country stole away the natural Levantine culture of our people in a sense. Jordan is very unique in that the north west of the country is very Levantine in nature, and the south is more Bedouin and those backgrounds and even genetics can be so different. My family is from the North and the way I was raised and grew up was very much in a Levantine household.
I’ve seen before how others have commented on the Bedouization of the country, and to an extent I agree. I understand that it isn’t just as simple as that as the more famous areas of Jordan such as Petra and Wadi Rum is in the south and run by the local Bedouins. I also know that there is more of an allegiance to the monarchy from the Bedouins I believe which contributes to how we are viewed as a country.
I believe the creation of Israel deprived us of our local Levantine culture. We are forced to adapt to the Bedouin culture stereotype to be different from Palestine, as if we dive into our culture that feeds the narrative that the land is Palestine 2.0 and gives a free pass to allow deportation essentially. When we do allow ourselves to participate in our Levantine culture it is always assumed that the country is only Levantine influenced due to Palestinians that have lived there since 1948.
Our culture is being erased. If there was no Israel then the preservation of the Palestinian culture would not be so pronounced, and there wouldn’t be so much information online on it. There is barely any information on Jordanian, Syrian, or Lebanese culture that is readily available compared to Palestinian.
For instance, I had to go on a hunting spree to find traditional Jordanian thobes when there is a whole section of them on Wikipedia for Palestinian thobes. Don’t get me wrong, it’s amazing that they are preserving their cultural identity but at the same time it is costing us our identity as well. What difference do we really have when a river separates us? I see that online there is so much superiority of Levantines against Jordan and claiming we don’t have traditional dress or we are all just Bedouins.
Our own history is not concentrated enough, even the capital of our country is named after our ancient kingdom of Ammon.
I feel like we are slowly losing our cultural identity due to western influence and creating borders that do not make any sense.
This is more of a rant but I’m so proud to be from this country and it saddens me how little I am able to learn being so far away.

Me(21m) a fresher, is going to join a startup(10+ billion valuation) as an infrastructure engineer (is what they call sre in that company). On paper I know what is the role of an sre, like monitoring, ensuring reliability etc. but I want to know what does a day look like for an sre. I have done one internship prior(devops intern), where I worked with deploying applications in kubernetes ( the company was shifting from monolithic to a microservice architecture), it was a laid back role, not much pressure of anything, I was just an intern. Now I'm a little nervous about this, I'm new to this and it would be great if you could share your experiences and advice for me to do well in my job and learn.
