An unconventional way of posting, but this is a letter to my younger self that will never be read by him.
If I could speak to a 14 year old version of me, I would tell him I’m sorry. He told himself that even though he was afraid, that one day he’d be older, and not afraid anymore. He wouldn’t have to question his own safety in his own home, he wouldn’t worry about where he was to sleep, about what food he could have, or about the warmth he could feel. My 14 year old self slept under park benches because at that point in his life, he told himself he wasn’t loved, and for the most part, that was true, he only had his grandmother, and he never wanted to burden her. He had dreams of playing for his country, which he did for a while until he gave it up, because ultimately success would terrify him, because what happens when he does succeed? More importantly, what happens when he does succeed, and loses it? so he gave up. I’m sorry you were so afraid Jody, I know we told ourselves we were strong, but at 22 years old I am more lost and afraid than ever, I’m sorry I didn’t do better for your future, if I looked at you now I’d see a young man with a brave face, but with a sense of brokenness, I wish I could fix that for you, I wish I fixed it for us, but I never lived up to what I said I would be, and for that I am sorry. You had talents in sports that others dreamed of, and you’ll forever be the 14 year old star, but I haven’t kicked a football in 4 years, I feel my leg would crumble under the memory of what I used to be able to do, I’m still so young yet my life is a diaster, I wish you could have found a good woman to love you unconditionally, I know you wouldn’t have been stopped if you had that, no matter what type of relationship, you would have succeeded, I’m tired of hearing you need to do this on your own, I can’t do that, I needed someone, everyone needs someone, and I’m so sorry that nobody could love you, because you were just a scared kid with a heart full of love, I wish I could save you from the life you followed, because all I have left for you is a broken shell of a man in 8 years, and you deserved more than that.

I have a friend (30M) and I (27F) have been friends for 11 years. He has been my closest friend for years but over the last few years it’s become abundantly obvious he has feelings for but he’s never said. He’s always been someone I can count.
Some background, I’m a divorced single mom and had to move back into my parents house for a couple years. I lost most of my friends in the divorce but let’s call him J never stopped being there for. On occasion we would watch tv in my room and J would fall asleep in my bed. I mentioned to him several times he needed to sleep on the couch but he never really respected that boundary.
I had a boyfriend for a couple years after the divorce but I ultimately ended that relationship. J still never admitted he had feelings. Well at a recent party at J’s house I was hanging out with a mutual friend that works with J and when he found out I was single he asked me out on a date. He too is divorced with kids and we have always gotten along really well, I guess I had just never considered it. In the last two weeks, J’s friend, let’s call him Chris and I have gone out on 1 date and hung out a few times. J was pushing Chris to ask me out apparently so he did. We kept that we are seeing each other private because it still very new and quite frankly nobodies business and we have several friends in common. Well while I was switching my apple car play J clicked on Chris’ message which I think was manipulative and cornered me about what was going on. He reacted terribly and said he needed a break from me.
Concerned I invited J over the next day for dinner to smooth things over, he got drunk and asked to sleep in my bed. I told him that he could sleep on the couch if he needed to spend the night. He asked me several more times and said no, he tried making me feel like I was crazy for setting this boundary but I just don’t sleep in the same bed as my male friends, or really any friends for that matter. J went to walk up the stairs to my bed room any way and I told him no. J then yelled at me “you will let anyone in your bed except for me”. I took this as him calling me a whore and he slammed the door while leaving and it woke my child up. He was texting me over and over again all night saying things like “I wish I were dead”. I figured this was just the drinking and he would be fine the next day.
He told me the next day that I will let any man in my bed except for him. I’ve spent my whole adult life in a marriage practically but ok. When I told him that sleeping in my bed is a boundary, he told me he had done it before and I told him that I had told him no all those times because it makes me uncomfortable and that he ignored it and I’m putting my fun down. This just feels like a really crazy over reaction to me going on one date. He is claiming I lied and manipulated him by not telling him when Chris asked me out. Am I overreacting or has this relationship just run its course.
